I would like and suggest to have missions where there is not combat at all, just to add variety and deepener to  gameplay presented till now.

Here just one example, but I would like to hear other ideas:

A mission where there is a long tunnel to go through, I mean very long and narrow tunnel,  where the teamates have to walk in a line...a monotonous tunnel where teamates express their increasingly discomfort, till everyone is going to loses it....a sort of psychological strain mirrored by the frustration of the player that has to endure in this tunnel....I'm talking about 20 or more minutes of long walk with no clue on how long it will be or if there is an end to it.

The dialogue  has to be masterfully crafted to create a growing tension...

Here the gameplay is reduced to a minumum but all is happening in the head of the player which I think is the core art of creating a wonderful game, make it happen less on the screen and more inside the head of the player..

What do you think?

Cheers!

Sounds like Snake's encounter with The Sorrow in "MGS 3: Snake Eater". It would have to be a hell of a lot shorter than 20 minutes.

I like to have non-combat missions every now and then (not too many). E.g. I did like Thane's and Samara's LMs in ME2, the few non-combat side quests (like the damaged VI on that space station) or the non-combat Hammerhead parts, they were good for variety. But they should be kept sprinkled into the game rather rarely. I expect with bigger worlds and lot's of exploration, we'll have a lot more driving to do anyway. There could also be other nice non-combat activities like evading environmental hazards on uncharted worlds (with new movement skills, like the jetpack), etc.

I am also all for alternive ways to solve situations in quests, combat, diplomacy or maybe even adventure like puzzles every now and then.

The OP's idea with the tunnel, I don't think that will work out well. The dialogue would have to be REALLY well done and even then, 20 minutes seems a bit much. I could see an optional labyrinth kinda level but even that can very quickly become really annoying as well, so it would have to be designed with lots and lots of care.

I can appreciate a less combat oriented mission or better yet, a mission with options for both combat and non combat.

However this would just be boring as hell, which is counter productive to what video games are trying to do which is entertain us.

Something like the beginning of Half-Life 2 would be pretty good.

Ignore this: I missed the message of the original post. I saw 'non combat missions' in Mr Fob's reply and instantly thought Half-Life 2.

Mission without combat for a change of pace?  Sure.  Twenty minutes in a cave walking in a straight line?  No.

If I would want to play a game in my mind, I can just sit in a corner and do that. Or do like sylvius does and headcanon everything. So, no I don't think it is a good idea.

But keep up the creating of threads, at some point you may have a good idea.

Are you serious? You could have way better ideas than the stuff you're discussing. I have to agree with all the other people. This is kind of ridiculous. No offense Raul but keep your thoughts in your mind.

I've always loved the level design of BioWare games <3 I think having just a tunnel would be a bit of a waste??? Good idea though. :) x

I don't think is a bad idea, but I would need more things to spice this up.

For example:

We are running out of oxygen.

We have a countdown because of that.

We heard creatures in that tunnel. But is more like a maze than a tunnel (multiple crossroads, etc.)

Our squadmates start to argue against each other and YOU.

Allucinations for the lack of oxygen.

Something like that.

I don't like the idea of the squadmates expressing frustration. That would actually undermine what you say you want, which is gameplay inside the player's mind.

But beyond that I like the idea. In ME1 I did the Ilos trench run on foot, and if you just run the straight section withiut stopping it takes 8 minutes. That's valuable just for the sense of scale it offers; I was disappointed the Deep Roads in DAO didn't have something similar.

They did a no combat mission in Legion's Tron mission in ME3. They've also done sidequests in the past that don't require combat (e.g. the ME1 Colonist mission, "I Remember Me").

Hey, it's only 20 minutes if you went on a killing spree...in a stealth game. lol

Indeed. The ball at Halamshiral in Inquisition is another example, to some extent at least--it did have combat, but it was a minor part of the overall experience, relatively speaking. You spent most of your time talking, did a little dancing, and generally engaged in courtly intrigue. Unmasking - so to speak - the duchess at the end, in a grand, mocking speech before the entire Orlesian court, remains my favourite thing in that game. (Made that much sweeter by my playing an elf who looks like this:)

Spoiler

Suffice to say, I'd absolutely love to see more of that sort of thing going forward; I mainly play these games for the talking.

I was going to mention something similar. This person wants Kojima. Not Bioware.

If the game is a bit like Skyrim, where there is a sense of "journey" then I wouldn't mind "extreme" environmental situations, so long as the narrative of the game provides context for it, it would represent the challenges of the environment to the player, and time equal distance. Day Z, the mod,( the standalone is still broken), had a similar feel of journey, the time it took to go "deep" into the map and the challenges of the journey contributed to the sense of threat and unease, and being able to go deep into the map felt like an accomplishment.

I wouldn't mind "survival" elements happening while down planet or "deep" into the map. Every so often I happen to harp on about 2007s "The Mist" as a representation of an extremely challenging environment. If ME:A had environments down planet or "deep" that felt like that, I would, well, recognize what they were going for I guess.

So I get what this thread is trying to discuss. Themed challenging environments, because if there was a weirdly long tunnel in Skyrim, there would be youtube videos about it etc.

I play these games for the parts that are neither talking nor combat. Puzzles, exploration, crafting, inventory management, character creation, reading the rules. Those are my favourite parts of these games.

It would be cool to have a boss fight, where you have to use your charm or lack their of, to complete the mission.  Similar to convincing Saren to shoot himself or not.
