It looks like I missed a helm that you get before the final battle. I already finished that battle and cannot find a way back into the legacy area.
I'd rather not have to fight the final boss again for a hat!

Are you on PC? If so you can use a third party tool called VADDI to get the helm. It's on the Dragon Age 2 nexus. If you're on console I'm afraid you have to fight the boss again.
