I'm in the middle of a trilogy replay at the moment, and my reintroduction to Mass Effect 2's emails has got me thinking.
What if, as a means of supplementing the regular dialogue trees, we had some kind of email exchange/instant messaging system? Essentially, take the emails from ME2, maybe pare them down a bit to better fit an instant, text-based communication format, and give us an array of potential responses along the lines of what we generally get out of the ordinary dialogue trees. It'd be a simple, cost-effective way to add more dialogue and character interaction to the game , as there'd be no need for voice or animation work.
To be absolutely clear, I am in no sense suggesting that this should supplant, or come at the expense of, the animated and voiced conversations we've come to expect from BioWare, and Mass Effect in particular. I love talking to characters - it's pretty much what drew me to RPGs in the first place - and the more of that sort of thing we get, the happier I'll be. This'd just be a means of adding even more character interaction and dialogue to the game than we might otherwise have had.
So... Whadda ya think, I guess?
