Despite all the hate Hawke gets, I have this odd feeling Hawke is actually one of the most beloved BW protagonists. So many players treat Hawke as their precious child and connect so strongly with Hawke's character and story. I for one consider Hawke my second favourite BW protagonist ever (with the Warden and Shepard being on a tie in first place).

There is just something about this character, that tries and tries and then fails, and yet aways keep pushing foward not mattering how many times they get knocked down. A bittersweet broken hero (or anti-hero), I would say.

Yeah, a lot of people (myself included obviously) have a major soft spot for the character. Probably because with all their flaws, foibles and failures, Hawke comes across as the most realistic and "human" protagonist in the series. Someone who's not actively seeking to change the world, but wants to instead make their small section of it better and somewhere they can live in.

Varric actually says something similar to that effect in Inquisition. That in his mind, the best heroes are ones who can fail or even die, but never give up trying despite all the setbacks (such as Hawke), whereas invincible boring heroes (such as the Warden or Inquisitor) that tend to win all the time, simply aren't as compelling to hear about.
