Greetings Fellow Inquisitors-

Up until last night, the best gaming fight I had ever had was doing PvP during Star Wars Galaxies. The imps raids my guilds home town and me and this one guy went at, both of us almost dying multiple times, for almost 20 minutes. In PvP, 5 minutes is a long a battle! But last night beat even that.

I completed the Red Templar quest on the Storm Coast when I notice a little boat, so ok, cool- lets see where that boat might take me and my inner circle of warriors. My main is a KE mage, plus I had Blackwell, Cass and Varic. Im level 17, they are all level 16. We had 10 of 12 healing pots left, Cass had 4 Regen (tier one, no upgrades), Varic had one Regen pot, Blackwell had 3 and I had 3 healing mist grenades which have like a 30% failure rate, Ive noticed.

Low and behold, we end up facing a level 19 High Dragon and it was on like Donkey Kong. The lovely beast dropped Varic instantly. He never got into the fight. Not sure why. He has almost a 50% crit rate, so maybe that is why she targeted him so early. I probably should have held him back until Cass had good aggro.

So it was my KE who was hitting for 2 to 2.5K, once over 3K by combining the cloak ring with KE cloaking. The three of us all stayed rather healthy and got her down to about 50% health. We bleed heavily one of her legs. Then all of sudden, things started going south. My KE has an amulet, EPIC, Kitty something or other, that I didnt get the value of until that fight. The dragon started jumping around a lot so I could keep my barrier up for myself. I must have died 4-5 times and that amulet would pop me back to life with 50% health. Unfortunately, this resulted in me burning through lots of pots. By the time I ran out of amulet timing (you have to stay alive a certain amount of time or it wont rez ya), this is where I stood:

Spoiler

I had never, in any of the DA's played a tank or warrior character, so no time like the present to learn! LOL Blackwell did well, but he never got anywhere near the numbers my KE was getting. The best would be like 600-700 damage, most being in the 100s and 200s. But he and Cass lasted some time whittling the majestic beast down. To frame this, the battle up until my mage died - had gone on for about 25 minutes, that slow but, as you could see, a fair amount of damage. But once the mage went bye bye, progress was painful and slow. I had to pause countless times because my hand was in SO MUCH PAIN. At one point, the dragon jumped to an area and Blackwell briefly got stuck on a tree stump. Thats all it took, he started taking on some heavy damage and eventually, he too, went bye bye- resulting in this:

Spoiler

What you're not seeing is my foe was down to 20% health and Cass had 4 regen pots. So I thought, I can do this. Cass fought a very long time, countless armor resets, and whittled him down to 10% health. But in the end, she ran out of regen and so, the dragon with just 10% health dropped Cass. The total fight time was just under 80 fracking minutes, EIGHTY!!!

I think we've all had moments when a game transcends being a game and in that moment, I didn't get angry. My respect for the dragon only rose AND I felt like in my little world of make believe, I had truly fought a dragon. Games rarely rise to the level of execution. Its a battle I will never forget.

That dragon always got the best of me, I can't ever remember killing her once before I moved on. Luckily it's so pretty- she lives to see another day.

No way to manually revive a character during this combat? Did only a short attempt at relatively low level and just fled so I don't remember much. If the areas is too small it's probably a no go, if not it depends of dragon AI.

I can understand that for this specific context, dragon, it feels justified, but it's a grinding, And in general DAI combats tend be a grinding they are far to be as good than those of DAO and DA2, and I include dragons, but that's just my point of view, plus an experience could feel different.

I HAVE killed the Vinsomer.  Once.

However, I don't even go to her anymore.  She and the one in Hissing Wastes are left alive.  No large settlements for several days travel, so why bother?

I like your story but tbh i had never any problems of killing that Dragon the only Dragon that gave me the most problems was the level 23 Dragon in Emprise Du Lion.

edit. Oh and i forgot something to say yesterday Greetings to you to fellow Inquisitor   ;)

I should have been more clear, but yeah, didn't post this because of the death but rather, to share a rather cool experience. My main toon was two levels below her and my team was three levels below her, we were not prepared for her in terms of maxed out pots around healing (which, if we had, we would have won). But I'm glad I wasn't prepared. Im glad, as endless as it was, it happened the way it did, because I now have this epic memory  that links to the game.

