Before you said to farm chest in Waleska Watch; i tried doing that, getting only one item when there is more than one, like you do when tou farm FT obsidian in Redcliffe, in but in three runs i had no more chests because often a chest with two items respawns with just one and getting it turns off the chest respawning

That is correct. When I see only one item, I just reload from save without taking anything out of the chest.

Nobody said it would be easy!  ;)

There is thread explaining that http://forum.bioware...-and-mechanics/

In short the damage you do when you hit is: (Weapon damage - Armor) * (1+Attack%) so every point of Att adds 1% to the damage

This is then multiplied times crit_chance% * crit_bonus so is poinless to have a huge value of crit_bonus without good values of attack and crit_chance

The formula is more complex than that, the thread explains it well, but this is a good rule of thumb; for a mage ignore the armor part because your damage is elemental and for this reason there is no point to put armor penetration, that is a % of the opponet armor that is ignored (with 50 AP you ignore 40 of the the 80 armor of your opponent)

That is an outdated theorycraft thread.

The damage formula that has become the standard is here:

http://forum.bioware...mbat-mechanics/

Your abbreviation of the formula is correct, however. You can include crit/crit similarly:

effective_damage = (base_damage - armor) * (1 + attack) * (1 + (crit_chance * crit_damage))

IMPLICATION: buffing Attack% improves everything! Conversely, debuffing Attack% (like with the Sigil of Deepstalker) hurts everything. That includes the flank attack buff from that Sigil.

Didnt kno that it was the most recently modified theorycraft thread and i assumed it was the right one; is there no way to make such threads sticky and also make sticky a therad with links to guides and builds ? It could help a lot a newcomer

If i remember the sigil is *2 flank damage *0.5 attack so AT BEST it is useless because the bonuses cancel each other.

It's OT but see you are here: can you tell me what in hell does the Surprise Attack improvement to Deathblow? the in game description is very cryptic

Well, I thought it was actually this:

(1 + actual_attack - 0.5) * (1 + (2 * actual_flank))

But maybe you are right, maybe it is actually:

(1 + (0.5 * actual_attack)) * (1 + (2 * actual_flank))

In that case, even an actual_attack of 0 is still a net buff to flanking attack. But why would they write the spec as -50%? They don't write +200%.

True i didnt consider that damage is not base * attack but base * (1+attack)

Should be easy to test what formula is the right one testing with very low attack values, no flank and no armor on the opponent

First formula should give a damage of near half the base of the weapon, while the second one a value near the base

We need to see your stats and equipment

To give an example, and to get suggestions too, my lvl 26 glass cannon rogue assassin has 60% attack 165% crit dmg 19% crit chance and 50 armor penetration; crit chance is low because it becomes 100% when i'm in stealth. Armor 260 and elemental resistances around 20%

i posted my stats in an earlier screenshot. i'm playing as a KE. Gear as below:

Crafted Skirmisher Hat - 18 CUN

Crafted Superior BattleMage Armor - 7 CUN, 39 DEX, 13%MAG DEF, 7% MELEE DEF

Crafted Wrath of Lovias - 33% Crit Chance, 24% Crit DMG, +26 DEX.

Andraste Sacrifice

Superb Ring of Crit Chance

Superb Ring of Crit Dmg

Enhanced Beld of Inferno Pact.

Didn't put up the masterwork as i think the stats will do. Thanks for any suggestions!

Why the 39 dex in the armor piece and the 26 dex in the Lovias? you are a mage, even if a melee one, not a rogue and your attack depends mainly from the magic stat

IMHO you sacrificed too much attack to have the increase in crit chance

The masterwork is always nice to have, be it a guard on hit or an Hidden Blades proc; both are easy to get and add a layer of protection or some nice damage

I disagree.

Magic/Wisdom gets buffed automatically as you buy abilities in the skill trees.

After XP level 16 or so, and even before, switching build focus to crit/crit is optimal. Partly due to the passives that kick in, effectively increasing DPS by various means, such as cooldown reduction or elimination.

That said, it never hurts to buff Attack directly, like with a Superb Ring of Attack, or metal Offense slots filled with Everite or Magic/Wisdom if you get stuck with cloth Utility slots on gear that otherwise is primarily leather slots.

While 23% Attack is a bit low for that XP level, with 66/155 crit/crit, I don't think you have anything to worry about with respect to DPS.

What's the base damage of your staff? I'll assume 70, which is probably less than you have, but close enough. Plug you actual base damage into the following:

average damage = 70 * (1 + 0.23) * (1 + (0.66 * 1.55)) = 174

compared to a high attack, low crit/crit build:

average damage = 70 * (1 + 0.60) * (1 + (0.20 * 0.40)) = 120

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see the note where @Agi_'s getting 100% crit chance from Stealth.

Superb Ring of Attack is +10%. That's a start.
