First and foremost, I REALLY love it when a game, A GAME, messes with me brain and heart this effectively! Cheers to the peeps at Bioware, ya dirty ($#&$(#*&$  -- hehe.

Ok, so yeah, DID NOT see the Blackwall thing coming at all. Im still wrapping up my first play through, BTW, but yeah. So I have an appointment with a therapist in Thedas now, to you know, process all the feelers. LMAO

Of all three games, the most intense connections with toons (which is a reason for therapy, in and of itself), was my romantic connection with Morrigan during the last game and my male bro bonding with Blackwell. So it REALLY caught me off guard. Plus, all this happened five Black Butte porters into a gaming session one night. The whole thing was so surreal.

When all was said and done, I brought him back to fight alongside me because ALL THAT EPIC GEAR he was wearing. LOL Ok, fine, I was a softy and felt the need to be loyal. I wish they had more dialogue options once he's back amongst the old gang. And also, specific reactions from Varric and Cass, his other running buddies. But nada.

Its kind of like a bad marriage, right, where NO ONE talks about the elephant in the room. Thats the only oversight, just my view, from a dev standpoint. But yeah, really dig on it when games mess with me like this.

The connection with Morrigan very much connected with the type of woman I attract to in real life. Well, minus the whole creepy swap/forrest, freaky mentor part. I loved her edge, her accent, her look, her dyed hair. So that toon, I get the connection. It bubbles over to my own complicated, contradictory life. I mean, I thought the movie Inside Out was epic, real, amazing but I also love The Secretary, which was massively controversial. Personally, I thought it was a great love story about brokenness and acceptance.

But my strong reaction to Blackwall. Yeah, didnt see that one coming.

Saw Blackwall coming a mile away. Solas too. But Blackwall tipped his hand in Vallamar with his uncertain response. Then he was talking big of the Wardens, and he sounded like some eager new recruit who didn't know the horrors of the Warden life. Then he said he was in Ferelden during the 5th Blight, which I knew was false as a player of Origins. But even my Inquisitor suspected after the Winter Palace where he was almost recognized. Then how he suddenly heard the Calling when he found out about it from Stroud. And the letter in Leliana's rookery from the real Blackwall.

Not sure if you played DAO, Karook, but it was clear something was up with Blackwall when he said he was fighting darkspawn in Ferelden during the Blight. All but two of the Ferelden Wardens were massacred early in DAO, so it was impossible for Blackwall to be present.

Plus, he was as shifty AF.

Yeah, I did, but I never took that battle to mean everyone was there for my toon to have access to. I guess I didnt clue into (interpret) shifty as much as I did, he was emotionally broken and lost. Even at the very end, his remorse was very genuine and he clearly wanted me to sentence him to death or let the Orlessians off him. Not the actions of a true hoodlum, in my view. But thats what makes this game so fun, a range of experiences, depending upon who is playing it.

I knew he was lying about something, but wasn't sure what. If I remember correctly, I thought he might he be covering up his pre-Warden past. I never considered he wasn't a real Warden though.

I think I got the vibe he had done something terrible, that he regretted, but did not see the Warden's angle.

I actually thought he was badly written at first. But when the revelations came, it all fell into place.
Concerning the responses of other companions, I believe Solas says something about his deceit. He comes back on his "you and I have seen war" talk they had at the beginning. Dunno about the others for certain.

I brought blackwall with me everywhere on my first play through. I didn't see the surprise coming, either. That guy is a beast so of course I brought him back with me lol but then I gave him to the wardens for his crimes.

I didn't see it coming in my first playthrough.

I wasn't concerned about his responses about the missing Wardens because it was a unique case. Maybe he was a lone Warden out in the middle of no where while training recruits. If I was him, and some random person came up to me with the last Blight tens years in the past, I would ask the person WTH you are talking about?

When he was asked how to kill an Archdemon, and his response was about sticking as many swords in it as possible. I took it with a grain of salt since I didn't know how many Wardens knew that the souls clashed when the Archdemon was killed by a Warden and ta da, it's over.

