I think is important for a developer like Bioware to hire few people for this task: creating surprises.

I explain: because in the process of creating a big game, everyone has his/her parts and task to tackle, I think something can be lost during the process. If there were few people like 3 or 4 individuals that could focus on  creating surprises as unexpected events or behaviours during the game, that could give a burst of energy and enhance the player experience.

For example, an enemy soldier that does not respect the ordinary ai routines and act completely different would surprise the player.

or, Inside the Atlas Mech there could be a fanatic soldier that screams and is wearing a skull- like helmet.

Or, an animal like a black panter inside a random room that does not attack and is really mysterious...and run away after a cut scene where is staring at Shepard very intensely....

Or a soldier that during the combat loses the helmet and has a beautiful female face...or an ugly terrifying contorted face....

Or a very old.looking character found randomly in a room who thanks in tears of gratitude his/her liberators.

Or a plant in a forests that strangle the closer character...enemy or ally.

Or simply a radio in a random room playing Mahler's adagetto from the 5th symphony.

Surprise! :-)

What do you think?

The base idea is actually a good one, things that break monotony from time to time would be welcome. (hopefully without 4th wall breakage)

I think you created this entire topic just to share your taste in classical music, but that's none of my business.

Unless she has a giant surprise under her pants, she wouldn't say that.

For a moment there I'd thought you said - IBS. But you didn't - so those around you can relax.

OP: The element of surprise is evident in humour and drama. Humour alone have 20 categories. If you have not witnessed it until now in mass effect, chances are that you won't notice it, whilst even stumbling over it.

Surprise? I know only Omelette Surprise - not really my cake of the day. I like more meaty stuff, even when it's made entirely from vegetables.

You just had to start  that on a Friday, now.
Didn't you.

Here I was, minding my own business, when. Wham. Cat runs in and mentions Meat in some dunno forum with a non-descript thread that is bound to be ignored anyway, one day later.

These predictable surprises will kill me some day.

"What do you do for a living?"

"Executive Surprise Technician."

"Really? That's surprising."

"I'm good at my job."

About Surprises

The idea is interesting. Best approach is to make them part of the overall game design architecture.

Plugging in an idea once the game schedule is approved is serious business, as it can negatively impact development time.

Oh, I don't know - it's actually surprising what you can create if you have practically nothing edible at home. I once did an excellent risotto with just apples and onions and some spices e.g.

Cool, but I can only approve fruit mixed with savory in Spanish food.  Or chutneys.   Apple, onion and spices?  Chutney.
