This is a very disturbing thread. It's obviously a female, cause she's made of stone like all female hearts are! Coincidence? I think not.

Well if Shale is sentient as I believe is said to be the case then I can see it developing a gender identity.

I think it's worth noting that it seems some folks are misinterpreting the issue Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation are two entirely different things. Shale's personality is also a matter of how it develops over time and interaction with civilization, not just how it was originally formed. There's also the issue of how Shale sees itself and how we perceive it being two totally separate things. How often do we call a car or favored object a him or a her? D&D covered the issue to a small extent in their Eberron setting with the Warforged, but as mentioned earlier it's something brought up in Psychology often as well.

Possible spoilers ahead!

This would mean that a every (I believe?) golem once had a gender, seeing as they once were regular dwarves. The text in the link says it was mainly dwarven men, but it does not state that there were no dwarven women... So I guess it is possible that Shale was once a woman and, possibly, is able to "rediscover" that part of him/her/itself.

Shale is an it. Its impossible to have a gender for any construct.

It's possible for a construct to be biologically male or female, you'd just have to create them to reproduce sexually. Even if they weren't created that way, it's still possible for them to have gender.

A construct is not even biological to begin with. It is an..."it". It is probably the personality (if it has any) that would portray or emulate this concept of genders to them. :D

940, 45th day, 5th year of the reign of King Valtor: I have done it. The vision the ancestors gave me has come to fruition. Today a man sat up from my forge, a man of living stone and steel. I called him golem, for the legend of those great statues animated by the dead. They are our future and our salvation.

940, 60th day, 5th year of the reign of King Valtor: It is a horrific process. Not every man could do such a thing and survive with his mind intact. I am honored that the ancestors believe I have the strength to bear this burden and forge Orzammar's defenders.

Nothing so great may be achieved without sacrifice. Nor may stone and steel walk without a spirit to animate them.

940, 73rd day, 5th year of the reign of King Valtor: I have asked for volunteers. Some few answered, men of the Warrior Caste, younger sons with no property, no chance for marriage. They want to defend Orzammar from the horrors these humans have unleashed. They want to live forever in a body stronger than the finest armor. They do not ask to speak with those who have gone before.

I have put off saying this, even in these pages. But I must say it now. My golems will be powered by their deaths. These brave warriors come to me, naked as they were born. I dress them in a skin of armor, so large it makes the burliest look no more than a babe, the anvil their first and final cradle.

We are surrounded by a mile of earth on all sides. No one hears the screams as I pour molten lyrium through the eyeholes, the mouth, every joint and ****** in the armor. They silence quickly, but the smell lingers, just a trace of blood in the greater stench of hot metal. I must work fast. The armor is malleable now, as I shape it with hammer and tongs.

It is not long before it moves beneath my hands, writhing and twisting with every blow. It speaks again now, a low moan, but I have learned to tune it out. I can afford no error in this craft. There can be no melted slag blinding the eyes, nor an unhewn bit of granite shackling the leg. They groan at my work, but would they rather be broken, crippled? Those I have spoken to tell me of the pain, but could they see themselves, they would see perfection.

--From the journal of Caridin.

So, yep, who knows? Personally, I suspect Shale is Caridin.

I suspect Shale doesn't have a clue of his sexuality. DAO will be a journey for him in many ways. lol

Heh... I just finished playing through Jade Empire, which also has (Chinese) golems, and they too are powered by sacrificing a human to an agonizing death in some kind of liquid (though I think it's acid rather than hot metal in Jade Empire, at least, it's green and it steams and bubbles).

I think the same Bioware golem specialist wrote the lore in both cases ;)

These are both rather different from the original Jewish folkloric idea of the golem, in which it was a man formed from clay and given life, Adam being the first or prototype golem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golem

In one of Terry Pratchett's later Discworld books he addresses sexless, sentient beings assigning themselves a gender. It's funny to read while a golem learns to be a woman by reading good house keeping and then being handed radical feminist material. As all golems do, she takes written word very seriously.

Well on the french description, Shale is male.

Like others said technically Shale doesn't have a gender.

But I'll basically associate him with being male just as I would associate Asari with being female.

*shrugs*

It'll be interesting to see what the voice over is like in Russian.

No no no...

If you are deriving the gender of Shale from "Son passé"...then you are wrong. The possessive pronoun agrees with the gender of the noun, not the person.

I think people need to know the difference between gender and sex. Sex is determined by the anatomy of an individual, the presence of XX or XY chromosomes and other factors. Gender is a perceived aspect of someone. Anima and the Animus. Tomboys, camp guys, "Girly girls", butch girls, macho guys....my friends, it is quite a broad spectrum!

Ultimately....Shale does not have a willy or a front-bottom...but some choose to perceive him as male, and others female. Hopefully this answers the question of the topic.

:D

Do it's quest and you shall see. It has a soul, and had a body. That defines it's gender. One can't change what it is, regardless of what you do with the outside bits.

In the quest to discover the past of Shale, the golem's previous life was a female dwarf. Maybe that's where people think Shale is female.

SPOILERS:

Shale was a female dwarf before being turned into a golem.

So technically Shale isn't anything as a golem, but if Shale was anything it would be "she.'

And, it may not sound like it, but the voice actor for Shale/Shayle is female! - Geraldine Blecker

Shale is voiced by a male, so I'm going with male-ish, at least :) According to the wiki, anyway, it's voiced by Barry Ellis. Now some folks have said Shale sounds female, but not on my machine. Definitely a male voice. Perhaps there is more than one voice over?

nope..as was said..doing her quest you find out she was originally a female dwarf..the ONLY female dwarf to volunteer to become a golem.

now as a golem..of course "it" has no gender..but Shayle..was..in fact..a woman

I found this on the Dragon Age Wiki:

If Shale is a party member when the Warden arrives at the Anvil of the Void it is revealed that Shale was once a female dwarf known as Shayle and she belonged to the House of Cadash. She was one of the first volunteers to become a golem. After becoming a golem, she stayed with Caridin until she was sent away out of mercy.

Shale (Shayle Cadash)is a girl, there is some rather interesting conversation with her later on.

as golems go, she's the smurfette of the group(being the only female)

I find it interesting that Connor also refers to the main character as "it" when possessed by the desire demon in Redcliff Castle - inferring that shale could be a possessed golem, though I doubt it, was just an amusing observation.
