This seems to be the only decent offensive option for staves, but it would be way too much of a liability if it was affected by friendly fire.
Is Chain Lightning from Fade-Touched materials affected by friendly fire?

Only decent offensive option? What about:
Hidden Blades (x3, x4, x5)
Immolate
Shield Bash (pretty hilarious on a staff, but it works)
Personally I prefer Veilstrike, but I figure that's a problem for FF. IMO, FF is poorly implemented and there are much better ways to increase the challenge of Nightmare. Like Trials. So my advice is, turn it off and go wild with Chain Lightning or whatever.
BTW, Fade-Touched Masterworks aren't "on" the gear you craft them into. They are "on" the character equipping the gear. So doesn't matter what you put where. You can put Shield Bash on armor and "Heal 20% of damage taken over 10 seconds" on an off-hand dagger. They both end up on the character rather than the gear.

I have one of Blackwall's weapons with Chain Lightning, and I play with friendly fire on. His chain lightning does not hit party members.
I don't know if this would be different with a mage however. I notice that the spell effects placed on mage items cause the mage to actually cast the spell.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I just got to Skyhold and I'm trying to make a set of mid-game gear. You can farm fade-touched metal much easier than leather or cloth, and I don't want to sink too much time into this.
I might turn off Friendly Fire, as it does seem to just remove certain strategies without adding much. I am running a 1 Warrior / 3 Mage party, so I can afford to try and play around it more than most party compositions, but it's pretty annoying.
