Would a hard reboot of the franchise be such a bad thing?

I think this can be explained by the lack of AAA RPGs. People take what they can get... and there isn't much.

There does seem to be a player base that only wants like AAA experiences or something.

Personally have no issues dinkering around with an obscure 3DS game I think we're repeating ourselves here though.

My question was simply was if ME1 was so bad how are people managing to accidentally play the next 2 games in the series as well as hover around the forums posting continuously about them.

I mean like I think Wendy's is overrated perhaps but the solution is I just tend to pick other options.

It's ultimately a rather rudimentary exercise of cognitive functioning.

I have a feeling In Exile is exagerrating about ME. He probably likes it.

This site is just a bit irreverent. At least I am. I just made fun of ME2... even though it's my favorite ME game.

Sometimes I wonder where the line is between irreverence and opaque hatred.

I can't speak for him, so I'll try to not comment more.

You can always tell when I hate something though. Like DAI. If I wasn't invested in DA generally, I'd hate it more.

Honestly, despite all its flaws, I really cannot find a compelling reason to go back and try to gloss over the original trilogy with a do-over, not when the effort could just go towards going elsewhere in the universe, or just creating an entirely new one.

That was me just musing in the abstract, I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular.

No prob. Just my 2c as well.

My point about AAA RPGs stands though. That would explain a lot. Bioware is one of the few who do them anymore. So people grin and bear it. They may like the idea or the medium or what have you, but get tired of how it's executed. But there are few places to go.

I'm still wonder why the AAA thing matters to be honest, but I guess that's me from the perspective of someone who was plenty happy with a tiny monochrome game boy screen and indeed spent gazllions of hours on it.

Fancy pants budget and big splash splash is fine and all, but hardly required.

I like my simple low-bit games, but I'll be damned if the most I'd get is an 8-bit space opera. I likes me some fancy pants cinematics and stuff.

There's the whole immersion factor of being up close and personal with characters, I guess.. maybe cinematics. Not sure.

To be honest it all depends on the aesthetic, like I think Super Metroid like the final sequence was more pretty and interesting just because of the style and colors even though it's 16 bit.

Spoiler

Whereas you can have a giant 3D game and it's like meh.

For me, Adventure games were a bigger love in the past. By the 2000s, they died out a bit. But I got some of that story quality out of RPGs. So I jumped in that.

Now that Adventure is getting popular again, maybe I'll be happier.

Did I not say they all take place in the same region?  The Sword Coast!

You didn't actually give a reason why being on the Sword Coast matters, though. Waterdeep and Athkatla both being on the Sword Coast is about as relevant as Andromeda and the Milky Way both being in the Local Group; it's a meaningless geographical fact.

I don't think it's about geography with ME. I've said this before, but I think part of the charm of ME was it rooted in familiar human events. It had a church, it had a space race based on ours... Among other things. I could even tap into my own life when coming up with stories for an Earthborn Shep. Whatever this new character is, or new characters born in Andromeda, they'll never be as cool as Earthborn Shep. I know both drugs and gang life.. and I know people who've gotten out of it and made better for themselves. This is all very real to me. And it was kind of fun to transfer it to sci-fi.

Really, really wonder, again, just how it is you people manage to pick things you think you want to play but ultimately can't stand.

I mean I get it, it happens to me sometimes, but still, what other game was so appealing that brought you to Bioware and then I suppose ME betrayed you or something?

No, that'd be Iakus.

I don't think In Exile meant to make a substantive case against ME there. As I read it, he was objecting to the characterization of ME1 as being significantly less infested with mystical mumbo-jumbo than the later games. It had a little less, sure, but it was still bad enough that if you really cared about this stuff, you shouldn't have stuck with the series.

Put another way, the most satisfied ME fans are the ones who never deluded themselves into thinking ME was any better than Star Wars as far as the science part goes.

I don't know anyone who demands science from Star Wars.

It wins people over for the Luke looking at the horizon scene. That seals the deal right there. It has nothing to do with science... and barely even sci-fi.

So why aren't you consuming a media that is better than ME though? Maybe you could share with us these things that are better so we could play them at least, or, I don't know, something, you must get what I am saying.

And that goes for lakus as well, and, just, whoever.

Also as far as DA:I kat I understand I don't say things without reason any negative ones understanding the emotions it may cause but I honestly just couldn't help but like laughing at some of the DA:I trailers that's how ridiculous they were to me.

it was about as Dragon Age as Sonic is CSI.

I lost the thread there. If geography isn't the point, then it's not got anything to do with Earthborn Shepard being Earthborn. You don't think drugs and gang life could exist in Andromeda?

I mean, sure, it's possible that they won't exist yet, depending on where we pick up in the history. But it's also possible that our new PC could be from Earth. We don't have enough data to know this yet.

Nothing like Earth, no. And all that one can project towards it. And why would there be urban life for humans in the first place? Or urban areas that are anything like Earth? It's another GALAXY.

Man, I even knew a damn Finch. That was how close it hit home. :D

Heh, Earthborn Shep was sort of interesting. I always shot that guy from Shep's past. Wants to air her dirty laundry? Well, guess I'll have to air his brains all over Chora's Den.

I guess I wasn't clear. ME's crappy science and mystical blather is a problem, but it isn't a serious problem. Say, -3 points on a 1-to-100 scale for ME1, up to -5 for ME3. I still end up liking ME just fine.

(And disliking Star Wars for the crappy science is completely missing the point, obviously.)

No one asked, but I like ME enough that I didn't even think it needed another game. It was good as it was... Good enough at least.

I don't trust the motivations for making this one... or find it as inspired. It's obviously a cashgrab. Either that, or a way to appease appeal who felt gypped the last time. It could still be OK, but I'm a little wary.

Well, you'll need to build up the population for a while to get to having cities, yep. But after that, why wouldn't there be urban life?

If it's going to go through this much trouble, then I could have just used a different setting. It's a lot of jumping through hoops just to get me back where I was.
