What if, now bear with me but what if.. The entire trilogy was an experiment to determine the limits of select individuals in varying ways. What if, the entire reaper invasion, geth war, Cerberus, everything we know about the trilogy was a vr like experience meant solely to test, train & prepare for what was coming. Andromeda.

What if the ark has been traveling to andromeda all this time, we all know just how vast the distance is and unless a deus ex machina happens with present trilogy technology it would take quite some time to reach. However, if an ark was present and was properly built well then time would be a menial factor. With the amount of time it'd take to reach and with the right means a virtual world state could be created to train select individuals throughout the journey. They'd be kept alive in a pseudo death like state that would slow down the decaying process of their bodies and in a sense grant them a pseudo immortality. With such vastly intelligent minds like those of the entire geth, mordin, illusive man, etc such a thing would be completely plausible. Hell shep was brought back to life AND cloned. They may not be the original bodies but seeing as how cloning and gene modification is a thing, it'd pan out.

What if the pathfinders were the crew of the sr-normandy, those that died would be deemed unable to accomplish the task at hand while those that made it to the end of the trilogy & stopped the reaper menace, became a pathfinder. This would be imo an acceptable way to give a nod to the trilogy while not out right dismissing it, it could be written off as technological space magic but think about it. It would work. What do you think? Would you like andromeda to be introduced in such a way? I would.

Demoting the events of the entire trilogy to a virtual reality training programme would not help anything, it would only make it worse.

Couldn't be worse then the fanbases reception to the me3 ending and in a way would explain why it was how was it was.

Yeah, that would create a storm of nerd-rage unlike any previously seen. We just thought the ME3 ending debacle was bad.

While not a big fan of this idea, I must say this was far more interesting and less infuriating than the other crap I've seen posted here.  And you did it without mentioning hogwash like romance options and the like.

If it was all a VR experiment, then I don't know why I'd need to cross millions of light years to live somewhere else. Sounds like overkill if the Reapers aren't real.

It would have been funny if it was fake though. Like I was just some Volus on the Citadel, playing "The Shepard" interactive novel.

I would prefer that the original trilogy actually happened.

well the reason could be as simple as, the milky way is no longer viable. In order to create such a world state in vr you'd need a base. All legend is based on truth and throughout the ages warped via retelling, ergo the reapers could be a manifestation of the threat the milky way was subjected to. A threat so sudden, powerful & all consuming escape was the only option. There are many ways this could tweaked to give a proper reason why the journey, none of which NEED to be the reapers. It could something to do with a galaxy wide disaster caused from natural causes.

Hahaha, that'd be hilarious. Citadel Gamestop, now taking pre-orders for "The Shepard: we'll bang ok?"

This would be even more hilarious than canonizing IT.

I appreciate the attempt at a massive plot twist but I do not think it would be received very well by anyone or would be needed.

If you actually did this it would literally be worse than the catalyst.

OT:

I've written a story along similar lines.

Shepard was a cerberus soldier who only thought he was commander shepard and that he was saving everyone, but he was helping the reapers. Every cerberus trooper believes he's commander shepard. I even had the Sur'kesh trooper muttering "We...we...." that was in the game, be one of the real shepards squadmates but he was fully under their control so only saw Cerberus.

He was actually a random guy inspired by Shepard to join Cerberus which made it easy to mess with his head.

In one interview, the devs asked us to be open minded about Andromeda. But this? It feels over-the-top.

Whaaaat? Do you even realize how terrible that sounds!? Everything Shepard did. Every squadmate they gained, every reaper they destroyed, every alliance they forged.  All those epic, unforgettable moments... You're really suggesting it should all just be pissed away as a virtual experiment? Nope. You aren't being serious here. This is a joke post. It just has to be. No one who has played through the trilogy, regardless on their opinion on the ending, would want to even suggest a thing like that.

LOL.  Shepard was just a bunch of 0001000101110000010000's inside the Matrix.

While true.  I must say I've heard worse ideas.

Heck I might even be able to work with this.

Maybe.

It'll never happen though.

Let's take it a step further.

The entire trilogy was a VR experiment to make intergalactic porn from a human perspective, mixed in with some plot elements to flesh it out.

well, is a daring idea, I dont know if people would appreciate as they want the all adventure to feels real, but it gives material to think about...well done and thank you for your post.

Still a better ending than mass effect 3.

This. It would in fact be kind of disrespectful to the whole trilogy.
