Are all event chests gone? Can a new player still get end-game gear through challenge completion?

I don't see 150 each as being that fast. I think I might have had that many promotions when Dragonslayer DLC came out - that is about 6 months playing the game for many hours a day. Granted I had been playing just Perilous then, but I don't think new players who jump to NM/HB are able to have a significantly better exp/minute output... I could be wrong, that is just my estimate.

All book chests are gone.  If I didn't have the book chests, I would only have 1 hakkon and no PI.   With the book chest, I am now 3 items away from CS.  Just need Hakkon Wrath, Wisdom, and Bolt.   I am at 120's on CON/Cunnings and under 90 on WIS.   It will be another 2 months or 3 before I will get to 150.  So that would be like 8 to 9 months of playing for me.    Without the book reward and the lowered drop rate of the top tier, I think a new player will need like 1.5 years of regular play to get the CS. :P

Almost one year playing, 126/130/112 and I still miss brand, dancers axe and PI.

And that's since January. Before that, only the Hakkons were hard to get, but now, even the lvl 27's weapons and the other accessories look extremely rare.

I will never get Crescent. I just accepted that. All level 27 items, I got from victory chest, except for Bosun´s Blade which I got by some magic from chest some time back in January. And I am still missing Brand and Dancer´s Axe (and Master Stamina amulet)

You definitly don´t need Master Stamina Amulet to be able to get Crescent. I got my Master Stamina after I got Crescent :D

It took me about 3 million gold to get the Crescent before the book challenges came out. Some people reported spending much more and not getting all items.
Those are 9 items altogether if I recall correctly (4 one-hand, 1 two-hand, 1 bow, 1 dagger, 1 shield and 1 amulet). The Hakkon stuff adds other 5 items (considering only one dagger). So it takes several million gold to get all the real unique stuff which are 14-ish items - while the other ones, despite being called unique will still drop repeatedly. There is also the rumor of 'max loot score', something which I never figured out what it is, but basically it benefits people who have played longer.

It seems like one Perilous match yields 800-900 gold, and one Nightmare match yields 1100-1200 gold. At any rate the grind is real.

I miss the days when seeing a druffalo struck fear into my heart and I said over and over in my head "please don't target me....please don't target me"

Ruuuuuuuuun!

Impaled. Dead.

That weekend when every match had a druffalo was brutal :) The memories.

Oh how I envy the new players sometimes. The rush they must get.

So back to the question: Is the game viable for a new player? Yes, yes, yes. Even with the bugs and glitches this game has and forever will have, this game scales well for beginners in my opinion. Obviously make sure you D/L Dragonslayer and Destruction multiplayer expansions so you aren't wondering for a week why there are almost no games with anyone in them like I did(haha....not that funny). Grind out a couple weeks of play on routine for level 1-5's and threatening matches to get you to level 14/15. By that point and with the right builds, you should be able to contribute to perilous matches, as most will have 1-2 pretty well experienced players that could clear the zones solo. From all the players I've come across, most will not mind if you die as long as you do so in a non 'Ram-bro' mode. Play with caution and stick with the pack. Make sure to do a lot of reading as to character builds before you aimlessly put points into skills and passives that don't compliment your style of play or the character's abilities. There is a TON of info to read in the first sticky multiplayer thread. I myself watched a lot of Angelus de Mortiel's character builds on youtube or listened to them while driving home to get a better perspective on how to play characters I- for a lack of better words- suck at.

Last piece of advice: Beginner characters that are not only fun, but survivable: Arcane Warrior with fade shield + chain lightning w/upgrade + stonefist w/upgrade gives a pretty durable and debilitating build and the self barrier should keep you alive. Level 1 sucks at any level as you are very squishy, but once you get fade shield, you should be good. Silent sister is tons of fun, especially once you get some good daggers. Go for abilities that improve your guard(war cry w/upgrade, flashing steel, charging bull.) Should be able to stab lots of stuff and stay in the middle of a pack of enemies, but does better on the outskirts of a pack. And then there's good old fashioned Legionnaire, since the other 2 I mentioned you need lots of material to unlock. Look for a good defensive build that will allow you to tank, but if you are left last standing on the boss, just die, no one likes to watch a 30 minute boss fight! Good luck!

Indeed.. just stay with the group unless you can solo it .. puhleeze!

Also, please don't keep opening doors by yourself when you immediately die.

(had a couple bad pugs this morning.. before ending up with a good group which ran for almost three hours)

Quick question, not really worth making a new thread...

I got the captain raver armor and it turns out to be worse than one of the 3 theme ones. Is it just a skin? More mats and less armor?

The armor tiers are confusing.  You will now need to make the Reaver's Inquisition Captain Plate (coloring scheme) and it will be a purple armor.  You will never wear the Reaver's Inquisition Captain's Plate but you need to make it first before the ones with the (coloring scheme) will show up in the Armor Crafting menu.  You could also make the Dread Reaver Mail and then the Dread Reaver Mail (coloring scheme).   It is the same in Armor rating as the Captain one but just look different.

