Well, the setting just kind of evokes "all business" to me. Very remote, colonizing, alliances, science, etc. So it interests me as much as that goes. At this moment, I can't think of characters that need flashbacks for this.
I would've welcomed it with Shep... if only because I envisioned him to be a thug on Earth.. smuggling red hand or something. Maybe his girlfriend OD'ed and he decided to change his life and join the military. It would give my Shep an air of street wise badassery that wasn't in the games. I could only pretend it.
Well, I hope there'll be more then that. We'll have to wait and see I guess.
And I agree on the second part.
