Firstly, I'd like to apologize if my title isn't exactly accurate to my inquiry. I'd also like to apologize if I somehow breached some kind of rule I may have missed in one way or another.

I was currently going through my umpteenth playthrough of Mass Effect, and I was originally planning on trying my hand at a NG+ run afterwards before importing the save to Mass Effect 2. (Correct me if I'm wrong, by the way. If I'm unable to change the difficulty, so on and so forth.) With the first playthrough, I was playing casual because I'm a casual, but the second time around I had planned to try Hardcore or Insanity. Since--at least from my brief experience--ME1 Insanity is for sadists (unless I'm just that bad at it,) I had wanted to speed run it to the end. Just to say I did it, and for the extra EXP and the like.

Now onto the question itself! For the speed run, I had wanted to avoid as many side quests as possible. Would the side-quest data (Such as getting Jemma, or Jenna or whomever out of Chora's Den) from the original casual run transfer to ME2, and then to ME3, or would I have to redo that quest in the NG+ playthrough? That's just an example for a side quest, I know Insanity has next to no real impact on that one specifically.

Thank you for reading, and have a nice day.

As far as I know, no plot flags are carried over with NG+. That means if you don't complete sidequests in NG+ run and import that into ME2/ME3, that's how they're gonna be flagged in those games - as not completed. Even if you did them in the pt that you started NG+ with.

If you really want speedrun for Insanity, maybe it's better to import your casual pt into ME2? As you said, on which difficulty you finished it doesn't really matter while importing.

Thank you for the quick response! That's a shame, but you're probably right about importing the previous save. Just need to make sure I hit certain achievements like Rich, since if I recall correctly that adds a little extra to Mass Effect 2. Less money issues and the like, but again, that's going from memory.

Avoiding Jenna's quest will have an effect in ME3 if you have Conrad Verner in ME3.

I did a speedrun that took 3 hours 26 minutes

When I do a speedrun, I skip through all the dialogue, run through a lot of the fighting. I recruited Garrus. Did not recruit Wrex. I went to Feros, Noveria and Virmire. You save time on Virmire not having Wrex with you since there is no scene with him. Off to Therum. Go to Ilos, then Citadel.

Since you're doing a new game plus. What you do in that playthrough is transfer to ME2/3 not what you did in a previous playthrough.

For a speed run of ME1, if would import a complete, well equipped Level 60 ME1 Shepard back into ME1 and follow the guidelines set out by themikefest.

If you're not concerned about continuity of the speed run itself, I would then import the previous complete Level 60 ME1 Shepard into ME2 (which will have all the ME1 side quests in place and give you all the ME1 to ME2 import bonuses).  You will be able to set the ME2 difficulty when doing the import and it won't matter that the ME1 file was done on Casual.  If you miss setting the difficulty, you can open the menu right when Shepard first wakes up before donning your armor and set it then and, as I recall, you can still get the insanity achievement.

I would recommend not speed running your 1st insanity playthrough in ME2, but at least do absolutely every mission you can before Horizon to get as much XP,  every upgrade you can afford (bypassing the useless ones like by hack and bypass modules), and do enough mineral scanning to process every upgrade you collect.  After Horizon, pick the 5-missions you have before the Collector Ship to get the max of what you feel you need most - could be money to buy specific upgrades, could be XP, could be recruiting squad mates with specific talents.  The Collector Ship is a tough go on insanity... and you'll want your Shepard, your weapons and your squad mates to be as strong as you can get them.  After the Collector Ship mission, things get easier.  You can skip missions if you want, but you may want to just finish them all off to give you max bonuses for ME3.  If you've done an insanity ME2 playthrough before and feel confident you can get through the Collector Ship with minimal strength... that's the time to then try a speed run of ME2.

For ME3, it's all about War Assets.  To be able to get a greater selection of endings in ME3, you'll probably want to import a complete (i.e. with all the sidequests) ME2 file rather than a speed run file.  Again, you will be able to set the difficulty when you do the import.  If you miss setting the difficulty, you can set it any time before you leave earth and it won't affect your ability to get the insanity achievement.

Of course, if you are concerned about the continuity of the speed run and want to make it go through the entire trilogy, only paragraph one applies and only what actually do in each speed run game will carry over to the next game in the trilogy.

I was going inquire about a similar thing, I just completed an NG+ run on insanity with the aim of setting up the perfect save state in ME2, however, having gone in to insanity from a hardcore run which finished at a little under level 53 I could only manage completing NG+ insanity on a little under 4k XP from level 60 :(

I'm guessing though that all of my plot flags would be erased if I took the save in to (essentially) NG++ to pick up the little amount of XP needed for lvl60.

Yeah, if you start another NG+ import, your flags all start from scratch again.  If you've done a few manual progress saves during your NG+ insanity run, you'd be bettter off going back to one of those and just redoing the latter part of the game doing more outside the Mako and being sure to open all the crates and collect all the minerals and such that are available to you.  You get a lot more XP for killing outside the Mako than you do for using the Mako, so if you did anything inside the Mako on the first NG+ insanity run, it really shouldn't be that hard to pick up a measly 4K in XP on a rerun through the latter part of the game.  I know Ive made Level 60 on a 2nd playthrough with a capped Level 50 ME1 (first-time) import, so you should be able to get there from Level 53.

I'm wondering... what is the lowest level ME1 file people have imported into ME1 a second time... and reached Level 60 in that imported playthrough.  I know I've imported a Level 50 game back into ME1 and made it to level 60 just before the final battle, but is it possible to make level 60 when starting out at level 49, 48, 47...? (of course, this is without doing any XP glitching).

I love questions like this, it's never difficult to nudge me into another playthrough. I did a minimal-XP run once for fun, ended up with about 69,000 at the end (level 32), though I realized that I could have gone even lower if I had removed the XP-based achievements first. Anyway, level 32 seems much too low to reach level 60 in a single playthrough, but I may give it a go.

Let me know how far along you get... Right now, I'm just starting to try to make an ME1 character that will end the game around Level 47 or 48... just to see if that's close enough to get to Level 60 on the second playthrough.  Have to finish off with one Level 60 first and then import that into ME2 first (my Xbox is at max importable ME1 saves... so each new one I do overwrites the last).

I finished my max-XP run with my level 32 soldier. I started the game with 69,420 XP and ended with 815,034, about 47k short of level 60. No cheats, not even to boost paragon/renegade. To be honest I was surprised I got that close. It proved to me that any level 40+ Shepard should be able to do it, though obviously the lower your level, the more your decisons must be based on XP.

If you make it to level 47 and on your NG+ you are willing to do sidequests and fight outside the Mako, I think you will make it to level 60. Good luck!
