I'm revisiting DA2 after 5 years.

 

Here's what I've noted so far.

 

1. I'm enjoying it.

2. PC graphics have come a long way in 5 years.

4. I prefer this combat system over both of the others.

5. Kirkwall is sparsely populated.

6. The linear direction and focused questing is something I appreciate.

7. The conversation wheel doesn't remove questions you've already asked, when you are investigating.

8. This game is a little bit darker than I remember.  It's not a happy game.

9. I forgot about the passage of time in the plot.  Nice.

10. This story is more morally complex than DAI.

 

I'm not making judgments; I enjoy all 3 games for different reasons.  I'm enjoying DA2 more than I thought I would and more than I did when I originally played it.

I really enjoyed this game and have replayed it a number of times.

 

I thought the characters were great, I enjoyed the combat, and actually the look and feel of the thing really appealed to me.

I also thought the story was well done, and engaging.

 

Having said that I felt also that #2 was a bit of a missed opportunity: the time thing wasn't that well implemented, and it did feel rather rushed overall - this was a shame because actually if you just gave it a little bit it was as I've said really engaging and good looking.

 

It's unfair to compare it to #1, because it is very much its own game and doesn't pretend to be the same as #1. It has a different story to tell, a much smaller one and I think that overall it achieves that.

It's just frustrating it's not quite the game it so deserved to have been.

 

One thing it did NOT deserve, was the level of hate directed at it, but gamers are partisan individuals at the best of times, I gues. I should know, I am one!!

The DA2 a game which requires playing again. A lot of people enjoyed only the second time, especially for those who are so much loved the DA:O, because the two are completely different. Perhaps this game requires more mature thinking. Anyone who expects a typical heroic tale, its not going to like Hawke's "prosy" and hopeless dark story.

I think the DA2 is special, I like so much.

Anybody can enjoy a game for the sake of enjoying the game, and not taking it seriously, so for enjoyment factor this game or any game have it's enjoyment factor. But what the real issue between these 3 Dragon Age games? Someone enjoy or not is not the issue, I enjoy Dark Souls and i know many people hate that game

 

The real issue is not about the game at all, but something else, about Bioware, about EA, about what they did to the franchise, the sudden change, the unnecessary changes, that what pissed original fans off. They can make DA2 and DA:I the very same like they make DA:O for the sake of making a game for their beloved fans, they could make new games similar to DA2 and DA:I with new title, but no, they want to buy the casuals, they make changes for the casuals...and there is the issue.

It's like a statement; forget about Origins, we need to make something different because almost everything in the last game was wrong. And sooo many things about what is different in DA2 are simply put, terrible...

 

Something curious, though, is how the game has found its niche fans over the time. Some people seem to believe that you need some kind of acquired taste (or maturirty) to like the game. To me, is exactly all the way around: DA2 is a simpler game for not-so-mature people. 

 

But I guess is just a matter of preference. As I see it, DA: Origins is like classic literature. And DA2, just a fool but funny series directed to teens.

I have mixed feelings about the game overall I guess.

 

In terms of gameplay, the classes feel more balanced and the combat more dynamic, but the lack of a bird's eye view and additional waves of enemies spawning mid-fight drag it down.

 

Storywise, the main plot is more complex than that of Origins which is a welcome change (I found the subplots more interesting than the main plot in Origins) but it suffers from unnecessary timeskips and other interruptions. It also feels very disconnected from the first game's story.

I like both DA2 and Origins equally. They're different - I mean, Origins is about saving the world, DA2 is about protecting your new home. While DA2 can be incredibly repetitive, the storyline is good IMO, the characters varied and different, and the hero an unlikely one - perhaps even unwanted. They're pretty different, and no, DA2 isn't for people more or less mature... It's a different story, meant for the same people who liked Origins, though executed wrong, one might say. I loved DA2, and it's the one in the trilogy I can replay over and over again. I also loved Origins though, and what can I say? They're both great, just written differently.

Though, I so agree. The dungeons are ALL the same, it gets boring going through the same two caves, and the Mage-Templar thing seems tacked on to the story. Which isn't a good thing.

It should be said that DA2 is also pretty disappointing for someone who expected Origins 2.0. I played DA2 before Origins, so I didn't get that. Replaying it after Origins, it does seem a tiny bit weaker, but I still love it. While I can wish they'd, say, had more companion conversations, they also worked on it for only eighteen months, right? Not as much time as was put into Origins.

You can have your opinion, like it or dislike it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it's a game I will come back to, again and again.

This must be an example of the kind of maturity needed to like Dragon Age 2.

I did actually enjoy DA 2 more than I had originally when I replayed it prior to playing DA:I (I replayed both DA:O and DA 2 then in order to nail down the choices of my two characters I was going to use in the Keep). The combat, in comparison to DA:I, was better than I remembered it -- the system was still recognisable as compared to DA:O at least, although there are still some large annoyances for me there. The handling of the voiced character also didn't seem quite as bad when compared to having just played the latter two ME games.

