Star Trek in comparison, established alien mentality rather well when it came to the Cardassians. It's mentioned in one of their earliest appearances that when put into a room with them, they'll instinctively attempt to establish dominance and prove they are the alpha male, much like wolves. This is part of the reason they always seem to be manipulating people, project a veneer of superiority and treat everyone in the room as merely window-dressing to them. It's not that they're inherently "evil", it's simply that's the way their psychology operates.

This seems like as good an opportunity as any to mention how much I'd like a companion a lot like Garak.

No one mention Volus?

The Volus are the Goblins of Harry Potter, or the Dwarves of LOTR, they like money and precious metals, and are competent and vicious bankers.

It is related to the Morally Bankrupt Banker trope, and has some antisemitic undertones as another iteration of the Space Jews trope.

All in all a bland and redundant trope race without any real substance (what exactly do we know about them?...), that was eventually delegated the comic relief job in the MP.

Which is incredibly annoying considering the potential for the species in the beginning of the trilogy. Sure they had the 'space banker' hat from the get go, but one has to consider the sheer power of a species that created and manages the entire galactic economy.

If the series wasn't bending over backwards to make humanity the special snowflakes, there would have been no realistic way that the human business interests would have come even close to matching one tenth of one percent of the Volus' financial, and economic prowess. If anything, the Alliance should have been groveling to the Volus for loans and back room deals to even compete with well established companies with thousands of years of experience in interstellar trading.

But no, they're just fat midgets with asthma, and humanity is able to surpass them in areas that they created the rules for, despite only existing as a member of the galactic community for ~30 years.
