It was a start. With ME2, the only real way to advance the plot, was to meet and recruit the characters, and to get the best outcome, you had to talk, get to know, and help win your characters loyalty for maximum efficiency in taking on the Collectors, which was the end game set from the very beginning.
The characters in ME2 drive the narrative and plot more than the other two games, therefore I'd say ME2 is a character-driven story. Though again, it is debatable as to how much of a story ME2 has.
So, Shinobi said a bunch of things about Andromeda at the NeoGAF forums

ME3 > ME2 > ME1 for me. ME 1 got me into the series enough to give ME2 a shot and it was ME 2 that got me hooked. ME1 was okay but the Mako sucked, running around for collectibles on pointless planets sucked, never finished them. The squad quests were okay but not very engaging. The combat was meh overall. The only thing that saved ME1 for me was Saren and the intro to the Reapers. ME 2 improved on a lot of what I didn't like about ME1. And the suicide mission was perhaps the best use of all the characters we picked up. I see no point in running around for a bunch of companions with different skills if all we're gonna do is take two or three into the final battle. I didn't like the Collectors plot but everything else made up for it. I just wished we could have joined Cerberus by choice or return to the Alliance so we could have a two path type of story line because the "forced to join Cerberus" story (mostly for a Paragon) was weak. ME 3 (with MEHEM) is my number one. And the DLCs especially, Citadel, were perhaps the best.

Like Hell. The crappy control of ME1 makes it a chore to play compared to other games. ME3 has good gameplay, quests, everything was good up until the ending. She got it right the first time.

I recently replayed a bit of both on PC, and amazingly.... ME2 has worse controls. They are terrible. Console players hate ME1 because, well, gamepad. But on PC, it's much better. ME2 went full console with everything.

Some quests were good. Others were bad. And there were many others problems in ME3 long before the endings.
All ME games had their pro and cons, Rating them as better then the other is a totally subjective thing based on how much you value the pro and cons in the games.
As even if I do agree with the later games having a better overall gameplay then ME, the most fun I had in any ME game, combat wise, is parking my Mako far outside any area of interest with enemies, and sniping each of those idiots with my rife. Which is a completely subjective thing, but it's still the truth for me.

I honestly didn't had much problems with ME on console either. ME and ME2 have so many differences in how to play that I don't have a problem playing them when I switch from one to the other. Going from ME3 to ME2 is actually a bit more problematic for me, since they follow the same path, but you have less control in how to move.
It might be just my experience though.

You're debating over someone saying whether or not they like onions. Some like them, some don't. It's a matter of opinion.
No it's not. ME1 has a better PC port than ME2. By far.
A crap port is not subjective. It's a crap port.

No, but making the story about the characters and not so much about the story (although the story is there) does.
But only 4 of the squad members (without DLC) were actually interesting enough that you actually wanted to take them anywhere.

I mean....in ME1, those barren planets...you had to have full suit, helmet, often had to stay in the mako. Like a true space mission, you know? The barrenness was qualified. Apollo-esque.
If they ever go back to this, the Andromeda devs might want to look at Space Engineers, especially the planetary survival mode. What they did in that game is very ME1-esque, what with the exploration of a barren landscape that may or may not have a breathable atmosphere for humans.
If planet exploration was brought back, would be nice if the higher difficulties included a survival mode so we have to keep an eye on various vital stats. A lot of games are bringing back this old school RPG mechanic, so having it available as an option for more hardcore gamers (but something you can skip on easy or casual settings) would give the game some variety and provide a challenge for those wanting to try it.

That's subjective. While I rate them in a different way, the only one who I found bland was Jacob, though I didn't hate him.

ME3 was good up until the ending. It's not like the series was some sort of flawless masterpiece until ME3.

I dunno. Overall, I found myself revisiting ME3 the most out of the 3, because the gameplay was, to me, the most fun, and I enjoyed most of its main story missions more than the others. It's easy to look back now and skewer missions like Tuchanka and Rannoch, but on first go I thought they were some of the best moments in the series.

It's true that the games all have pros and cons. Though just because the other games had problems doesn't mean that some people could have a more negative opinion on ME3 even before the endings (even the latter point is not objective, since there are people that like or are fine with them). At the same time even if all ME games have thei pros and cons some might find more problem with ME or ME2 and not ME3. Everyone has their preferences so they might rate one game of the trilogy better or worse then the others based on their opinions of the problems and good things of the said game.
