After having played Dragon Age Origins for 9 times (I just love these games so much)

I’ve finally arrived at the point where I am sincerely struggling to find my canon warden

I’ve at least played through every origin once, some which I’ve finished the game with and others who didn’t make it past Ostagar

However, having started my 10th playthrough a few days ago, I’ve come to the conclusion I actually don’t know who or what my canon warden should be.

First of; I enjoy playing as a female character (being one in real life), only 2 of my 9 wardens have been male (who’s playthroughs I did enjoy a lot mind you)

I’m not overly fond of the dwarven origins, since I’m not fond of caves, or darkness…so Orzammar and the Deep Roads aren’t really high on my list of favorite locations (before anyone asks, no, I don’t hate the dwarves, some of my favorite characters are dwarves)

I really love elves, and most of my nine playthroughs have been played as this race, but I'm confused on which of the three origins I should pick

So my question is this, can anyone recommend an origin for me?

If by any chance my question isn’t clear, feel free to ask me more questions

Thank you all in advance :)

I utilise the dragon age keep so I can keep multiple Wardens and what they did logged accurately, across my four world states. I also like to have one 'canon' world state though which I consider to be my real version of what happened - so I get how the choice of which one to pick can be hard!

Personally I went for the first full playthrough which I did as my canon but it has never stopped me from being tempted to change it. I think the temptation never goes away so its helpful to always keep your others as secondary worlds incase you change your mind one day.

I would suggest you picked a female elf as your canon, because you enjoyed that the most. There are 3 very good origins for the elves but personally I wouldn't say the mage origin for an elf is as special as the other two origins because its not elf-exclusive... humans can have the same origin. So it would leave Dalish and City Elf. I would pick city elf, because its the more unique so far in the dragon age world (in terms of the protagonist). Dalish elves are of course rarer than normal elves, but if you pick an elf for Inquisition, you can only be Dalish! So the option to be City Elf only exists in Origins.

Its a tough choice, but my one vote is for City Elf :P

Depends on what kind of story you want for your character during the game. Since dwarves are out, I won't be mentioning them.

If you want a revenge story, the I'd recommend Human Noble. In this scenario, you are someone of high birth, living a relatively peaceful and good life, until an old friend betrays and kills your family, takes your lands a title and you barely escape with your life and end up among the Wardens, who are again betrayed and left for dead. The two stories connect, as the man who betrayed your family is in league with the man who betrayed the Wardens, and they are leading the country together into a civil war, and you get your chance to fulfill your revenge against these men during your quests as the last Warden.

If you want rise to power story, choose the elves. In both origins, the elven main characters are basically nobodies, without name, wealth, lands or anything (or in case of the dalish, not even part of the culture of Ferelden). So basically, the elves come from a (largely) isolated community, wheter it is the alienage or their clan, the wide open world witnessing human civilization could come as a smaller shock, which they must overcome during their journeys. Joining the Wardens gives the elf characters a purpose, a meaning to their lives, as they could be part of an organization where one's origins does not matter, and they can be free of racial segregation.

For what it's worth, this is my canon -

I'm female so went with a human noble who marries Alistair to be the Queen of Ferelden.  If I was the Warden I'd choose Alistair too, and I like how she had an important role going forward.

I chose all the choices I'd make irl, the only difference being she has faith in the Maker.  So she's sensible, moral and ethically good, just like me, and has no time for bad guys.  So Sten dies in Lothering and Loghain dies too.

That canon world state is like me, but a little more sensible with LIs that I really like personally.

My canon Shep is who I'd like to be, a more badass woman who is a good renegade and can make tough decisions for the good of the galaxy.

But really I have 4 worlds for DA, and they're all important to me.  If I make more they'll be secondary, it's those core 4 that represent most of the choices, LIs, and personalities in the game and I'm hesitant to pick just one.

There's the warden I just described, the badass (and very cool) no nonsense Dalish elf who'll give anyone a second chance, the 'hit first ask later' dwarf who's suspicious of magic, and finally a selfish mage who screws everything up for the love of Morrigan and seeks redemption in the end.

City Elf

I'm the rare breed that likes the male version, but objectively speaking, I'd probably say the female is better.

And for some reason, I can't kill the female CE...or any Dwarven Commoner. I feel like they've earn some survival. But since I like the canon to be a sacrifice, I go with others, personally.

