I am trying to do this quest and I have found several notes, but they don't show up anywhere and I have no quest entry.  It's as if they don't exist.  Is there a glitch?  When I go back to the chests and book stacks where they are supposed to be there is nothing.

There should be an entry in your codex, titled Watchguard of the Reaching in the Quest Related seciton. This is an unmarked quest, and you have to read the full codex entry that is pieced together as you acquire more notes (4 or 5 notes in total, if I'm not mistaken).

Fortunately, the full text will be in order, and you just have to read it and follow as it is described in the notes. There will be some passive map markers (meaning they don't point to mission objectives, but they have the same titles for the rooms as it is mentioned in the notes). You'll have to activate some statues in the order described in your codex, in a room marked on your map. It is easier than it sounds, the notes are pretty easy to follow.

(I miss these kind of quests, the mage tower in DAO has some more of these like the summoning circle, little unmarked but fun quests with great rewards. This just shows that DAO was one of the last true cRPGs become DA became a flashy action game...)

Thanks.  I finally found a book to examine and that gave me the entry.  I think the first three were in chests or bookshelves and appeared as a item marked notes.  The rest were "books" that I had to examine.  In any event I got all the entries, I still don't know how, and completed the quest.

There should have been six notes (some notes are inside books)...
oh and make sure you save before the demon appears - sometimes the demon doesn't drop his sword as loot, and you'll need to fight him again.
