Ranks in groups are defined by the leader, or anyone to whom the leader has granted administrative privileges (which can be checked on or off for each individual group or member setting.)
The ranks don't automatically offer anything specific, and thus require time to go through and arrange them so that the privileges are correctly set up. There can be many of them, with different privileges.
A common setup, if you're looking to have a "private" group, would be to have 5-6 ranks that look something like this:
Default: This applies to literally every member of BSN. You must have a rank that applies to everyone, so it's best to make the default rank with no privileges checked (unless you want the group to be "public" which means everyone can see all posts/threads etc.)
Member: This is the rank that many groups will require a moderator/leader to approve, and would have viewing privileges checked, but not administrative or editing privileges.
Moderator/Officer: This generally involves editing privileges, to allow the hiding or changing of posts, and possibly the ability to alter other members' ranks. The title in all cases is cosmetic - what matters is the checked privileges of each rank.
Administrative Rank: This is anyone other than the leader who can alter the administrative settings. It's a good idea to have at least one or two people with this rank, in case the leader is unavailable and anything needs adjusting.
Leader: Self explanatory, and should theoretically have all privileges checked.
A few quirks and notes/bugs:
- The leader cannot give up leadership of the group. They can only "clone" their rank to another person, but they will, by default, retain all administrative privileges (unless that has been changed in the last year.)
- The ranks can bug out and change their settings, but without altering the "checked boxes." This is a fairly serious bug that has popped up in several groups since the move. This can only be addressed at this time by creating new ranks to replace the bugged ones. Determining which ones are bugged can only be done by someone systemically testing who has the necessary privileges. There is a possibility that this bug is responsible for what you are experiencing. Try suggesting that an officer create two new ranks, a new default rank (check above to make sure all privileges are un-checked) and a new moderator rank. If that resolves the issue, then the old ranks are likely experiencing the bug, and it would be best to replace them (this could take a while, depending on the size of the group.)
It's hard to offer the necessary details without going on a great deal, but if you have any specific questions about ranks/privileges, I'll try and remember to check back and answer them.
