A Chair of Commanding (or What Do You Want from the Ship's Bridge/CIC?)

Since we've got more-or-less no new game information to talk about at the moment - EA Play really can't come soon enough - I thought I'd indulge myself and make a thread about... Chairs. Or, in a broader sense, how we'd all like the Tempest's bridge/CIC to look. There's the classical Star Trek model, my favourite example of which is pictured above, with the captain seated in the middle with an array of stations all around, and a viewscreen up front. The advantage of this design - and, indeed, the reason why Star Trek used it - is that it makes for an excellent venue for conversations between characters, whether on the bridge, or hailing from another ship, displayed on the viewscreen.

699.jpg

Or there's the Normandy's 'Turian-inspired' design, with a cockpit up front, a long corridor with stations various, and then the Galaxy Map and a podium for the commanding officer. Back when Mass Effect released in 2007, the Normandy's CIC - and the wonderful Galaxy Map, in particular - did a fantastic job of setting Mass Effect's ship design apart from its space opera forebears, even if it did preclude the kind of organic bridge-based conversations you tended to get in episodes of Star Trek, since Joker had to radio back from the cockpit.

I suppose the question I'm asking is: what do you want? Do you think we could do with a chair for Ryder to sit in, and command from - I did enjoy my Inquisitor's throne swagger - or should the Tempest take more from the Normandy's design?

Either way, I think some take on the Galaxy Map concept is an absolute must.

I like the bridge set up that the SRF-003 Calnus has in Star Ocean: The Last Hope, so something akin to that.

Ooh, I like that. Efficient use of space - as sci-fi spaceships go - and you'd be in a good position to either command the ship - as we know we'll be doing to at least a limited extent in Andromeda - or talk with your crew.

I think ME3's bridge is my personal favorite so I wouldn't mind something similar.

Yeah, the Galaxy Map's absolutely vital, however they fit it in--it's about as iconic to Mass Effect as, I dunno, the viewscreen is to Star Trek. I wouldn't mind if they framed it a little differently, though.

Good, goood... use the chair young Jedi, let it flow through you. Feel its power. I know you want to take it from me-- DO IT!!! Strike me down with it, and role the Andromeda Galaxy.

Yeah, I liked how the Calnus looked, both inside and out. It had plenty of space but also an efficient use of most of it.

Here's a video that shows more of it, and gives better dimensions:

I feel like the Dark Side would've held greater appeal if they'd really emphasised the ominous throne privileges in the recruiting literature.

That aside... Old Palpy's picture actually gives me an idea: what if the Galaxy Map were positioned directly behind the captain's chair - assuming we have one - ? That way, if you're in a hurry and just need to set a course, you could use it without sitting down, but if you are sitting down, your chair could rotate all dramatic-like to face the map.

I'd like the galaxy map to be smaller. Or maybe have a big one somewhere else in the ship that shows our progress and can check on colonies or something, and a small one on the command chair which you use to choose the destination.

I feel like the Tempest could really benefit from a small stage in the entertainment area where small purple-haired people - (what appears to be a) techno school mizugi optional - can perform awkward stand-up comedy routines.

I'm actually not joking. I just imagined Garrus doing stand-up, and I'm now sorely disappointed that no such thing existed on the Normandy.

So, the full-size map would be like the Crucible hologram in the Normandy's war room, while we'd have a smaller version on the actual bridge? I could get on-board with that - in Star Trek, they did something similar, with the Stellar Cartography room - though I think I'd miss having the full-size map on display all the time.

Something like that.

I'm actually curious what they are going to do with the galaxy map. Since we are only exploring a single star cluster, will we even have a galaxy map? Will it just be of the cluster, or something like we saw in the E32015 trailer?

I'm guessing it'll be just the cluster, but displayed like the old galaxy map. Space is huge, as they say, so there's still plenty of stuff in a star cluster to fill a nice-looking map.

I'm anticipating that the Galaxy Map (navigation) will be pretty much as they showed in the "Ghost Riders" trailer... with individual page-like screens the player can leaf through to select a mission planet and then a cinematic that shows the map location and cut to FTL.  I'm also thinking it will share the setting with the comms room so that visual comms will be viewed on the same screen(s).  The could also add a command seat and other seats on the bridge though (behind the pilot's seat) rather than just having the commander and others standing free (and sometimes getting tossed about the space like rag dolls).

I dunno about the cinematic cut, but only 'cause the leaks so far have pointed towards the whole 'ship flies to planet' process being seamless, and possibly manually controlled to some extent. It'd also be difficult to explain our knowing what the surface of a planet looks like before we've even sent a probe out.

There is a good chance they're gonna keep the whole page-scrolling thing, though.

I'm anticipating that missions will come to light through info coming back from probes... so part of what those probes send back could be film of the planet's surface.  I am curious about how the "seamless" comments will fit into things as well.

Such pretty colors, I'm excited to see what the final version looks like.

I'm excited to see any of it, honestly. They could release some screenshots of the Tempest's toilets and I'd get excited. The new map's gonna be a definite highlight, though, along with whatever the hell this thing is:

Map? Scanner? Super Omni-tool? Whatever it is, I want it, and I really hope it's an actual thing that'll serve an actual purpose in the game.

Something like this would be nice. There are some interesting things on the HUD that ME:A could use for the Ark/Tempest.

I really should get around to playing that game sometime; the bridge-view looks super cool. And yeah, it put me in mind of Prometheus, too--I'm guessing that was the inspiration.

I honestly preferred the brighter colours of 2's SR2 CIC, but that could be my general distaste for 3 talking. I wasn't massively keen on the Alliance paint job, either: I think I'd been hoping for a return to the SR1's silver, red and black:

The thing with the bright colours was that it cut away from the submarine like feel. ME1 had a really good visual style that ME2 sadly abandoned.

Oh, I agree that ME2 didn't have nearly as strong an aesthetic as ME1 - ME2's still my favourite game in the trilogy, on the whole, but ME1 definitely had a more distinct visual identity - but I don't feel like the ME3 aesthetic - as applied to the Normandy, or anything else - really helped with that. If anything, it just muddied the waters further.

I particularly didn't like the new Alliance colour scheme: it gave the organisation a more easily recognisable look, I suppose, but it felt so forced, particularly as we'd never seen any hint of it previously. I think it would've worked a lot better had it not been quite so overbearing--you only need so many Alliance logos, and so much blue paint, to make your point.

And the Normandy interior just came across - to me, at least - as them having turned a bunch of the lights off and scattered some extra exposed cabling about.
