I would like to suggest a heavy duty armor, copying from nature, like insects do when they have to defend themselves.

In case of tough situations or a big explosion, or even a big fall from a Cliff. The character could activate this armor that transforms itself into a cocoon that can be a lifesaver...

The armor becames a cocoon still with the ability to move the character: This would give the opportunity to adopt tactical moves like to go deeper into the enemy lines...

Also this idea would give the character a mysterious and alien feeling...

What do you think?

We are going to explore in Andromeda and heavy armor sounds useless to me. Our armor should be light, flexible & tough at the same time for both exploration purpose and combat scenarios. The armor that BioWare showed us looks about right.

I'm all for a return of the insect people.

But that idea was stoopid.

I really like the general aesthetic of the new armor. There are a couple of things I hope they tidy up, but it looks cool for a futuristic space explorer.

I do wish someone at these companies would bring in an expert when designing armor. They out so much effort into so many small details, but then just go with whatever "looks cool" for armor. Bringing in an expert would give them a functional base from which to start. Maybe they did that here, and just added fiddly bits in s couple of places. Who can say? In either case, it looks cool, but could be even better.

That doesn't sound Mass Effect-y at all.

Ah yes, fond memories of making Ankheg armiour in Baldurs Gate.  That acid spitting Ankheg was a real beotch to fight.

If they are going back to different classes of armour, I would rather them just stick to the standard Heavy, Medium, and Light.

Some sort of activated ability to protect yourself from blasts sounds like more of a class ability than an armour ability.

Wouldn't that be a bit similar to Collector armour?

Spoiler

Doesn't look light at all.

I hope they bring back the armor types like in ME1. I don't want to look like a tank when I'm an adept or engineer.

I'm not a big fan of the nomex-looking Light Armor suits from ME1. They just didn't look like they'd be up to the challenge, in my opinion.

ThIs looks like those suits with some armor plating added. It sounds like they could be going for a modular armor plating system, but there's more than a bit of speculation in my saying that. If that were the case, we might each be able to customize that explorer's suit to our preference. That would be pretty sweet. Imagine the variety between your various characters.

EDIT: iPad's damned autocorrect keeps changing my words!

Reading the title of your thread, I was thinking something more along the lines of a car's airbag: an emergency one-off defense against critical damage.

Ankeg Armor wasn't really any different than any other magical "heavy" armor.

Unlike what OP is suggesting, which WOULD BE RIDICULOUS!

Light in the sense of weight. Extra fittings on front and back is making it look bulky and I think that's the customizable part as tallrickrush said. Without those it looks like this.

Funny if we go further and remove plating & stuff as our armor should also serve for combat like light type armors from ME1 so no to those.

I agree. That armor kinda reminded of Nanosuit from Crysis, not much though. Just similar bits here & there, the elbow part especially.