With the banter about sensing the Darkspawn in the dwarven outpost (in Hinterlands), I wasn't really acknowledging what was being said but looking back, I should have known something.

So by the time he was imprisoned, I was VERY surprised and he was a long time friend, Party member, and ally. I felt like he was leading a life of atonement and genuinely was trying to be his best even trying his best as to live through Blackwall. He could have chose any name but he chose the person who believed in him.

I am not defending his past but it's not like he was proud of it. Comparing his mistake to our world, yeah, sure.. f'ING horrible. No way around it. In Thedas, it's not the first time..I'm sure of it.. plus in it's day and age, life isn't easy. With politics leading to death in Thedas more times than I can count, there will be collateral damage (intentional or otherwise).

For me, he will be free and live as Thom..
He will continue to do good like what was shown in the DLC epilogue.

My god, I got chills the first time I found out. I miss DAI. I need to play it again.

I guessed his secret after three incidents:

1. When we found "his" badge - he was acting like it wasn't his (which of course it wasn't) and that got me really suspicious.

2. I had flirted a lot with him, but he kept saying over and over that we shouldn't be involved (not conclusive evidence though as several LI say similar things both in DA:I and DA2 without anything major happening)... for the record I romanced Solas instead to avoid heartbreak. *facepalm*

3. The conclusive evidence came in Valhammer when he couldn't say if and how many darkspawn were present... I yelled "FRAUD!" at the TV in response.  <_<

I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I found it interesting that what Blackwall did is identical to what Sten did, even down to seeking atonement by fighting darkspawn (sort of). The only difference is that Blackwall lied about his crimes and tried to run from them, whereas Sten was truthful and upfront about his.

He does.
If you keep both in your party after the revelation, Solas comments on it and is a complete arsehole about it, as he goes on and on about Blackwall being a horrible deciver and *not like Solas at all*.  (Seriously, he says something like "We thought we were alike, but you faked it so you don't deserve my sympathy).

The irony.

Maker's breath! Just leave the wannabe in prison and go romance Cullen. Well Bull too but he might leave you too. At least Cullen will marry you.

But Blackwall is much hotter than Cullen!*

This also doesn't work if you're playing a qunari or dwarf. (You already noted that Bull was an option, of course, but that might turn out a lot worse depending on your character's choices.) I'd say that Sera or Josie are better choices for relatively angst-free romance in those cases.

*Opinion is subjective. Millage (and hotness) my vary.

Don't worry, I am not easily offended.

A friend of mine did notice an interesting "bug" regarding the Blackwall romance - she was romancing him but after everything she found out in "Revelations" she felt very betrayed and wanted to break up with him. However, the game does not allow you to break up with him if you leave him in prison. Thus, my friend was forced to bust him out to be able to end the romance. She was quite upset about it as she felt he deserved to be executed for what he did, but she didn't want to be unable to romance anyone else because of him. I wonder if this was intentional or not?

Could be the case it was intended. But I wouldn't know. I've not romanced Blackwall and wasn't planning to. Though, perhaps I might give him a go now that I've found this awesome mod that gives him a bath and a shave. And if I can get over this paternal image I have of him.

But maybe it's like with Solas. How you can't move on to anyone else if he is the one to end it. Or so I've heard. Never had any interest in moving on.

I did, and I noticed it, and I was irritated in the moment that he would say that. To be honest, I just took that as the devs doing a retcon of sorts. It's not like that never happens.

Of course, he could have been, just as he said. I thought it was plausible when I played it the first time.

Exactly. It could be one of the few times pre-Revelations where he gives an honest answer. Oh, the irony! We know from the letter that the real Blackwall was stuck at the Orlesian border, unable to get in to Ferelden thanks to Loghain. But Rainier? He very well could have been in Ferelden during the Blight. Why he would be I have no idea, since wasn't he in the Orlesian army at that time? Or maybe he hadn't joined up yet?