Look here to see which armor to make:

HI Madfang.  I also am on PC and I have seen you in a few lobbies, now.  Welcome to multiplayer!

No.  It is not too late.  There are still new faces I see every week.  I have only been playing for a total of 4 months, off and on.

However you do have to really stick with it.  The drop rates for good items are very very low, and the tiers are very hard from one to the next.  The challenge is very steep between routine - threatening - perilous - and then ones above ... yeah.

I spend a few hours every day playing and I still feel like I am barely competent with the longtime players who zoom through everything on killing sprees before I get one or two shots in.  But, after some time, you become suddenly able to hold your own, at least some of the time.

For me the most important items have been the life drain rings - which I could only get gray for a very long time and now I have blue ones.  Healing bonus belt, and most of all, weapons which give you life back when you kill something.  All of those I did not start getting until after many hours of play.  But some say they get great items very quick - I think it is mostly luck.

But, most important, you have to level up all the different types (warrior, mage, scout) many times over to get the bonuses from the base stats.  That's probably the most annoying thing about it.  It is not so much skill as it is just repeat over and over to promote characters.  You will learn eventually some tactics, but this game is less about tactics than about sheer power - in my experience.  Yes you can hide in a room ... but most abilities from monsters go right through walls anyway so it is useless.  But you may learn how to position yourself to avoid archer arrows or horrible green demon spew which is usually what kills me. :D

YET it is very fun and the group play is much better than in some multiplayer games where people are only trying to compete and not help each other.  In this game if you do not help each other you all die and fail.  So that is nice. :) :D

Oh and about cloth.  Yeah.  It's the hardest to get.  Try breaking down all gray items and, later on when you get more good items, most blue items and even the Master runes, as well.  That will give more cloth.

Oh and disconnect/server/issues ... all have those.  It's so terrible.

Lately i've been getting very frustrated at the interface.

-Ok, let's backstab the mob i positioned for...

-*backstabs some other mob out of range*

-*Just autoattacks*

-*Is suddently locked in some animation unable to move or do anything for about 1-2 seconds*

-*tries to lock target on a mob so it attacks the right one*

-*can't find the area of the mob to click on and someone else kills it*

My raver has a purple captain armor and i can hold my own in the 2nd difficulty, threatning i think. Problem is i still need gold and most players there just skip all the rooms and the pot of gold so all i do is pick up for all 5 maps. Not to mention the raver bugs.

I kept a stick with about half the item level from my main staff to play with a lower character. New map, first pull: a giant.

Are we having fun yet? I really can't tell.

I've ran into those issues as well.  Especially the random freeze thing.

Best way to get gold is to find a group (preferably a group of friends) that you can do runs with and grab treasure rooms while powering through the mobs.  I think you've been having some rather bad luck with the randoms you bump into (we've all run into people like that), so try not to get discouraged by their speed-running attitude.

As for giant thing, well, we've all had moments like that.  I've gone into matches at level 7 without putting any points in beforehand because I completely forgot about it, only to get darkspawn or Qunari >_>

RNG is RNG

At least once a day I will forget to map a new spell/ability and it really frustrates me. I feel like I am letting the team down and as I do it so much I have no one to blame expect myself.

Last night we were doing a Duffy FC run will all NON-warriors. We get to 3/5 and SIX, yes SIX giants spawned all at the same time. I think the game does that crap on purpose! Between them and the seeming non-stop Qunari axe wielding maniacs, I couldn't believe we got through it.

I do the same with forgetting to apply points or switch gear from level 1 to x level. Even did it last night on our Nightmare FC run when I was leader! A.D.D. struck while we were waiting for a 4th to join, oh well! Good old Party rejoin made it fairly quick.

I was curious to the answers i got, dropped by after checking on something else.

Multiplayer is nice, but the grind factor of it makes it more hardcore than i am willing to take. I find myself playing single player more than multiplayer.

After a long break from MMOG dipping in MP might make me sub back to one of the games i left, after i finish what's on my plate (Witcher 3 then reruns).

Don't get me wrong, MP is great, just not for everyone.

I am one of those super DA fans and I love the SP game. Played it all the way through over 30 times with about an average of 130 hours each and a few that were near 200 (doing all the missions in/and all the DLC). I just love it.

Just started playing MP last few months and I find it adds a new perspective and as there is no new DLC for the SP, MP provides some nice DA entertainment esp considering its different every time. I also really like the "team" aspect.

That being said, once/if a new SP version of anything comes out, I will disappear from MP until I have completely played out the SP game many times.

I just wish, considering the vastness of the SP game, they could have added more maps to the MP game.

I had to force myself to even complete it once, and I shot for 100% just so I wouldn't have to do it again. It bugs me, considering how many times I played DA:O/DA2. If not for MP, this would be my least played Dragon Age.

I just wish, considering the vastness of the SP game, they could have added more maps to the MP game.

Just out of curiosity, do you not consider the SP maps to be oversized for the amount of content actually in them? I personally wish the entire game was designed like Descent, where you're given good-sized paths that converge rather than huge, open (and empty) spaces.

Can't disagree on wishing there were more MP maps, though.
