... which is not the worst thing to have in an eye - hand(mouse)-coordinated shooter, isn't it?

however, I also mean
knowing where to be and where the enemies are, how to avoid being hit, have good timing and movement and situational awareness and enemy- and game mechanical -knowledge.

if you lack these things, a good aim alone will never be enough

Tell that to people who only use BW. I am simply referring to FPS games in general (CS). And yes observational awareness is big in this game and understanding enemy movement/spawn locations. Also, when to missile and when not to.

^ Not if you bring enough dps to trivialize Gold. Then you can pretty much stand in front of a map and headshot melt everything that looks at you.

he was talking about hand-eye coordination.   This specific type is something you get inherited + is trained in your infant and childhood-years when those neuro pathways are developed.  Later, you have to "work" with these already built pathways and only make little progress, blablablabla (you know what I mean).

However - if this is the only thing you need to build up DPS in Mass Effect,

then please tell me why people make such a great progress from beginner to veteran - still learning new things after 500+ hours ?

Going from crutch to carrier of the team ?    From permanent subscriber of the 4th place to the top of the scoreboard ?

Exactly:  Because hand-eye-coordination is not the only skill people need and definitely not the only type of skill I was talking about.

Just one example of hundreds:   After you learn the enemies' movement patterns you suddenly land one hit after another - even if your aim is not the greatest.

With me, it was even more distinct.  I have never played shooter games before and I was the biggest crutch my teammates could possibly imagine. At least for one year or so.  While my aim was already good - I just did not know anything that was needed in order to be successful.

(actually, "skill" is the wrong word anyway - I just wanted to show the difference between "spending time with something" in order to get banners or actually being challenged for the challenges ;-).

Am I the only one who doesn't care at all about banners? I'm content with my alt survivor. Banners are like hats in TF2. They mean nothing in gameplay. they are purely aesthetic.

The reason you don't care is because you wear one of the best. Only a few people know this but : When the most elite players wear the Survivor banner, they're able to recognize themselves amongst scrubs. I've been told they glow differently. If you're wondering if yours does, you're probably a scrub.

Shooting video games actually help hand eye coordination to some extent.

I mean, I didn't really notice a difference personally. Then again, we only really played basket ball for years in high school... and really, I needed no help with that. It helped to be about a foot taller than everyone else XD My biggest advantage. :P

There are a few ways to implement skill-based challenges in this game, but it's hard to not make them very repetitive and conditional. For the sniper rifles one, it could be something like this "complete 5 matches in a row with a 80% ratio of headshots using sniper rifles". This may sounds challenging, but what would people do in the current system ? They would probably do 5 solos bronze, taking their time to adjust their shots and thus unlocking the banner without demonstrating any real skill. So to make the challenge skill-based it would be needed to limit it to gold / plat team games. This sounds like a good amount of extra code... not sure I want that for what its worth.

Also, what to do for assault rifles ? % of missed shots ? Why not, but now which challenge for SMGs ? Shotguns ? It looks hard to differentiate them in a meaningful way that could really show that a player is better with a category of weapons than with the others .

I would add to that it should be in Gold/Platinum PUBLIC matches

Also:  Cloaca Masticater Banner: Complete Black Widow Challenges before any other sniper rifle

I got all my challenges this way, resorting to Bronze and Silver only for requisite solos.

Other than bragging rights, is there any true meaning for such skill in a co-op game? Even the challenges you mentioned could be grinded for because you're fighting against a bunch of A.I and bots can be fooled.

The only banner I actually put a bit of effort to get was the dog of war banner with the flaming krogan from heaven pose. Just because it looks good and sounds good.

Scorewhore for 200K+

Gold medal for making sure games with full 4 players team take nearly 25 minutes.

Medick medal for not reviving anybody.

Bonus medal for not helping the team with any objectives.

Valiant effort medal for letting teammates get synced by phantoms.

I don't know.  Honestly, I have never been after challenge points because there was no challenge.

I don't understand the thing with N7 rank, either.   I think mine is 1000 or something.

My challenge points are < 60.000 and it actually is very hard to keep it under 60k  after having played for almost 2500 hours ;-)

The only challenge I could see (a little bit) was the lone wolf challenge - which is why I completed it deliberately.

There should also be a special medal for a volus that never heals anybody but themselves.

I'd say make it for a Volus that never locks anyone up, rather than heals only themselves.

Same, whatever challenge points I have are mostly a result of my random playstyle and not an outcome of conscious choice. My N7 is 300 because I never found a reason to promot and just use use up my respec cards when I feel like trying out a new build.

Even the lone wolf has plenty of people cheesing it with the reegar kroguard geth setup, so it's not as much of an indicator of skill either Imo. But essentially what I feel the developers have aimed for here is the notion that someone who has played a lot and invested their time in a variety kits/playstyles (which roughly translates to your challenge points) is at least a veteran of the game in terms of time played. It is assumed that the more you play the better you get and while that isn't true in all cases, generally I feel like it's a good yardstick of someone's interest in the game.

So when I see someone with a lot of challenge points and high N7, I don't take it as an indication of skill per se, but I can assume that the dude at least likes the game a lot and has seen some **** happen. Most high point players are pretty decent if not good but even if they aren't, maybe it's just a bad day. Anyways I just care about shooting reapers and having fun while doing it, preferably with some decent company!

You're just saying that because you don't have the glory of harnessing the power of the Heartbreaker Banner.

(It is pretty awesome I must admit.)

I'm sensing you aren't as enthusiastic about the Heartbreaker Banner as I am.

That makes me sad.

Don't make me sad. I'll bring on the man-tears and make you feel sad. And I'm an ugly crier.
