Maybe there was back when we could change weapons during battle, but now I don't see it.

No there isn't really. That has been the case since Dragon Age 2. You can respec as many times as you want but you can't even 'master' both ability trees since there aren't that many skill points available to do it unless you ignore secondary trees.

It's a complete and utter pain in the you know what to go every time to the inventory and change your wep so obviously you're much better off if you just spec in a single fighting style, as it is intended. Maybe spending points in one weapon set should lock the other one?

I'd go further and say there is a strong disincentive to splitting points between melee and ranged for rogues, particularly for early to mid game. Every point you put into a melee active that you don't use for a particular quest playing an archer is just wasted.

That said, in certain late stage builds, there's value in spending a few points in various trees for buffs that apply across all weapon types. Like Flow of Battle (2H) for W&S warrior, or more relevant to rogues, Dance of Death or Sneak Attack for an archer that's hard up for critical hits, Pincushion for a DW rogue for Throwing Blades. Any actives you have to buy on the way there are just the cost of doing business.

There wasn't a point in doing this in DA:O, either. But then there wasn't really a point to playing anything other than a mage.

Aside from Awakening, where archery is better than melee as opposed to the other way around a la vanilla DAO where it's crap, there's never been much point in it.

Of course there is, especially if you are playing a solo rogue. You can drop into stealth and then bring up the inventory and the skills menu.

The point is to have diversity in your fighting abilities. To have a wide range of different attacks. Though, some dagger skills aren't really worth it in the long run.

On a side note, I had Cole mostly dagger, but some archery. This helped when fighting certain dragons, and also the Hakkonites. I also had Blackwall split between W&S and 2H, but mostly W&S.

Sadly true. I wish Rogues were like... DmC or something.

Fantasy wise, LotR fits the bill.

No, there isn't. I just buy a crap ton of tactical renewal and reset my points when I feel like switching. I have a knack for respeccing a lot.

Aside from gameplay mechanics, it just makes sense to me.

A smart archer would learn some melee skills so that s/he won't be defenseless when an enemy gets close.
