A renegade play through as a silent protag would have as much punch as sugar free donuts. I like hearing my character speak, especially if we have a good voice or accent which goes well with being a sarcastic jerk. And mute hero would be a huge step back for the series in terms of narration and immersiveness. So no, hell no.

DAO had silent protagonist with murder knife though. Maybe it would make renegade even more intimidating- character that electrocutes you, pushes you through window and punches you into face without a word when you try to interview them could be pretty menacing :P

That's only joke though, I don't want silent protagonist at all.

Yeah a truly silent figure would be pretty intimidating indeed. But then again they'd literally have the personality of a brick wall, impressive in a way but also very one dimensional. Also you'd be losing out on moments like this;

Probably a bait thread but whatever.

Star Wars: The Old Republic had voice overs for all of their characters, but when Knights of the Fallen Empire came out they started making the protagonist silent. In the opinion of many others and myself this was a terrible mistake.

What BioWare should do is offer multiple options for our characters, like those Saints Row games.

ME has never had a silent protagonist so I wouldn't expect a change like that all of a sudden.

Or how about a protagonist that has a weird completely out of place vocal quirk? Like how a ton of characters in one piece have a overly exaggerated laugh or a mid sentence quirk like so..

"Well yes, but carl we need those..." -coughs- "Ma ma ma~~~~"(those squiggles mean it's being sung) "flux capacitors otherwise pur space magic won't work."

It was a major disappointment when they pulled that mute PC crap in KOTFE.  Not to mention the fact that BW claimed this was to give us more options and most of the dialogue was still three choices..oh yeah and sometimes they gave us the option to stare angrily.

But seriously, if I wanted to play a silent protagonist in a world where everyone has a voice except for my character, I would play a Bethesda game (in fact, there are many more games like that I can play right now).

I became interested in Bioware games (at least ME) because they did something different and actually let our character have a voice, and emotions that came with that voice in an RPG. Which made me actually feel like I was apart of the world itself, actually interacting with other characters; rather than a mute, soulless puppet, with zero emotion that had a blank expression on their bored face, that I have zero connection with.

If they ever got rid of the voiced protagonist and the dialogue wheel (especially in ME, and future DA games), then I don't know if I'll ever buy that game; I'll just play a Bethesda game, instead.

The protagonist not being voiced only works if the entire game delivers dialogue in text form. It was jarring in DA:O to listen to fully voiced NPCs interact with the protagonist, only for the protagonist's reply to be delivered in text form.

Agreed.

I would rather have "terrible" voice acting on an expressive PC yelling at annoying NPCs, and during crucial moments in a game; than a soulless, mute puppet that only has one facial expression  and reaction towards everything--->   (a.k.a. the "tranquil" emotion)

Fallout 4 has voiced protagonist + dialogue wheel so it seems like nowadays Bethesda has voiced protagonist as well. I wonder if it will carry on next Elder Scrolls game.

That would be interesting, since each race in the TES franchise has different voices.

Stop with the horrible voice acting for main characters in RPGs.  I want to be able to role play in my role playing games.  I know Mass Effect never had a silent protagonist but its time to take the series in a bold new direction.  No matter what you did or what choices you made Sheperd was always the same old Sheperd due to the voice acting be it good or bad.  Have faith in us game developers.  Some of us can still use our imaginations from time to time.

No.

If you can use your imagination from time to time, why can't you imagine different characters with the voiced protagonist? There are many people who sound similar if not identical to each other, so it wouldn't be a suspension of disbelief.

Nah, I'm fine with the voiced protagonists so far in ME and DA.

I agree on that. I had plenty of Shepards who were a lot of different from each other, despite the same VA. It was more problematic the appearances of my male Sheps, since I don't think the CC was good enough and I was aways tempted to go with Sheploo (it was a bit easier for femShep). Though based on DAI's CC (on next gen), it'd be easier in Andromeda, since there are overall more options, despite the problems in the hairs and beard department (which I hope if not completely fixed it'd be at least less bad then in DAI).

Yes, the cost of doing it will probably be high and risk crippling the dialogue. But if they can pull it of without sacrificing dialogue I'm all for it.

Same as this basically. It was fine in DA origins but I can't imagine it ever working in any mass effect game, it would be too weird. Except I wouldn't want it any more DA games to come either, they've kinda evolved too much out of that.

Having KOTFE suddenly go for the silent protagonist route for certain conversations, even though it was three options like normal, seemed unnecessary and a bit of a step backwards even if it was meant as a callback to the old KOTOR style.

I get that leaving the NPCs in your alliance unvoiced means they don't have to spend a ton of money on recording time and cut down having bringing all the actors back into the booth for every single conversation anymore. Plus the dev team now can put more focus on the writing and spare cash to spend on level design and visual elements.

Still, it does seem jarring as a player to go from fully voiced to silent depending who you're talking to?

Oh man that would be so awkward. Whenever someone chimes in it's just a blurb of text that pops up on the screen and you have to read it quickly in order to react to it.

Still not hardcore enough. I demand Bioware tell it's stories in cave paintings.
