The same reason i like Kirk/Picard books... or Star wars books.

Which is?

Also, why would Shepard be necessary to expand the universe of Mass Effect?

If anything, Shepard would limit what the writers could expand upon and what stories they could write because there'd have to be a plausible reason for Shepard to be included in the story's events as well as making sure said events would not conflict with Shepard's established history and movements in the games.

I consider Mass Effect to be a fictional universe that has plenty of potential and is interesting without Commander Shepard.

Yes ..maybe...but why not? is not Shepard the main character? would that be so surprising to want books about "him"?

Would be a crime to have books about Mass Effect story? with Shepard? you re telling me that there`d have to be a plausible reason for Shepard to be included on books about a story that he is the main character?

What about if they decided instead to write their books about the "least played" Shepard?... because that is something they could as easily opt to do as writing about the most played one.

Why not? if there is a market..go for it...should i be offended for that? i even wouldn t mind to read about a female Shepard.

Whats wrong about that?

It would be an offense if some writer wrote about the most played Shepard for example? would someone felt offended? i surely wouldn t be.

I would. And I doubt I'm the only one.

And "most played"... Tell me, how can you tell how many of those who played the "most played" (paragon male according to you) Shepard are actually interested in books? What if it turns out renegade female Shepard dominates among those that buy BioWare books? And they refuse to buy it because of wrong Shepard?

Maybe bioware message of tolerance in games is futile after all.

I realize that romance is a "Bio trademark". Also, no objections. However, as an aRPG video game that emphasizes exploration and colonization struggles, romance should reflect that type of social pressures and not today's  social freedoms.  I conclude it's a message they wish to push and not one of necessity for the "game's success".

Okay, so you'd be totally happy with scrapping alien romances? As well as all casual sex? I mean, reproduction would have to be highly controlled and monitored to ensure genetic diversity, if we're going with your scenario. Aliens would be just as out of bounds as someone of the same gender. The player wouldn't get to choose their LI, obviously, because ~a focus on survival~ means matching them up with somebody with the best genes.

I think that scenario is ridiculous and would never be written as the background to the game, and the only reason you're inventing it is to find an excuse for MEA to not have LGBT content.

As I've explained before, it makes perfect business sense to include non-heterosexual romances. There is a significant chunk of their audience who use that content, and who buy games primarily because it features that content. By including optional same-sex relationships and other characters (like a trans man in DA:I) Bioware gets extra sales on top of all the people who buy their games for the combat, exploration, RPG mechanics or heterosexual relationships.

LGBT content isn't *required* for the game's success, but neither is any sort of romantic content. They could probably cut every romance and still sell the game as an RPG with combat and exploration mechanics. Like all the romance content, it's an optional extra that gets people who are really invested in that sort of characterisation to buy the game.

I can't for the life of me work out why people like you get so worked up about optional content that other people find enjoyable, but you never even have to use.

Let's play a game of Let's Say;

Let's say that they do create a canon Shepard. Now canon Shepard is a male Sole Survivor with the Earthborn background and is Paragon. That Shepard would not have much in terms of personality because the players for a large part shapes that in the games so the writers need to write one for this Shepard so that the character can think and act in accordance.

The result? This canon Shepard would likely be nothing like the Shepard that the audience is familiar to and so would essentially be a different character that shares Shepard's name and might share some of their background as well.

Basically, this canon Shepard might as well be a different character so why are they not? Why does the story of this or that book need for the character to be Shepard?.

But that's the problem. Shepard isn't a set character in the same way as Picard or Kirk. What makes the paragon male Shepard interesting to you is specific to your experience playing that version of Shepard in the game.

That's putting aside that for many, the customization options are precisely what makes Shepard appealing, not a specific version of the character.

I don't usually read any media dealing with video games (except for game reviewing sites) about video games.  This is one reason why I didn't read any of the Warcraft stuff and felt completely lost in that game.  I mean, I played all the games, isn't that enough?   Well, apparently not.  I don't usually watch any TV programs (outside of youtube and video game commenters) on them either.

Reason :  Most of them are so cryptic and so obfuscated that the writer knows what they're trying to say and maybe 1/4 of the audience will as well.  For others, it's just a word salad.  It kind'a goes back and forth from being overly explained to being cryptic.  I'd like a tad more consistency.

ME is the first game that actually made me wanna read a book about their universe.  And that's a feat.

@james

Because he can be paragon or renegade or gay or female or male?

I wouldn't be offended, but I wouldn't be interested. The most played shepard is 100 % paragon, nice and all. It would bore me to death to follow his adventures,  annoyingly thinking sometime that my own shepard wouldn't behave that way. It would certainly make me roll my eyes sometimes. No, I'd rather we expand the universe without this burden that is the normally customized PC suddenly turned into a set protagonist that some or many might not be able to enjoy. It's way more interesting for everyone I think, despite the preferences for one way or another.

It worked fine with dragon age and previous mass effect books in my opinion. ( I didn't read deception though )

But thats completely normal...if someone write about a Shepard gay i wouldn t read it too. Or a complete renegade one for that matter. If i have no fun why should i read it or buy it? that doesn t mean i would be offended ofcourse.

As i ve said it shouldn t be impossible to do this for Bioware.

Heimdall, thats exactly what i am discussing. i know that.

But the fact of Shepard is not a so set character as Kirk means its impossible for bioware to open non canon rights to writers? or even to make a recollection of the most played Shepard and write about that? they have that kind of data have they not?...you probably know that better than i.

Would that be bad?

Who has said they would be offended? His point is that he doesn't need to be offended to not be interested. The fact of the matter is that not many people would be interested in reading a book about any Shepard but their own.

Yes, I said I would be offended (maybe I should use angry or upset to be more clear?). But then you went out with whole "tolerance" thing. This has nothing to do with tolerance. It's more about this:

if someone write about a Shepard gay i wouldn t read it too. Or a complete renegade one for that matter. If i have no fun why should i read it or buy it?

See? If Shepard didn't match what you posted before, you wouldn't buy it. If BioWare decided to go with Shepard you don't enjoy, you would be excluded from this particular part of franchise. I don't know about you, but I would be upset if I was excluded from enjoying part of franchise I love so much.

Listen, I understand that you're ok with set Shepard. I'm not saying it's wrong on your part. I actually envy you a bit, because I'm too attached to my Shepard to trully enjoy anything with set one. But please, next time don't make assumptions that I'm "intolerant" just because something would upset me.

What would be the point? People are interested in THEIR Shepards, not Shepard as a character independent of the player's control.

Sure they could do it, but it doesn't offer much that would actually be appealing to many people. I for one prefer Bioware to expand the universe outside of the main character and explore other areas that they didn't have a chance to in the game.

Of Course i wouldn t buy it..that's normal..but hey i m not against it..i wouldn t be upset, angry and even less offended if they decide to do it. I am a good fan but i do not exaggerate  (not implying its a bad thing if you do)

Sorry about the tolerance, but as you said maybe you shouldn t have used the offended word..anyway i apologise.

The fact of the matter is that not many people would be interested in reading a book about any Shepard but their own.

So because of that, it is impossible to wrote for the "set" Shepard?

I put a graphic about ME 3 some posts behind but i think there is  official data from bioware of the typical Shepard through all 3 games.

Would that majority of players be interested in reading about that Shepard?

So, do not create it. Most Star Trek books are not canon. Or even all of it i think, if official episodes excluded.

If there was a "trend" of common Shepards, they'd be heavily Paragon.

And I'd probably burn that book. A bunch of weenies play these games.
