Well, this fucked up my head worse than 5 hour energy.

I have romanced Liara from the very second I met her in ME, and have never been unfaithful. We had sexy times before Ilos, and in LoTSB, and now in ME3, she gives me some time capsule, and the only options I have are to be friends.

Aren't we already a confirmed item? I already told her I wanted to continue the relationship.

Do I have to restart the game? What did I do wrong?

^Sorry I couldn't resist :)

There are at least two relationship checkpoints one at start and one after Citadel coup I think (the latter locks in)

I told her in the beginning I want to continue the relationship, yet nothing has changed, and it hasn't locked in.

I guess it's a bug? Gonna wait and see, but I'll probably restart the game.

Damn, so I missed a conversation at the Citadel before the Cerberus attack.Don't have any saves before that. ): Doesn't make sense though, I thought we already had a thing going on. Oh well, time to be a total ******* to everyone but Liara. I hate restarting.

Thanks guys.

You confirm the relationship after the coup. Near the smoke rising and the Salarian store owner.

You must wait for an invitation from her first to meet on the citadel. Restarting wont fix it because you haven't reached that part yet.

This.
"Comfirming" anything before the post-coup meeting at Meridian Place Market/Citadel does not count as locking-in.

Below are most if not all of the dialogue options for earning romance points with Liara (new and imported romance).
To enable lock-in at the post-coup meeting >= 4 points are required. (Needless to say, Shepard must not lock in anybody else nor choose "Let's just be friends." during their 1st convo in her Normandy cabin.)

+ 1 point

  • Mars / Reunion

[default]   You did the right thing. ("I was under house arrest. There wasn't much I could do to help you, anyway.")
[romance import]   I missed you too. ("I would've liked that, but under the circumstances... I think I can forgive you.")

  • Mars / Cafeteria

[default]   I have a lot to live for. ("When there's so much at stake, I just think about what I'd lose if I fail.")

[romance import]   I remember the ones I love. ("When there's so much at stake, I think about my friends, loved ones... what I'd lose if I failed.")

  • Normandy / Liara's Cabin / 1st Meeting: "I'm sorry. I understand if you don't want to talk about it."

I appreciate you asking. ("The thought means a lot, Liara. Thanks.")

  • Normandy / Liara's Cabin / Meeting After Tuchanka: "Sometimes I wonder how you do it."

[default]   I think of what's at risk. ("We have a galaxy to fight for. The stakes don't get higher than that.")

[friendship]   I have friends like you. ("I think of the people I care about. That helps keep me going.")

[romance import]   It's all for you, of course. ("Every time the world's about to end, I think about how mad you'd get if I didn't stop it.")

  • Normandy / Acquire Mission Ardat-Yakshi Monastery After Coup / VS Was Shot

Are you all right? ("Are you okay, Liara?")

  • Normandy / Shep's Cabin / About The Time Capsule

I'd like her to decide. ("You know me well enough to fill in the blanks, Liara.")

So are you. ("You've been there for me, too, Liara.")

  • Normandy / Liara's Cabin / After Thessia: "How many asari died because I demanded their help?"

[not taken interrupt]   You did what you could. ("You couldn't have saved them, Liara, even if we got there before Cerberus.")

  • Presidium Commons / Apollo's Cafe Before Coup / Acquire Barla Von's Mission

You should relax more. ("We'll get the people. Take a moment for yourself now and then.")

  • Presidium Commons / Meridian Place Market After Coup / Lock-in Convo Before Thessia

Kids are kind of cute. ("Yeah, that's actually pretty cute.")

  • Presidium Commons / Meridian Place Market After Coup / Lock-in Convo After Thessia

I would've liked that. ("I bet it was something special.")

+ 2 points

  • Normandy / Liara's Cabin / After Thessia: "How many asari died because I demanded their help?"

Paragon Interrupt ("None.")

+ 4 points

  • Normandy / Liara's Cabin / 1st Meeting: "Should we continue where we left off?"

[romance import]   Absolutely. ("I'd like that more than anything, Liara.")

Thanks guys, most of the sites I looked at for help mentioned locking it in before the coup.

Or maybe I just read wrong. Thanks for clarifiying. Now I feel stupid.

I'm honestly shocked that it's even possible to get friendzoned by Liara, at any stage of the relationship .

No probs.

I just hope you didn't start a new game for no reason. Don't feel stupid a few years back this thread would have started a debate over the romance.

From what I've experienced with a Liara romance, that scene with the capsule is mainly a friendly conversation. No, you have not messed up. Lock-in is at another point in the game.

You did have reasonable concerns, OP.

Shepard who romanced Liara since ME can reaffirm their intentions from the very beginning of ME3.
However, Liara's choice of words and behaviour before the lock-in can raise some doubts about her commitment.

Liara's romance was disappointing in ME3. You tell her early on the game that you want to stay together and then she friend zones you for most of the game. The fact that there was even a conversation with Liara and nearly every other LI about whether you wanted to re-enter into a relationship with them rubbed me up the wrong way tbh, did they and Shepard decide to break things off when he was under house arrest? No? Then why did that dumb conversation even need to happen?

I agree. Lazy game-making. In Shadow Broker, Shep is mentioning 'marriage, old age, and lots of little, blue children'. In the beginning on ME3, Liara says something like 'it's been over 6 months, should we continue where we left off' like they had only been casually dating. It doesn't make sense.

It isn't lazy game-making. I had the chance to converse with Liara's ME 3 writer and she said that it was basically a missed opportunity, and that if she were able to go back and revisit it, she'd have added an "if romanced" variation.

Well, when the writer admits it was a missed opportunity, I'd call that lazy game-making. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Shep/Liara romance in ME but some of it was just horrible, especially in ME 3.

I think all ME1 romances came with being friendzoned until the presidium lock-in.

It is pretty jarring how she friendzones romanced Shepard before the coup and it's also why half the time I leave her for Traynor.

'You don't have any excuse to be mad at me, Liara. You were distant and unavailable and have you listened to Traynor's voice? I mean come on.'

Never got the attraction to traynor's voice, I hear people like that all the time.

Anyway Liara's ME3 romance is pretty abysmal for an me1/2 import. It wouldn't have even taken much effort to improve it.

No one finds their own culture's accent attractive. :D

The only true payoff is the silhouette of Liara and Shepard embracing eternity, other than that yeah the romance is pretty bleh.

IIRC she also said she would have added an arm around her shoulder from Shep or something.

As for lazy or not I'll stay out of it.

Ashley and Kaidan were in hospital and had some trust issues for half of the game so it made sense, Liara on the other hand has no such excuse, the writers really dropped the ball with her romance in ME3, it was utter garbage.
