Presumably taking place during the tail end of Inquisition's campaign, and anytime during the two year timeskip until Trespasser.

There are way too many story hooks in the original game and the following DLC for it to be a coincidence. Especially stuff like Rainer's fate, if he were made to be a Grey Warden.

Were there originally plans for a DLC like that?

Not that I heard of. Also, Hawke can be left in the fade so it wouldn't be a Hawke DLC, it would be a "whoever went to Weisshaupt" DLC.

It seems that they are setting up a conflict within the Grey Wardens, but I don't think it was ever intended to be more than hinted at in Inquisition. I think that they were setting it up to play a part in the next game. Weisshaupt is very close to Tevinter, where it seems that we will probably be going next.

^That is how I always saw it, Weisshaupt is right on the border of Tevinter so it makes sense.

I also think if Hawke survives she/he might be made a Grey Warden by DA4, to tidy up the story threads a bit. (but that is pure speculation of course)

If so, it needs to end with Hawke walking away while Weisshaupt explodes in the background.

I don't think so, Weisshaupt and any future problems with the Wardens will probably be talked about/shown in the next game. Especially since their located close to Tevinter where the next DA game is likely to take place.

I was originally hoping for a weisshaupt DLC, but after the trespasser ending, I think that BW will leave this for the next game. As others said, the fortress is right up a the border with Tevinter, so it makes total sense for DA4 protagonist to go there. And there is a lot of subplots to be solved: The warden civil war, the return of the griffons, the cure of the calling (optional), the hunt for old gods. So it should make for a really big questline.

Side note: This is just me rambling, but doesn't this feel like the perfect set up for a protagonist reunion? I mean, the warden, if alive, could easily pop up at weisshaupt to give news about their journey regarding the calling, Hawke, if alive, is there too after the events of here lies the abyss, and possibly, even the Inquisitor might come along. Since a warden war would be a huge deal, the Inquisitor might want to come with you personally to help deal with the matter.

I still believe they were planning an Awakening style expansion covering Weisshaupt, but that for whatever reason it was cancelled - or more likely, they decided to fold it into DA 4.

As already noted, not only are there plenty of plot hooks pointing there within DA: I itself, but the 'Last Flight' novel is utterly incongruous without a game to lead into

Why does everyone assume Hawke is the most important person in the universe?

Considering Hawke was only one of FOUR characters who could go to Weissaupt (the others being Alistair, Loghain, and Stroud--yes, some people spare Stroud), if they did make a DLC it would be for "whomever went to Weissaupt," not "Hawke at Weissaupt."

I doubt they were ever going to make such a DLC in the first place. To me, it just looked like a sequel hook. A loose thread to be tied in a future game (probably next game), not a DLC for this one. Considering all the hints that something is going on with Grey Wardens and darkspawn off north and west and Weissaupt going quiet all of a sudden, that's bound to be for a future story.

It's more to do with how Hawke is the most screwed over character in the franchise, both in-universe and out.

DA2 could have been far better if EA hadn't tried to capitalise on Origins success by forcing Bioware to rush it out the door, then seeming to be surprised when the game did poorly as a result and deciding to cancel the planned Awakening-length expansion for it. Didn't help that Hawke's inclusion in Inquisition seemed slightly forced as a means to tie up loose ends with the character, let alone kicking the character further by giving us the callous option to leave them in the Fade.

I think the reason people want to see more of Hawke is because they think they deserved another chance to have a decent side adventure of their own, rather than remain the constant punching bag of the franchise?

As Varric once lampshaded, Hawke's the sort of walking weirdness magnet who cannot go to the beach without an armada of angry demon pirates showing up. Sending them to the headquarters of an Order who tend to deal with weirdness and disasters on a regular basis, probably would lead to some interesting shenanigans taking place.

Besides, for a non-Warden, Hawke seems to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon when it comes to potential connections to them.

Hawke has a sibling potentially in the Wardens, potentially fought in the Battle of Ostagar (if warrior/rogue), potentially is related to the Hero of Ferelden (if a human mage was the Warden), potentially met Nathaniel and potentially recovered some of Avernus' research for them. Canon connections that happen regardless of class/worldstate include, their father Malcolm Hawke being hired by Wardens to reinforce Corypheus' seals, Hawke being lured to the same prison decades later, having had Anders as a companion who was a rogue Warden, having encountered Wardens several times in Kirkwall, in addition to having made contact and begun working with the Warden-ally inbetween the events of DA2 and Inquisition.

As we can see, they have a history with Wardens that would make sending them to Weisshaupt make sense, even if only to answer questions regarding Anders, Corypheus or the events that transpired in Inquisition such as the Battle of Adamant?

Apart from it being obvious the story was set up for Hawke to be the Inquisitor, you mean?

If I took it literally, I'd track down that old piece of DA2 marketing that actually called Hawke the most important person in the history of Thedas (or something along those lines). ;)

I'm still trying to understand why on earth was Hawke suddenly involved in the affairs of the Wardens considering:

  1. He's not a Warden.
  2. His friend in the Wardens is just a colleague he met briefly (Stroud/Alistair in Act 2 of DA2).
  3. He has no formal ties with them. Not even after the Legacy DLC.

So why the hell would he travel as far as to Weisshaupt, anyway???

We4ll technically you can have the sibling join the wardens so you could headcaqnnon he/she is doing it for them. As for for me I tend to head cannon that Hawke does one or 2 other jobs for the wardens offscreen that we don't see. Tha ttends to be enough for me.

Despite all the hate Hawke gets, I have this odd feeling Hawke is actually one of the most beloved BW protagonists. So many players treat Hawke as their precious child and connect so strongly with Hawke's character and story. I for one consider Hawke my second favourite BW protagonist ever (with the Warden and Shepard being on a tie in first place).

There is just something about this character, that tries and tries and then fails, and yet aways keep pushing foward not mattering how many times they get knocked down. A bittersweet broken hero (or anti-hero), I would say.
