Pretty sure I know the answer to this, but is there a way to complete it without making Jacob loyal? I want to do it, but I also want Jacob to die in the suicide mission. The only way I think to do that is to send him through the vents if he's loyal, but I want to send Tali.

No, you can't complete his mission without making him loyal. If you don't want to send him through the vents, you can always get Seeker Swarm to carry him away.

He will be loyal no matter the decision you make at the end of the mission. He can still die by being taken away by Seeker Swarms, but I don't know how to make the game choose him. Maybe it may be by the selection order in which you select him. I'd start with that, but if he doesn't die, you're going to have to restart that section again or replay the collector base.

You need someone lower on "to be carried away by the Swarm" list. Like Zaeed.

No, he needs to be in your active party with someone lower on the list to be carried away. Loyal Jack and loyal Samara will not collapse, so you either need either another biotic from you team to do it or have one of them unloyal. I got him taken away with Miranda doing a bubble and Zaeed as second squad member.

Ditto. I knew he was negative, but really grew to dislike him in my "Shepard just can't find love" play through where she romanced Kaidan, got the Horizon treatment, went for Jacob, Kaidan gets shot by Garrus, and Jacob cheats on the galaxy's only hope. I hated his attitude. He's one of those characters who I had to tip-toe around his dialogue (reminds me of Morrigan from Dragon Age). On one slip up he has a line like, "It's a good thing you earned a lot of cred, because you cashed in a lot on that." Don't blame you for pre meditating his death.

I feel like I'm saving Brynn from him. Maybe mostly because she's the voice of my Hawke, whom I love and who deserves better. Wasn't Jacob supposed to be some super awesome romance option?

As others have pointed out, Jacob can die -- even if loyal -- during the Long Walk (biotic bubble) segment.

 

Have Thane hold the bubble, and then bring Miranda and Jacob as your two squadmates to guarantee that you kill Jacob.

 

 

Mass Effect 2's Suicide Mission Guide - *Everything* about the final mission. According to this thread, as long as you have Miranda or Thane generating the biotic bubble, you can bring Jacob along to die as long as the second squadmate is one of:

• Mordin
• Tali
• Kasumi
• Zaeed
• Morinth
• Miranda (if not holding the bubble)

Yep that'll work a treat.

I just had Thane do the bubble and a loyal Grunt was taken by the swarm.  Didn't expect that.  So I swapped him for Jacob, an unloyal Jacob though, and off he went into the distance to be devoured by bugs. 

 

Having Thane do the bubble is a nifty way to get rid of someone, as long as you look at the list on the suicide mission image to see the order in which they die.  Although why on earth Shep would pick an ill Drell to do the bubble...that took some metagaming.

The easiest way to make him die is to send him in the vents at the very beginning of the Suicide Mission (no matter who you choose to be the squad leader, Jacob will die anyway).

If you want him to be caught by the Seeker Swarm, you must bring him and another squad member (Mordin, Tali, Kasumi, Zaeed, Morinth, Miranda) and put a non loyal Samara/Jack for the bubble or Thane/Miranda.

Making him hold the line alone (that must be funny) can be difficult and you must kill most of your team before that.

I've left Samara and Miranda alone before with both not surviving. I've may of left some else alone. I just don't recall who it was. I know I've left Garrus, Grunt and Zaeed by themselves with them surviving.

Yup, but now Mike suggested it I really want to try it out. 

Suggestion? Ok.

 

For the purpose of this suggestion I will have all 8 loyal. Miranda will survive no matter what. So will the other squadmate that goes with her to fight the reaper. The third squadmate who is sent to escort the crew back will survive.

 

I will not recruit Tali, Thane, Samara and Legion

 

Do not get the cannon upgrade

 

Garrus dies with no cannon upgrade

have Jadk be fireteam leader. hahahahaha

kasumi sent in the vent - dead

send Mordin back with the crew

Zaeed 2nd fireteam leader - dead

send Jacob with Zaeed

have Miranda do barrier with Grunt and Jack at Shepard's side. Jack will be taken by the swarm

Jacob stays to hold the line by himself - dead

Miranda and Grunt survive fighting the reaper.

 

Of course the above can be done differently. Its only a suggestion

That's what made it good. Your Shepards hatred runs so deep he's willing to sacrifice most of the squad just to kill Jacob in a way that will make him feel isolated and alone.

Shepard: OK everyone else get back to the Normandy, Jacob you got this?

 

Jacob: I got your back Shepard and I'll be by your side till the end.

 

Shepard: Good. I need you to wait here, cover me while we, make our escape.......I'll be back for you.