From your own post, looks like female warden it is!  Now your choice is:  city elf, Dalish elf, or circle mage?  As a city elf, it's kind of neat that you actually get to go back home twice to help your people.  For the Dalish elf, there's no going home again, although in DA2, it might be neat to hear Merrill talk about her childhood friend, the Warden.  (I really hate the facial tattoos, though.  And that gets even worse in DAI.)  I've never done the Elven Circle Mage origin, but it's the only one that allows you to play as a mage.

Thank you all so far for your help so far ^^

To add a bit more on my canon world state, my Hawke will always be a mage who (ironically) romances Fenris

(I can always attribute the weird story to Varric's story telling skills)

As for my Inquisitor...I'm dubbing between human or elf female (not sure yet on class)

I personally like the Dalish markings, but can't really put tattoos on any of my other characters (aside from my one time playing a Dwarf commoner) because I feel they don't really 'fit' the characters, as it were.

Both the Dalish and Dwarf commoners have a reason for a facial marking (Dalish due to religion, and the Dwarf commoners for...well, people to know who to spit on)

but I can't really think of a reason for any of the other origins to get a facial tattoo aside from a 'rebellious state in their youth' point of view

Yeah, I feel the same about tats. It always struck me odd that they even put tats on that Trailer Warden. If he's a Cousland, he must've been slumming.

I've always felt the trailer warden was from one of the cut origins either Chasind/Avvar or Human commoner, that first one (according to the lore) does have facial markings and/or warpaint

I considered that too. I guess they scrapped it, and came back with the commoner idea with Hawke.

I like the Dalish tats though. Because I can tell a story with them, unlike the others. Like Tamlen has Dirthammen tats.. the god of mysteries and secrets. Which is what Tamlen does. He's curious, sneaks through Merathari's books, and wants to stick his nose in places he shouldn't. In legend, it says Dirthammen had a brother, Falon'Din. Dirthammen went missing and Falon'Din drove himself to tears searching for his brother. Which I could sort of mimic with a Warden.

OTOH, Merrill has Falon'Din tats too. And she drives herself crazy as well.

OTOH, I like Ghilan'nain, the halla. I like her to be dual weilding as well, much like the halla horns. Or June.. I like roleplaying a crafter and a more neutral type of warrior. June is very open ended.. he's the only elven god where there's virtually nothing to know.

for my first Inquisitor I picked June's markings as well (also didn't know they were his markings at the time, they were the only ones I liked)

and played her as a person who wanted to 'create' a new world, not just for her own people but indeed for everyone else as well

I have another warden for RP purposes (she's a Dalish elfin mage) who also has Dirthammen's markings (or at least what I assume are his markings, it sometimes a bit hard to tell which ones correspond to the ones seen in Inquisition due to the different art style)

My first Dalish warden had Mythal's markings, due to him wanting to protect his clan from everything and everyone, he was the reluctant hero who eventually ran of with Morrigan

That's great. I didn't even consider that. Representing Growth.

I love the Dalish, but CE hits all the rights spots, personally. I like the lower class feel, the urban attitude, the rogue-ishness (even if my CE is a warrior).

The more I hear about the city elf, the more I feel inclined to play one myself ^^

Now to decide on either rogue or warrior, though I like rogues a bit more due to the extra content they get with Crime Wave and such,

also bows...I like bows (I blame that on Legolas, he's also the one that made me start loving elves in general)

I do feel it's to bad Velanna (from Awakening) doesn't really address an elfin mage warden (apparently due to a bug in her dialogue) as an elf

I also love the Dalish elves, but I feel a bit sad for them since the last game (finding out your entire religion and past is pretty much a lie is hard to swallow)

but it does make me wonder...we've only so far heard the sides of Solas and Flemeth(Mythal), but...who's to say they are telling the truth about all the Elfin gods?

Oh you can do Crime Wave as a warrior. You just need Stealing.

That's kind of what I meant by rogue-ish warriors. They're multi-talented :P

On a sidenote, if you notice in Awakening, the "fake" Dark Wolf is also a warrior.

Merrill mentions your Warden a lot in DA2 if the latter is Dalish.

