Errrr.   I think y'all are forgetting something.   Technology advances, even thermal clips.  So, I'll bet you that's how they get around the entire "How are we gonna go to Andromeda and have them drop the exact same thermal clips that fit exactly into our guns?"  They won't.  But thermal clips can cool off.  Make them just cool off (for so many uses), not burn out like we have now.  So, I'll bet you that we have 27/324 but we only have 4 clips, each one can be used 3 times.

Killroy had a great idea for an ammo system, if I remember correctly.

Guns contain two heat sinks. When one heat sink overheats, the gun cycles out that heat sink and loads the other so you can continue firing. Meanwhile, the first heat sink cools down.

Yeah, that was the concept. It's essentially Overwatch's system, just with a lore-friendly explanation/asspull to justify it.

And that's all we need. The gameplay functionality of the clips is preserved, while their BS impact upon lore is expunged. Simple.

It's not even an asspull in my opinion. Present day gatling guns have rotating barrels to spread the heat they generate - it's only logical to apply that principle to thermal clips. They can't be very big since they fit into light pistols, so bigger weapons could easily have a mechanism that rotates several of them without getting too bulky.

I agree. "Rotating" heat sinks make more sense than disposable thermal clips ever did. Something very basic like this should've been their "let's add ammo" solution from the beginning. Whether venting your single sink, or manually switching between multiple intrinsic sinks, there's your "reloading" mechanic. I'd love to see this implemented in MEA, so the multiple issues* created by the addition of ammo can be resolved.

* the weird break with lore
* the ubiquitous clips littering the galaxy (this will be 1000x worse in a beautiful new game in an alien galaxy)
* the awkward and unnecessary questions that arise regarding supply lines and/or technological compatibility of clips in Andromeda

It's one of those ideas that I'm kicking myself for not coming up with when BioWare was soliciting ideas for MEA a few years ago. I really think it would vastly improve the game. There's really no concern with balancing guns in such a system since reload speeds and shots per sink would be variable. And I just can't get over a game set far in the future with technology based on space magic having a traditional ammo system(which is exactly what thermal clips are).

I've honestly become very attached to several of my ideas for MEA, and it bums me out that they'll probably never come to fruition. BioWare seriously needs to hire me, if for no other reason than to burst my bubble and shrink my ego.

I kind of like ammo to be honest.

But yeah Overwatch is Blizzard being Blizzard which is nice and all... want to play Widowmaker myself

Spoiler

Well unless it's DMC.

The problem with that, in my mind, is constant firing. This might mean enemies have to have more health. This could lead to lots of bullet sponge enemies if not balanced correctly.

There's constant firing in ME2 and ME3 since ammo is so plentiful and there are no actual reload animations. With a system of rotating heat sinks and unlimited "ammo" you would actually require a reload animation, making it inherently more balanced and realistic. And for rapid-fire weapons they could easily put a timer on the heat sinks' cooldowns, making you wait a second or two if you shoot the "mags" really quickly, back to back.

One of my favorite things about Widowmaker, apart from her backstory and looks, is her weapon, the Widow's Kiss. It doubles both as an assault rifle and a sniper rifle and you can swap between assault rifle mode and sniper rifle mode really easily.

I wish Mass Effect had a weapon like the Widow's Kiss instead of relying on separate weapon classes.

Also, I liked D.Va's pistol (when she is out of her mech) and Mercy's pistol. They feel properly futuristic.

Thermal clips make no real sense unless you have a factory producing them. So I guess we're mostly back to overheat mechanics, like in ME1 and I think it was a pretty unique characteristic for the franchise.

What about the Indra? Once I'd used it, I couldn't use anything else for my Inflitrators. That thing basically is an AR/SR hybrid. I might have even been willing to try it on a Soldier, but the M7 Lancer exists. I think everyone knows by now how I feel about thermal clips. ;) Plus, I'm not sure how well the Indra would keep up, damage wise, without the massive damage bonuses and near 100% headshot rate of the Infiltrator.

Still, put the Indra in the hands of an Infiltrator. You'll likely find you play somewhat more like a Soldier, due to the high rate of fire. (And I'm talking about with the same build, without TC -> Maksman shenanigans.) It also completely eliminates the need for a sidearm, due to its RoF and huge shot capacity. It's pretty lightweight, too. Very fun weapon, I think. I just finished the trilogy again, last night, with an Indra toting Infiltrator.
