but does crushing the locals and ruling over them with an iron fist really make me the bad guy here?
It would depend on who tell the story ñ_ñ

Haha Gandalf with a sniper! I love it xxx
I doubt Bioware would do that, most of people prefer playing heroes anyways (if you trust charts on how many played Paragons compared to Renegades at least), but I hope we have chances to be really bad in our colonization attempt. I missed playing as more evil character in DAI although I don't like being right down evil when playing either.
Any sort of conflict would be so mind boggling retarded and would be another example of Bioware making a galaxy seem small. Do you know how big a galaxy is? Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is 100 000 light years(1 000 000 000 000 000 000km) across and houses at least 100 billion planets, and Andromeda is double the size. The chance of you stepping on the toes of another species in Andromeda, a galaxy without mass relays mind you, is so damn low, there's more than enough room for everyone.
Of course for drama's sake we're going to run into issues with the natives even though it makes no damn sense to.

Is this really something most folks really should care about? I mean, we all grew up with Star Trek and Star Wars, two galaxy-spanning settings where you can trip on a rock and land on someone's civilization. But really, the realities of space travel to this extent make for a shite setup for an action shooter space opera.

It's always been my pet peeve with Sci fi tbh, even though I like those series overall, its just the most annoying trope, many (not all) sci fi writers don't seem to understand just how vast space is. Nearly all the drama and other nonsense you see happen in these franchises would never happen in real in life, but these series aren't meant to mimic real life, they're entertainment, so we just gotta roll with it I guess.
It does get a bit laughable when sci fi writers expect you to take some of their hilariously unrealistic storylines ultra seriously though lol, which is why I'm hoping that Bioware avoid the obvious trap of getting overly preachy about imperialism.
depends on what kind of person you are. If you're a sadistic fascist dictating mother****** than yes. If you are morally good and not a psychopath then hell no. Ruling over the natives with an iron fist is more suited to less advanced societies. For the milky way races you see cooperation instead of conquer. If you want to learn more about colonialism and crazy stuff read the wretched of the earth by Frantz Fanon.but does crushing the locals and ruling over them with an iron fist really make me the bad guy here?
We should have KotOR dark-side level evil as an option.
Would this be the speech they give before the final battle?
