Would you want the armor system to go back to ME 1 wear you can completely change everyone's look and then improve on that?
Would you want it to stay like ME 2 and 3 where all the companions just how their default 'iconic' armor?
Or maybe something in between the two? All of your companion have default 'iconic' armor but then you could add/customize pieces of it in a way (shoulders, legs. etc.), kind of like with Shepard's armor in ME 2 and 3.
I'd go with modular armor customization, something like what we've had for Shep in ME2-3. Keep their unique look, with some color customization, but with the ability to swap out bits to provide stat benefits (i.e. +25% Weapon Damage, +15% Health, etc.).
Also two or so casual outfits for the ship/hub areas would be nice.
I for one would like the ME1 and ME2 hybrid in ME:A - changeable (without DLC) and race-dependent armor suits from ME1 and customizability from ME2, but for all characters.
Both systems the Mass Effect 1 style and the Mass Effect 2/3 style have positives and negatives, personally I liked what they did with Mass Effect 2 and 3. My concern is if they decide to make the armor for our companions too elaborate they will reduce the amount of races that we can have in our party to ones that use the same armors as a human.
I agree with something akin to what DAI had; each member has a unique style so whatever armor you slap on them turns into their own individual page in vogue.
If they go the static armor route, though, I wouldn't complain if each 'upgrade' added or changed the color of something minor.
I liked the DAI route. Every companion have a personal style, and it reflect on the armour they wear, but the player can choose what kind of armour they have on. And outside battle, companions wear their iconic clothes.
I'm happy as long as I can have companions wear belivable armour in the battlefield (so I can have them not wear boobwindows with masks in space or venomous atmosphear that make me roll my eyes) than outside battle can wear whatever fit best their personalitly, I don't care.

ME1 all the way (with a twist: Let me paint the companion's armor like you can in ME2 and 3)...do away with that "iconic" BS (spend the time to develop that elsewhere, there's enough that needs doing better/fixing (like: Don't go down the ME3-Road, don't do an "artsy" ending (while discarding interesting plot-lines, like the dark-energy (sub-)plot...I mean the Quarians were willing to sacrifice a whole lot (for a dying people (remember: they don't have the personal to supervise prisons and they don't kill people as a punishment - not even for high-treason - because they think they can't afford to!) an entire marine-unit and their specialist on the Geth (Tali) is a LOT!) to get data on that, just for the writers to throw that out in favor of the damned BRATALYST and their deus-ex-machine (Crucible!)), just DON'T! Don't give us bland characters like Jacob, James, Kaidan etc. again either...I'd rather have a - WELL DONE! - Morinth again than those guys -.-)
greetings LAX
ps: Oh, and maybe don't have "billions" (well: many - too many!) useless armor pieces (do away with the "white" and "grey" loot (why would I be taking that trash with me, except to sell it...damned, let me make money in interesting ways, not by lugging **** around, I am not a dock-worker/truck-driver/delivery-man, I am a soldier!)...while still letting us strip an enemy (if we kill a merc in full armor we should be able to TAKE said armor, same for the weapons - and not find broken/weak (and cheap) crap that even a fifth rated police-unit on a backwater colony wouldn't use because pirats/slavers would laugh at them (and then kill them all the same!) - if we want to!)
1.- Pathfinder is restricted to military class (armour + upgrades + colour) + (fatigues selection and colour(s) customization)
2.- Ex Alliance military personnel restricted as above if members of the squad.
3.- EX MW Council squad members are forced to wear their own faction choices if military
4.- All others that make it in the squad have unrestricted armour + fatigues choices <== Helius Cluster races <== non military
One but big sticky point: A cut scene video vs cinematic animation.
I believe mocap animation for walking, idling, running, combat and sitting can handle various sartorial choices as it is only the final mesh (skin) overlay. However, a pre-rendered video presented as a cut-scene will pose problems. That is, what you wear in the game may not be what the cut scene will show. This was pointed out way back when the weapon choice from the game (trilogy) mismatched the cut-scene one. This is also true for armour/fatigues choices.
To fix this problem Bio needs to mocap everything. Then, the cut-scenes are just cinematics with the proper meshes applied in Real-Time. But, it may be too costly (think time, resources and money).
I'd like them to go the DAI route with companion armor
I liked the DAI route. Every companion have a personal style, and it reflect on the armour they wear, but the player can choose what kind of armour they have on. And outside battle, companions wear their iconic clothes.

Somehow the DA:I method of companion armor completely skipped my mind when writing this. I guess that would be a combination of all the ME games because the companion armor always has the 'iconic' look but you can change armor types and customize with additional pieces and change the color and patterns.
I vote for more the ME1 system... but with a few changes. I'd like to see some options for the squad regarding casual (i.e. out of armor) dress as well and the game keyed so that both the PC and the squad would change out from armor when appropriate. From ME2 and ME3, I liked the ability to change just the colors and patterns around and still keep the same stats on the armor, so I would like an ability to adjust color and pattern on all the various armor types offered in an ME1 type system. If the adjustment is to a "military uniform," then whatever color/pattern changes the player makes should be "universal" to all wearing that uniform. I would like retractable helmets on all armors... not where they are removed and not where they must stay in place (as in the purchased armor sets in ME3 like the Blood Dragon armor, etc.) I want to be able to see my PC's face and squad faces whenever they are in environments where it would be appropriate and they are not engaged in combat.
I won't mind a system like DAI, though I'd also be fine with a mix between ME1 and ME2/3 as we saw with Shepard. I'd be also fine with ME3 system, if they add a bit more options and stats to the armours.
I'm for the whole Inquisition style blueprint armour and weapons system. But I love crafting in video games so sue me.
I don't mind the crafting so much as the endlessly tedious - to me, at least - resource grind. If I never have to collect another chunk of Paragon's Lustre, or cutting of Elfroot, ever again, I'll be a happier person.