I know, I once did crime wave with a mage...didn't really felt it fit her character though what with being a goody-two-shoes

I've started playing as a City Elf now (named her Minerva), she just arrived in Ostagar :) (we'll see how that goes ^^)

I've decided to make her a rogue with dual-weapon expertise, as well as poisons and traps

for specializations I think I'll go with Duelist (in Origins) and Shadow (in Awakening), I know you can pick up to 4 specializations but I tend to prefer to stick with 2

She's a bit of a morally ambiguous character so far, does the right thing, but if you should tick her off...you might find your breeches missing, or your gold, depending on how she feels at that moment. I tend to play 'good' characters, who balance toward either lawful or chaotic. I think my current Warden is a bit more of the chaotic variety :P

Do you need to pick one as more "real" than the others?  If you're deciding which on to use as the background going to into Inquisition then I'd pick the one that leaves Leliana alive, Anora as queen, and has a Warden who said "yes" to the dark ritual.

The ritual sucks. Or rather, it's not different than the Warden dying.. The Warden may as well not exist. Or let Loghain die. It doesn't make a difference and seems to just exist for happy endings. But the story itself doesn't need it.

I'll reserve judgement on what it does to a kid. That's a whole other topic.

The reason to pick a state where the ritual happened is so you can hear the hints that the spooky version of the kid gives.

I'm eventually going to make a male warden who's a father to a normal Kieran (aka. no ritual)

I tried a world state where there was no child at all, but it didn't feel right with me

especially because Morrigan referred to my Warden as 'hardly friends' as it were, whilst the two of them were vast friends during the times of Origins

So I've decided I'll either make a world state where there's an OGB Kieran (I love his cryptic lines, he should talk with Cole :P ), or one where Kieran is normal

I still have several achievements to do (such as sacrificing my Warden or Alistair) as well as the somewhat more 'darker' choices, such as annulling the Circle, killing the Elves etc.

also @ Illegitimus, I personally prefer to put either Alistair alone or him with Anora, for my canon world state I'm dubbing on which of the two I'll do

on one side, a joined marriage between Alistair and Anora is better for Ferelden, on the other side I can't justify having my warden's best friend (or in some cases lover) marry a woman he doesn't exactly like, and who also tried to have him killed (let's not forget the fact he absolutely despises her father)

On my 9th playthrough I made Alistair and Anora rule together, recruited Loghain and had him sacrifice himself to the Archdemon. Bu it left a rather bitter taste in my mouth, since my warden at the time was also romancing Alistair, so she basically betrayed him twice (once by insisting he marries Anora, and the other by recruiting his arch nemesis into an order he views as his family)

Also cryptic Kieran is adorable, to bad I tend to play as a female warden, normal Kieran is even cuter

I also always leave Leliana alive, since she's my go to Divine in DA.I either her or Cassandra (Vivienne...eh, not really fond of her personally)

1. Surana, supported mages, saved Connor, killed the demon in the Fade. Alistair rules alone. Killed Sophia Dryden, and kept Avernus Alive for his (not bloody) work. Saved Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep too, Left architect alive. Romanced Zevran and Morrigan, choosed Morrigan for little old god, and followed her through the Eluvian.

2. Surana: supported mages [...] Romanced Alistair, but she left Alistair for Ferelden. Alistair rules with Anora, Elana sacrified herself.

3. Cousland (warrior), supported mages, saved Connor, sent Jowan in Fade to kill the demon and for penitence. Romanced Zevran, but choosed the throne (kept Zevran as lover). Performed the Dark Ritual. He rules with Anora, choosed Loghain for Anora. (Alistair left.) Killed Sophia Dryden, and kept Avernus alive for his (not bloosy) work. Saved Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep too, killed Architect.

Plus I have a new male Mahariel, who maybe my favorite. He is rogue, ranger, supported mages (sorry, I always at mage side), saved Connor, sent Jowan in Fade to kill the demon and for penitence, choosed Harrowmont, killed Sophia Dryden, and kept Avernus alive for his (not bloody) work. Romanced Zevran. I dont finished the game whit him yet.

(But I have more Wardens )

Oh fair enough.

I just think there's a lot of... I don't know.. all of the Flemeth or Ritual stuff could have been more. It's pretty half assed. It's like they scrapped an idea and did something less. The same with Flemeth's interest in Hawke. This is what happens when people whine and the devs shift gears midway through the story.