I know a lot of people talk about how grindy the game is but I don't find that to be the case at all. Its a big ass game and its an RPG, not a FPS. So for those of us who love exploring every square inch of a map, reading a ton of the notes, connecting with the lore, getting swept away with the experience- this is possibly one of the best RPGs Ive ever played. I really love it and the experiences I'm having.

If you want to blast through it, if thats your play style, then there are ways to easily do that. But for me, my heavy RPG play style, what's the point of buying such a sweeping and comprehensive game experience, if not to fully experience it? To each his or her own, but RPGs for me, really good ones, are not about winning or losing, but rather, the experience along the way. And this experience has been awesome, so far.

I love taking on Vinsomer and the Abyssal High Dragon, good fights, especially the Abyssal with an inferno mage - it's resistant/immune to most of my attacks. Good fun trying to out maneuver that thing and slowly chip away at its HP.

Yes, I can gather the right team, with the right armor, weapons and pots and cake walk any dragon in the game, nightmare, trials on but, what's the fun in a no challenge fight? RP wise, a high dragon SHOULD be a hard fight, I avoid cake walking them just for that reason.

Eighty minutes - Nice!  I had this same outcome my first time I stumbled onto the Sandy Howler - Cass was the only one left, and she fought like a champ. That fight, although we lost as well in the end, is the reason why Cass is almost always in my party.

First, yes, totally agree! The thing I loved about the Abyssal was its approach, the build up. And it was a good fight, one of my favorite screenshots.

The line I love that you wrote is, " ... is the reason why Cass is almost always in my party".  Totally get that. When Hawke reappeared, I definitely had those kind of reactions.

yeah I enjoy the dragon fights as well. The electrical ones are definitely the toughest to kill but they're all good fun.

To each their own, Milady. ;-) I enjoy the dragon fights, Ive dropped three so far but I always feel guilty afterwards. LOL I shouldn't, I mean they're terrorizing the villages! But DAI did a great job in how they look, rather epic. Nice quotes

Ahah, me too.
I've been replaying the game recently and half of my brain is going: "Do we really need to kill those beautiful creatures?" and the other half goes: "Think about the loot! The XPs! The influence!".

Cool

My primary character is a sword and board warrior and I mostly get through those dragon fights with her through sheer perseverance. It's so easy to build up guard its nigh impossible for her to die.

Nice report, OP. I, too, recall an epic battle with a dragon in DAI. That was the Kaltenzahn (L19, Emprise du Lion). I ended up with my KE going against the dragon alone, because I didn't have the time to revive my companions - I needed to continue to hit to keep my barrier up. I won this fight, but it was a very close thing. When I killed the dragon, I had so little health left that I couldn't see a sliver of green in the health meter, and I almost got killed by a dragonling *after* I had killed the dragon because I was so relieved and didn't pay attention for a moment. That would've been embarrassing, LOL.

I usually don't like fighting in video games much, but this was a memorable experience, even more so because it was optional. Had that fight been required for the main plot, I would've hated it.

As for feeling guilty, I know that, too. DAI's dragons are such magnificent beasts. I'm always looking for an excuse to keep them alive. After Trespasser, it's not as I couldn't maximize levels without them, I tend to craft all my party's equipment, and with the Golden Nug I already have every single schematic there is. I usually leave the Sandy Howler and Vinsomer alive, sometimes the ones in the Emerald Graves and Exalted plains as well.

Edit:

Wow, my 25000th post! And all with almost never posting in the now-defunct OT section.

May I mention that "has posted a lot" does not necessarily imply "loyal"   In fact, I consider loyalty a doubtful character trait when dealing with video games and their developers as a fan. I care more for being honest and open, both in my praise and my criticism.

I know but still 25000 posts is not nothing and if people like you weren't here making those posts then there would not be a forum at all for praise and criticism.

The two dragons that are the most challenging for me is the one in the Hissing Wastes and the one in Emprise du Lion. Both are fire dragons. I fought both on nightmare solo as a mage.

The other fight that was very challenging is in the trespasser dlc. I fought 2 despair demons and a rage demon. Every time I would do any damage, they put up barriers. If not playing as a mage, it would get frustrating. I did it yesterday as a mage. Took a long time, but worth it since the item in the chest had good stats.

Another fight is the giant qunari mage just before talking to Solas.

Yeah that's a pretty tough one takes a lot out of me as well. Especially as we have to fight him twice.

Nice story OP!

I have had a similar experience with Winsomer and another with Kaltenzahn who really only had a sliver of health when she got in the killing blow on my last standing tank =). Good times.
