Ever since I started the game (I'm 11 hours in now) I have only heard party banter literally twice? This is not normal right? My game is updated and all (I'm playing on ps4)... anyone has the same problem?

Unfortunately it's known problem. There were attempts of fixing that, but as with tries it got better for some, it got worse for others  :(

Oh no! Now I remember reading something about a silent companions bug when dai was released but I had hoped it had been solved by now...

and if they havent fixed it yet, they probably never will right?

:(  what a bummer...

Yeah, they stopped patching DAI some time ago.

Well they tried to fix it several times.  The fixes worked for some people, but not for others.  For me, it seems to come and go - right now I'm getting banter constantly, but there have been times where I've gone hours with none.  (And I was one of the few who had absolutely NO problems until they "fixed" it.  My game played perfectly at install, and has only gotten less stable with various patches.)

Fast-traveling to camps or other way points also seems to reset the timer for banter.  So you can try not fast-traveling to see if that helps.  Also try changing up your party line-up.  Sometimes I've swapped just one party member and this triggered banter again.

I've NEVER had decent banter, maybe one or two per zone, never in Western Approach at all except one environmental remark IF I take Iron Bull. To get any in Hinterlands I need Iron Bull and Vivienne, then I get tow there, one about sword cleaning and, one about scab picking. Varric and Blackwall have one about Sebastian in the Storm Coast.

Solas and Bull play chess in EP and HW, but that's about the most I ever get beyond environmental comments, mostly if even bother with Sera, then I get her Veil remarks as annoyingly idiotic as they are.

For some reason, the Frostback Basin, the zone in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC, seems to have banter work properly, but none of the others. So if you have that DLC or are planning on getting it, you can look forward to that!

Bioware should have taken a closer look at why it went right there so they could apply it to the other zones. Oh well.

Yes, I get very little banter too. I spent hours wandering around the Hissing Wastes because some people got a lot of banter there. Not a thing for me. I'd rather hear the banter 20 times over than not hear it at all.

If you're a PC-player, you can "fix" it by using the Cheat Engine. With it, you can get banter on demand. Here's a post I made about it earlier:

Oh well good! Let me just put this here then for other people as well.

A Cheat Engine Tutorial I found very usefull.

The Cheat Engine I use is 6.4 btw, not 6.5. Don't know if it really matters but if it ain't broke....

And here's the Cheat Table

Okay, I can officially faint while playing DAI now. 3 banters, not just environmental remarks in the last hour but the kicker is, this in IN WESTERN APPROACH! Eep, it isn't broke - yipee. LOL

Party: Fem Elf Inferno/Rift Mage

Cassandra

Balckwall

Cole

All default talents but, speced in them to my liking. Not clearing quests, codex anything, just playing and, I finally got WA banter going. No mode or cheats, vanilla game with all DLC which I've had for ages but this is the first time since release I've actually gotten banter in WA. And banter I have never heard before on the last one, Blackwall and Cassandra discussing sparing.

If you are not on PC or don't want to use CE, there is a workaround that sometimes works for some people.

Go to your Journal, Completed Quests, open every topic and clear (click on) every item that still has a diamond on it. The theory is that those quest completion announcements are "stuck" and no banter or music can play until they are cleared.

This video demonstrates.

That's an interesting theory.

Would explain why I never had the feeling of a banter bug, cause I regularly check my journal for those diamonds.

(they just bug me, just like the automatic quest selection when you talk to someone and get a new quest )

As crazy as it sounds, it does help on console. There was one time I went three or four days (four hour gaming sessions each day) without any banter. I would set the controller down and refuse to move until I heard banter. Nothing. Friend tipped me off about clearing my codex of new entries. Did the tedious job of going over all the codices (why they removed the "mark all as read" option, I'll forever be annoyed) and sure enough, banter started to trigger again.

When I do get banter it tends to be when I am closing a rift or finishing up a big fight.  End up missing half of the banter.

I can confirm that this worked for me on PS4, along with reducing my rate of fast travel.

Google fixes for this, there are several options. PC has more options, but there are fixes for consoles as well.

If none of them work for you, I'm afraid you will have to start over. Every time you start over it rolls a dice, sometimes the banter works fully and sometimes its buggy.
