While I can see the appeal of having the option to be a different species/race, I prefer playing as human.
I like to roleplay as if it were "me" in that world/setting, and since I am a human, it makes sense to play as a human.
That said, I don't see how having multiple races in "Dragon Age: Tevinter" would work. We know next to nothing about dwarves in Tevinter, and the BIGGEST plot point is ELVES, so playing as an elf would either be very interesting, or totally bonkers.
-------------
One idea that could be to have, say, three pre-defined characters (hold your horses, let me finish) and you have to select one. I know that takes away from the customization, but here's the thing, they aren't YOUR character.
So you have a Human Male Magister, a Qunari Female Prisoner, and a Dwarven Male Merchant.
The setting is a small town in Tevinter, when suddenly an elf uprising occurs (Solas). The three are caught in the chaos and have to work together to get to safety.
Depending on who you've selected to play as, your options are different:
As the Magister, you can try to use your status to secure a faster evacuation. (reputation bonus)
As the Prisoner, you can use the chaos to your advantage to loot the place. (more crafting resources)
As the Merchant, you can use your "Plan B" hideout to wait out these unfortunate events. (better starting equipment)
As you make your way to whatever you decide...
Suddenly a building collapses, and the one you select is caught in the rubble.
Cut off from the others, you have to make your way out of the collapsed structure, when you run into...
*CHARACTER CREATION SCREEN*
The above is a VERY rough draft, and I don't know how well it would work, but the idea is that it would enable the "Origins" to be there, but for your companions instead of the player character.
Again, I know it's a bit out of left field, but it would allow the player character to be more "pre-defined" without sacrificing too much of the customization we know and love/agonize over.
-------------
Look at Shepard, he/she is a preset race (human) and some preset backstory (N7, Alliance Military, has a well-known event that colors their history), and yet the customization goes from here to the Charon Relay in regards to class, appearance, morality, and their relationship with the other characters.
I'm not saying we get a "Lord Shepard of Norman'Dai Keep" (even though that would be all kinds of awesome), but we need to realize that we can't have it both ways. If we want a "richer, more nuanced character", we have to accept some "hardlines" in our character (be it pre-defined race, a singular prologue, etc.). But if we want a "free-form, whatever-we-like character", then we don't have any right to complain about bland writing, since with free-form, it's up to YOU, the player, to create your own writing, and there's only so much a writer can do before the character becomes "preset" and not "customizable".
Put simply, I feel a single "origin" of sorts would work better, since a writer doesn't have to accomodate EVERY POSSIBLE PERMUTATION, and the majority of your character is made by playing the story/game, not just the character creation screen. The choices you make, the dialogue you choose, who you talk to, what you talk about.
An "origin" is just that, an "origin". It's a beginning, and while it has bearing on the middle and the end, it's not the end in and of itself.
That's a lot of quotation marks, so apologies if you don't like that sort of thing.

I know it would be hard for a Qunari protagonist to make sense, but Tevinter is also the only place where it would actually matter. People in the south just think you look weird.

- a runaway slave, potentially even one of Danarius' lyrium infused creations, because after Fenris escaped why not make more? So, after hearing one of your "brothers" escaped, you did too - and have been running ever since. Until you're recruited/gain magical abilities/whatever happens to DA4's hero. If the character has the lyrium stuff, they could get a special specialization or something as they learn to control their abilities.
- a magister's personal bodyguard, who, when your home is attacked in a slave riot or an attack by the Qun, your employer is killed and you're forced to flee with the magister's family. You fend off the attackers, barely keeping the family alive.
- the youngest child of a dwarf merchant, who's spent your entire life in your older brother's shadow. You've always wanted more, while your brother is perfect in your parent's eyes, even though he's far from it. You've always had warrior/rogue training - you're strong, smart, and just as good as your brother... And you're given a chance to prove it.
- a young member of the Qun who discovers you have a half sibling, a Tal-Vashot (which I'm probably spelling terribly). You decide to buck tradition and go to find them. You find that they've joined the other side of the war, get to know them and realize that you've never felt like you had a real family with the Qun... But in a skirmish, they're killed by loyal Qunari. You manage to make your way to your sibling in the fray, hold them as they're dying, and they make you promise to avenge them.
- a rogue only origin: an Inqusition member who is staying at a Tevinter estate, spying on the owner. You end up getting caught, and you're attacked in your sleep, but manage to escape dying. You have information you need to get back to the Inquisition, and you manage to get a message to them, escaping the estate and heading to wherever you're supposed to go to get picked up. Of course, your savior is whoever recruits you.
- a mage only origin: a magister's apprentice who, previously a slave, was discovered as having magic powers. You're going to go through some trial to prove your worth to the magister, and end up passing with flying colors... But you quickly learn, after a wonderful dinner, night in your new quarters, and a tour of the estate, that your mentor is possessed by a demon who wants to possess you instead.
- a warrior only origin: a fog warrior who's sent to attack a Qunari squad (or Imperium squad of course) and ends up saving your group from the squad you were sent to attack. Before you can get away, though, an agent of the hero group shows up to help out. You end up joining them since you feel you owe them your life, or because you think they're a wonderful fighter, whatever.
