Hey guys, a friend of mine happened across what appears to be an as-of-yet-unannounced prequel novel for Mass Effect: Andromeda, and I didn't find any mention about it in English yet.

Estimated release date looks to be August this year, but other links show a more believable late November release date instead, so there's that.

I don't know about you guys, but I always felt miffed about not having read the prequel novel to the original Mass Effect before playing the game, so I made sure not to repeat that mistake with future games, which is why I'm up to speed with pretty much every novel and comic book ever released that's related to Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Except for Deception. I heard it's a bit iffy with canon.

Anyway, here's the link:

How neat is that?

Edit: Oh look, they deleted the page.

Whoops.

I bet people thought Deception would be "neat".

Well, the people on Reddit think she is a pretty good writer and she seems to be a Mass Effect fan.

We'll see. Will definitely read it.

Maybe this is the reason we are not having any news, in order to buy the comic... :?

Classic Bioware, giving us a novel to sate our appetites for the next game. Not complaining, but curious. Hopefully it will offer some explanations.

I'm not sure I believe this. N. K. Jemisin is too "legit" an author to be doing a video game tie-in book.

Huge coup for Bioware if its true, though.

It'll probably be better than Ascension, Deception and Retribution, unless Cerberus shows up.

Only the Avatar, master of four elements can stop them. But when Mass Effect needed him most, he vanished...

I just hope this book is like some of the others where because it answers important things, the games don't since Bioware assumes you read the book.

Ugh back story and exposition that should be in the game but instead via a book? Not this crap again.

Nice. I had never read a book about a game 'til last year i read "Bioshock: Rapture", which was lot of fun. I don't know if the "da book is always better than the movie" saying also applies to videogames though, but i'm willing to give this book about Andromeda a shot, since the game won't come out 'til next year

It's kind of different. A book is (generally, as far as my experience goes) better then the movie about said book. In this case the videogame is the primary source, though the books about videogames expand the universe of the vg, they don't tell the same story of the vg.

Do people actually read these things? Or is it like Halo where it exists so you can say it exists even though nobody reads it?

I've read a few of the ME and DA novels. They range from mediocre (Mass Effect: Revelation) to actually pretty good (Dragon Age: Last Flight).

Jemisin, huh? *goes to wiki* That's some nice reward list, impressive. Wait, what is it?

"During her delivery of the Guest of Honour speech at the 2013 Continuum in Australia, Jemisin complained that 10% of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SWFA) membership voted for conservative writer Theodore Beale (also known as Vox Day) in his bid for the SFWA presidential position. She went on to call Beale "racist, misogynistic, and hateful" and noted that silence about these issues was the same as enabling."

Oh, looks like she'll blend in perfectly.

Nice input. A book about a videogame can't really "narrate" a gameplay, but it should make the game universe more interesting.
Either way, i hope this book is released soon =D

N K Jemisin? Well, at least there is a writer who has proven her competence this time. I read three of her books, and they were fascinating. Not exactly my favorite type of story, but really well-written.

If MEA's quality as a game and a story will be to the trilogy's as Jemisin's writing is to Karpyshyn's, then it will be a very good game.

Given your general stance on ME3, you might want to read Jemisin's comments about Mass Effect in her blog (back in 2014, when she played it)...

I don't exactly disagree with most of what she said. It's more that the issues I have with ME3 don't seem to bother her, and her issues with ME1 were a complete non-issue for me. In any case, I see no indication she'd have a cavalier attitude to ME's lore. Also, her radical stance on issues of gender and race doesn't dominate the books I read of her. Meanwhile, these books *are* well-written, which is more than you could ever say of anyone involved in the trilogy's writing except for Patrick Weekes, and his books came out after ME.
