So we know that in the trilogy, you had the choice between Colonist, Spacer, or lived on earth. Then there was Lone Survivor, Ruthless, and War Hero and each of these had a small impact on the story. If it does make a return, I hope it can make a much larger difference than it did in the previous games because as it was, being "The Butcher of Torfan" only got one guy to say "OH NO! I KNOW YOU!!! IT'S *gasp* THE BUTCHER OF TORFAN!?!?!" Instead of that, I would want entire cities afraid of me because they know what would happen if my crosshairs turned towards them.

Mine wouldn't need a backstory, but a poem. Something scary, that would make even the most hardcore villains afraid of it.

Why would entire cities be afraid of Shepard because of what happened on Torfan?

Torfan was not the result of a one-man army composed of Shepard; it was the result of sacrificing the lives of many members of Shepard's own unit to pursue and kill criminals on the small moon including those that surrendered. The Alliance took heavy losses.

I support this. :) I like characters to have backstories which influence who they are. The feeling I got from the ME trilogy was that different backstories produced the same person and that wasn't good :/ Love the games though! x

I feel like if he is so ruthless that he essentially put the mission before all else, so if that's true, and he sacrificed all of his criminals, if he has a mission to said city bringing in someone by any means necessary, i'm sure he wouldn't care about any collateral damage, lives and property alike.

I like the idea of having backstories again, although I don't really think they need to make it so entire cities are scared because "not Shep" is a renegade style character.

Worried about collateral damage maybe, but not the entire city actively scared of you.

I would much rather have our backstories be ambiguous.

I would like some backstory.  I have a feeling, there will be more room for players own head canon though

I really like an interesting background. However, I hope that interesting background doesn't imply the main character is special. I would like to see the PC starting from zero, being one more among her/his kind.

I want more interesting options. I don't have any further ideas but I'd like to hear some.

I don't have any ideas of my own as to what would make a good background story for the protagonist of Andromeda, not really knowing the given context or time in which the game is set, but I would like the background stuff back for Andromeda. Them having a bigger impact than the original trilogies would be appreciated too, but not so much more that it becomes a huge influence in how the entire game plays out.

I liked the backgrounds, especially when they were brought up in like conversations or just affected the story in different ways.

Depending on the moment they leave to Andromeda, they can use:

Pre-Reaper War

-Colonist (family abducted by the Collectors: her/his spouse, children, etc.)

-Former Duct-Rat (born in the Citadel, no parents, survived his/her childhood as duct-rat, now she/he is a petty criminal (as Mouse, from Thane's Loyalty Mission)

-Spacer (was a participant in the Battle of the Citadel against Sovereign)

In-Reaper War

-Earth: the PC was part of the resistance on earth against the Reapers (problem: how they leave Earth??)

-Citadel: the PC was part of the resistance on the Citadel against Cerberus coup)

-Alien world: maybe the PC was a merchant, a politician or a bodyguard of a diplomat on an alien world when the Reaper War begins, so maybe he/she spent the fight on Palaven, or on Thessia, or on any world less famous...

Post Reaper War

I ran out of ideas XD

^^^^^^^

I like your creativity, but I have a feeling we're going to be descendants of those who left the Milky Way for Andromeda.  I'm almost certain you don't need to think of post-Reaper options because the whole Andromeda soft reboot is a way to not have to deal with the players' final choice in ME3.

Thanks

In the case we are descendant of those who left Milky Way and we are born in the Ark almost arriving to Andromeda, maybe we are entering in a Vault territory narrative (Fall Out 3, Vault 101 style?). Maybe our background depends of our class specialization, or our work in the Ark (if we are security, scientist, politician, criminal). I would like to see in that case some vibes of Battlestar Galactica

Or maybe, depending of what decision we make at the end of the game, we are making our own background-fame story for the next game.

Imagine if in the original series, say that if you chose the spacer background. What if your mothers ship was being raided by batarians or something and you had a mission to go save them. That's kind of the depth I hope for in Andromeda.

I agree. I'd also like them to be playable. In my opinion, it's far more compelling to play a background story as opposed to

reading about it in a codex entry.

They should also add in an option for a vague background for those interested to keep all parties happy.

Protagonist background is a good thing per se, but - what about other squadmates? IMO they should have their own background stories as well.

I'd would think in terms of background it would seem we're likely all to be Spacers...I guess depending on length of time to Andromeda.  Maybe the background could be raised by parents who fulfilled differing roles on the ship.  Scientists, farmers, soldiers, etc...

Psychological makeup... I'd like a family "man" (complete with a significant other and kid) option - the human supremacist - the tried and true ruthless - and to counterbalance that, give me a peacemaker option.

It's fun to contemplate, but it only matters if Bioware makes those little tidbits meaningful in dialogue and gameplay throughout the game.  I found DAI frustrating most of the time playing anything other than a human noble since 99% of conversations are identical and the 1% you get assumes you loved you're old life/people.  Try playing a Dalish in line with Sera's way of thinking.

I love origin stories, especially if they're playable. I don't need it to be anything as dramatic as the OP suggested, but involving the background in the play through would mean a lot to me.
