In World of Thedas 1 it says that mages usually come into their powers at puberty.   May be it is implied that it is the trauma of puberty that triggers it.   Anyway puberty is meant to be the age at which you become capable of child bearing, which in our world is generally not earlier than 12, although there are instances of girls starting their monthly cycle at an earlier age.    So unless the physiology of people in Thedas is very different to our own world we can assume that generally mages start to manifest their power either during their early teens or just before.

Yet among the people we meet in game there are frequent instances of people manifesting their power earlier than this.   I'm pretty sure that Wynne says she was younger.  Dorian was at mage boarding school and having mage battles at the age of nine.   You could argue those two were child prodigies but  Minaeve was only eight when her clan dumped her and she claims she wasn't a particularly able mage.   I seem to recall Jowan recalls his father throwing him out at an early age and Emile de Launcet claimed in had been in the Circle from the age of six, neither of whom strike me as being particularly gifted mages.    Then there is Merrill.   You could say she was more powerful than most but even so, her magical ability was meant to have surfaced at the age of 4.    This seems very early even compared with the other examples I have given but certainly there is no way this was puberty.

Can anyone throw any light on the apparent discrepancy or is it yet another instance of the lore contained in World of Thedas just not worth reading since it is constantly contradicted by the games?

Pre puberty can hit girls around 9 years old .Boys it happens later.

But then yes , we get stories of non pre puberty children being mages .

And Fiona and Wynne always make a big deal of the children they have among the mages .If magic was related to puberty they'd have really few "children" among them and mostly teen .

So this piece of lore is probably a case where the devs can't make up their minds , in theory magic is supposed to hit at puberty but I think for the sake of drama , we get stories with children instead.

I believe Minaeve was seven... From NPC's I know we've seen seven, nine, and I think there was an eleven somewhere.

The actual line from WoT is, "The talent usually surfaces around puberty..." I think that is vague enough to allow for a certain broader range, depending on the individual. It also does NOT specify trauma, stating, "... and never reveals itself in quite the same way. Signs may be as subtle as spontaneously changing eye color or as extreme as accidentally starting a fire."

I don't think "trauma" is the correct word to use for puberty. It just so happens that all of the stories that we've heard of young mages coming into their magic have been traumatic. Puberty is a series of changes in the body. Whether this has a direct, or indirect, connection to magic manifesting itself in a young mage is anybody's guess.

Emile De Launcet in DA2 came into his power at age 6 I believe so my guess it depends on the individual and their makeup

Yeah I don't think it has anything to do with with puberty itself... Just that most mages tend to discover their powers by then. But many of them can be younger. Like, I think Amell and Jowan from Origins were supposed to be taken to the circle at a young age and that is supposed to be the norm. Anders went to the circle when he was around 12, I think, and that was considered late so he had trouble adjusting.

But anyway, I think it's just supposed to be rare for older teens and adults to discover they are mages. Plus if a mage isn't trained, the lore says their magic becomes chaotic and doesn't fully form, and they can't do proper spells, anyway.

It does seem that what the entry in WoT should have said was that a mage should have manifested the talent by puberty, so essentially if you have got to teenager and not shown any talent, then it is likely you haven't got it, but that it can show itself at any age up to then.    That would then account for the spread of ages across childhood in the characters we have encountered.   Thanks for the input; that has clarified it in my mind at least.

6-12-18 usual

very rare if they older 18, but magic powers(not weak ones with lyrium) can be activated as we know with deamon and blood magic rituals, so if someone have mage father/mother and for some reason not become mage could become one and everyone have blood with magic potential sinse ancient tevinters cross breeding with elves, all who have dreams can

never have mention if they are younger than 6, even with Kierran

I normally equated mages getting their powers to how mutants get theirs in the x-man comics.  Some time around puberty and with some event that helps trigger them.

Merrill was given to the Sabrae clan at the age of 4, which means her magic must have manifested by then because she was specifically given to them because there wasn't any other mage in their clan to be apprentice to Marethari.   Emile du Launcet was 6 and Minaeve either 7 or 8, but in each case definitely well before puberty.