 

I still think the ending would have been better were it more different, but overall the plot was never the problem I had with DA 2. It still has essentially no replayability for me -- the only way I did replay it was to replay it using the exact same character as I did the first time -- but it was a better game than I remembered it being. Still disappointing for many reasons compared to DA:O, but not bad on its own merit.

I think the Combat for Rogues is really fun both Archer and DW.  The feeling of being vulnerable and having to run or stealth. 

 

I thought the Warriors were a little boring.  And the Mage was okay but really liked the Archer.

 

 

Anyway who knows DA2 might be the last great BioWare game before there was too much EA interference and the old founders of Bioware left.

IMO this is the only DA game in which all 3 classes are fun to play in almost equal measure, they also feel fast and powerful.
Although DAO Mage was way more powerful.
The DW Rogue here is a beautiful battle vision to behold.

Its a really curious game, because so many people seem to enjoy it much more than the first time when they replay the game a second time, sometimes years later. This was certainly the case for me, I played it once when it came out, and I did enjoy it. I just didn't think it was as good as Origins, but still it was a game I liked a lot. Then Inquisition came out, I finished it and thought "I only have one completed world on dragon age, I need more, especially because of the dragon age keep!". So I drafted out characters to roleplay, over the course of three more worlds. I embarked on playing all the games once again!

 

Now currently I am only just finishing my second world (doing the Inquisition DLC's now), but this involved playing DA2 for the second time, years later. I enjoyed it more than my second play-through of the other games. Hawke was my favourite character to roleplay is the main reason for this. Maybe a part of this is because it was the character I did the best job of forming a real personality before I played the game, and knew how to approach it. However, I also think a lot of it is because of the story and decisions in the game. They just make it real good fun to roleplay, testing you characters personality to the limit with a few decisions. It's just hard to explain why I enjoyed it so much second time, but I did.

 

I fully look forward to playing the game a third and fourth time as I slowly complete the four world states which I really want to complete before the next game comes out.

I'm on a replay of DA2 after being away from it for several years and I'm enjoying it. I hated it when it was first released and was ready to give up on the franchise altogether, but Hawke won me over. Whatever I think about her effectiveness (and I still have to mull that over) I enjoyed Sarcastic Hawke. She's a personality that is sorely lacking in my Inquisitor.

 

The repetitive maps and relentless enemy spawns aren't as annoying as I remember them three years ago, or whenever my last playthrough was. And yes, I do find it to be a much more morally questionable game. For all of DA2's faults, I do think there was a good deal of freedom to roleplay especially in the third act. All in all, I have a much higher opinion of the game than I did when it was first released.

There was no question in DAI or DAO about what you were going to do as the protagonist - but in DA2 I think it is not obvious at all.  You truly can decide what you believe.  It's rather interesting and I think it's the best of the 3 games as far as the "moral dilemma" goes.

DA2 is, by far, my favourite game of the franchise. Love the characters and storyline:

• Varric - love him in DA2 but he really fades in DAI - Varric was failed in DAI!
• Isabella. Isabella, Isabella. The best ever character. I love her. Cheeky gal.
• Hawke - the best protagonist. Witty, sharp, emotional.
• Love the way I get annoyed at irritating Sebastian. What a self righteous clown.
• I want to go to the Hanged Man for a pint.
• Anders.....hmmm. He could have been better. I liked the dafter version from Awakenings.
• Fenris...ok. Zzzzzzzzzzz.
• Merrill - story a bit weak but still ok.
• Didn't mind the reused maps.
• Loved the interaction with the DAO characters - much better than in DAI.

Yes. Except that I think Anders is excellent. At least as much as in Awakening. One of my favorite. And Fenris? I love him too. More than a brooding poor ex-slave mage-hater, although at first glance, irritated me a bit .... Carver is incredible good as annoying little brother. All character are brillant, I think.

For me, it's the combat that shines most in DA2. Baring in mind it's at least 75% of the actual gameplay is combat, it's important to get right, and frankly DA2 did. It got a lot of stick for being cartoonishly OTT at first, but still it's involved, complex and challenging. And the cartoonish style can be excused by those who need such things (ie me) with the Varric-framed-narrative rationalisation.

 

I think this is what makes it more enjoyable on a replay. When you're paying less attention to the story and just playing for the fun of the experience DA2 is a lot stronger.

I too started playing DA2!!, I haven't finished DAI because get so boring haven't pass the lvl 10 belive it or not! got the game  long time ago, still can't make myself to finish it. 

 

The truth? I find DAI  tedious. 

 

 dao and da2 are alot more fun!!!

I agree. IMHO DAO and DA2 are the true Dragon Age Experience.

All this talk about maturity is nothing but blanket statements. Liking or disliking DA2 doesn't make anyone more or less mature. To say that it is a game for "less mature" people or "teenagers" is the same as those who say "only mature" people enjoy it. That's just hypocritical.

 

I love all 3 games for their own reasons. No, they aren't perfect. No, DA2 isn't the game it deserved to be. For me they're all still worth revisiting any time and are all special for different reasons.
