Starting a new game i just got the 80ish dps axe for a tank. I tried hard to understand what possible use there was to a higher grade 1h sword. It does more dmg but it is so slow the dps is always bad.
Any thoughts?

Ability damage is based on a weapon's base damage, not DPS (say, ability X does 300% weapon damage). So if you want your abilities to be as good as possible, you'll want a weapon with a high base damage regardless of its DPS, which will usually be swords for one-handers.
Axes and maces swing faster but do less damage per hit, resulting in roughly even damage output. So if you don't use abilities much, they might be a better choice, but if you do use abilities frequently, a sword is the way to go.
This applies to all classes.
BansheeOwnage gave you pretty much the perfect answer.
Just to add a tiny bit of extra info though, I personally used a waraxe on my tank because of the faster attack speed, because it helped generate guard quicker through normal attacks when the axe was using a masterwork material which gave +3/5 guard on hit. It was my first playthrough on a high difficulty so I did everything with my gear to ensure I was getting enough guard ![]()
If you want more damage and use lots of abilities, a sword is best for that.

Good point about gaining Guard, that's another advantage for axes/maces. Just a general tip for gaining Guard: A "hit" is basically any time you make damage numbers pop up on-screen. So abilities that strike multiple times are great for gaining Guard quickly, even if each hit doesn't do much damage.
For example: Spinning Blades for rogues will get you a lot of hits, Energy Barrage for mages will build Guard extremely fast, and something like Lunge and Slash for warriors will get you 2 hits worth of Guard. Remember though, you'll need a Masterwork that gains Guard per hit for any of that to apply, which might take a while to find ![]()

An equal quality sword and axe both do the same damage per hit while the axe retains a higher dps because its attack speed is better. The advantage swords get is that they have a better reach over maces and axes which makes it easier for them to hit certain types of targets.
Edit: Apparently only crafted items have the same damage values, dropped items apply higher damage values to swords.

I... didn't know any of this. Thank youuu! I had thought that I was gimping my SnS guy by preferring swords, but I guess not! It doesn't really matter a great deal in my case since I play on causal and can sacrifice for the sake of appearance, but it is nice to know either way.
