I have to say because of replays that 2 was my favorite. The battle mechanics were better than the other two, my FemShep didn't run like a gorilla, the squad mates were awesome, the loyalty missions were awesome, the inventory and skills system was far more evolved and easy to use, and the DLC was far more plentiful.

I loved ME1. That new galaxy, experience, and genre feeling can never be replaced. Neither can the music, the Mako, the elevators (YES, the elevators), and the more involved story lines.

I hated that little plane in ME2 that you could spit into burning fragments. I also hated the mining. But...

ME3? There's nothing I hated more than that thrice damned reaper mini game. And the fuel depot thing. On an energy powered ship. Just lame. And then there's the multiplayer lie. And the endings (which I never got to cause of the mini game and refusal to do multiplayer)...

Meh. ME2.

A side peeve I have always had was with TIM; not the character, but the name. It is cheesy. It is like Doctor Evil. And the name is said all the time which only makes it worse.

They should've called him Bane. It's both not stupid and actually ties into the first game.

I think the Shepard resurrection angle was stupid, but outside of that, the game is excellent. They at least made the best out of the resurrection. So often in fiction they are done senselessly and poorly.

Emphasis mine

What? That is exactly what Shepard's death and resurrection are. Dramatic cutscene, great. Obvious, clumsy way for class reset, breaking up the old team, and railroading Shepard into working for Cerberus. Then characters barely react and Shepard isn't phased in the least bit. "Oh, I died? Whatever! I feel fine now!"

ME2 is definitely my favorite of the three, and one of my favorite games of all time. Characters, graphics (still find them pretty good, would love a full HD re-texture), settings, soundtrack, story, voice acting... All at the top or near the top of the genre. Its luster diminishes a bit when viewed within the context of the trilogy (because of things that don't fit / were never fully explained). But I don't let that bother me too much... Most of the time.

The generally smaller areas to explore were disappointing, though. Also, no Mako (seriously, give me the Mako back instead of that POS Hammerhead), and my god the planet scanning (seriously, WhoTF thought that one up?).

The story sucked on it's own too. What made ME2 shine were characters and gameplay.

Mass Effect 2 was the first of the Trilogy I played, back when I was 12 or 13 I think, on the Xbox 360. It's the only game I have any nostalgia for, probably because I didn't play ME1 and ME3 until a year or so ago on PC. But boy, it was worth playing it for the nostalgia itself.

Remembering the music, characters, missions... all the choices I made, and emotions these fake aliens on a TV screen made me feel. Mass Effect 2 was really an experience like no other. As corny as that may sound.

I've played ME2 a couple more times recently - and it really isn't quite as, um, magical as I remember. I don't know what it is. Maybe it just happens to everyone as they get older. But I can say one thing for sure, the intensity of the Suicide mission ALWAYS get's me. Like, always.

I mean they used it to create the Cerberus arc, and made Liara's story more interesting; especially if romancing her. Do not get me wrong. I still think it was stupid, but they made the best out of a stupid situation,

I mention once before somewhere in Bioware forums, if someone could make the Mako actually fly decently (mod?) I'd replay ME1 over more, I loved that game, much like what MsKlaussen said about it above:

ME2's plot was basically the opposite of ME3's. ME2 started off with a stupid opening, and got better and better until the finale, which is still my favorite ending in video game history. ME3 had a great opening, but about halfway it became apparent that the game couldn't meet its lofty expectations and the ending was bad. To me, ME3 tarnishes the series but makes ME2 stand out even more for the excellent game that it was.

Mass Effect 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time and has one of my favorite soundtracks in anything, period. It also has a wonderful atmosphere (it did a superb job at pulling off that gritty cyberpunk feel) and some great characters. Also, I'm amazed that a game that came out in 2010 and plays very well on last gen consoles and outdated PCs can have the lighting effects that it has.

Well, the combat was great and much improved. The skill tree and inventory system was improved and obviously the game looked better then ME1. The squad members were great, more fleshed out then in ME1 and the missions involving recruitment and loyalty were great. However, the worldbuilding went to the way side from ME1 in favor of action and the story was inconsistent. The beginning especially felt weird, strange and confusing. Surely if the writer really wanted Shepard to work with Cerebus they could have come up with something besides killing him? Also the decision you make at the end is made moot in ME3.

I just finished this whole series on Mass Effect yesterday and I actually really liked his possibly alternate take on how ME2 could have gone. http://www.shamusyou...edtale/?p=28475

Bioware's last truly great game, IMO. While it's my favourite Mass Effect because of the worldbuilding, I'd funnily enough consider it the least essential game in the overarching plot of Mass Effect. Barring Arrival, there's nothing that really progresses in the main plot, with the Collectors being introduced and eliminated within the same game.

What world building?

To be fair, there was some. For example, the part where...we find out about...that person in that place...that did the things and...the...Omega! In Omega we learn that there are the Vorcha. And by looking at them, we see that they are creatures that...do things. Then we hear that Archangel is this dude what shoots the bad guys, and they don't like the fact that he shoots them.
