Who would you like to see return as a companion (or like a mentor?)

For DA4 I've been thinking about which characters I would like to see return, or if I'd rather only have new characters.

I think because of what the Inquisitor says at the end of Trespasser some of our old companions can possibly play a significant role, but they will not be in our party again.

Dorian: I would like to see Dorian playing a significant role in the game as a sort of mentor or advisor for the new PC.

Sera: While I personally didn't like Sera all that much, I can see her coming back as a sort of spy network. I think she would want to play some role in stopping Solas' plans just to stick it to him and because she doesn't agree with his ideology.

Iron Bull: If he doesn't stay loyal to the Qun he could make a cameo appearance to help against the Qunari threat.

Inquisitor: I've seen some conversation about possibly having a more story driven/cut scene driven main quest with the Inquisitor being playable while having a new PC. I think it would be awesome if for maybe a quarter of the game you have scenes where you are directing efforts against Solas.

For companions:

Scout Harding: I like the idea of Scout Harding being a companion, because she could be a key agent to relay information back to the Inquisitor. She is obviously skilled, and I don't think Solas would know her well enough to make her a detriment to the team.

Fenris: I think his opinions about magic and the drastic cultural changes in Tevinter in conjunction with the Qunari invasion would be cause enough to get him back in the game. His personality/motivations could also be drastically influenced based on what you do with Hawke in DAI, if you gave him back to his master, etc.

Other than these characters I don't really see any others who would have much reason to be very involved in the story line.

Who do you want to see or who you absolutely don't want to see?

I think we are definitely going to see Dorian, considering he's a magister now, plus he can't die or anything during the story of DAI. I don't think however that he'll be a mentor figure, because:

a - the role does not really fit him, plus he's quite young, so he and the new protagonist could be of the same age

b - Dorian represents one side of the Tevinter politics, he's the leader of the reformist faction. If we are going to get a choice in supporting either the reformists or the conservatives, I don't think that we should ally ourselves automatically with one side.

If Iron Bull is alive and the lover of Dorian, I'm confident he'll make an appearence too. He also can appear if they are not lovers, it is quite easy make up something about  a job in Tevinter.

I don't think Sera will appear, as the epilogue states, she stayed in Orlais; plus she hates mages, so I find it difficult for her to undertake a long journey to the north, to a land filled with people she hates.

I really hope the Inquisitor will not be playable character. They are missing an arm, and it was an obvious decision from the devs, to keep the people asking for the Inquisitor to be brought back as the player character. They could, however appear in a cameo, related to one of the quests in the main storyline (something along the lines as Hawke appeared).

As much as I like Harding, I don't know about her being a companion, as I'd like to see a classic, beared, axe wielding dwarven party member (like Oghren) again, after the recent years where the dwarves were archer rogues.

Fenris could appear - even if he was sold back as a slave to his old master, I'm sure they can find some meaningful quest for him.

Now for my own thoughts on new characters:

I'd like to know what happened to Anders if he survived, as I believe he went to Tevinter after the mage-templar war broke out, as neither side welcomed him in the south.

There is also a possibility that Shale will appear, as she mentioned she'd like to go to Tevinter and study about golems to regain her mortal body. And since the novel Asunder is now fully canon, and Shale is alive, I'm confident that we are going to see her again.

If Sten is alive, he's now the new Arishok, so with the qunari threat and everything, I think he also has a big chance of appearing.

Speaking of qunari, I think there is a slight chance that we are going to see Tallis again, as she'd make an interesting storyline, considering her constant doubts about the qun.

Others, who might appear: Isabela, Zevran, Josephine, Bethany/Carver

Also, I want a mabari again

I'd like to see Alistair, Zevran, Anders, Nathaniel, Hawke,  Cole, and Dorian return and any of them to be companions. Alistair and Hawke could be my warriors, Zev and Nate could be my rogues, and Anders and Dorian could be my mages.  B)

I never want to see Vivienne again.

I think we can count on seeing Dorian again, in some capacity, since it seems likely we'll be in Tevinter. I would also like Harding to return as a companion.

Other than that - it would be nice for Iron Bull and/or Fenris to have cameos in world states where they're still alive. I'd also like to see Merrill again, to hear her take on what we now know about elven lore. (I'm assuming it will filter back to her via Varric, eventually.) While I don't necessarily need to see them in the flesh again, I'd really like to know what happened to the Awakening Wardens other than Anders/Justice, since they're nowhere to be found in DAI. My headcanon is that they went with the Hero of Ferelden/Orlesian Warden to look for the cure, but it would be nice to have that confirmed.

As much as I like Harding, I don't know about her being a companion, as I'd like to see a classic, beared, axe wielding dwarven party member (like Oghren) again, after the recent years where the dwarves were archer rogues.

Obviously the solution here is to have more than one dwarf in the party!

I'd like to see Cullen back but as a companion, fully playable. Dorian because he is Tevinter and, if we go there that makes sense. Other than those two, all new companions would be great.

As for NPCs Leliana because she has at least made a cameo in every game so, have to have her. Morrigan/Flemeth same reason. If we saved Alexeuis he should be there since the Inquisition is over so he won't be jailed or doing research anymore. Movran The Under and his hold would be cool to go visit in Tevinter.

Merrill, because of Solas and all of the elvish things going on.

Calpernia & Dorian as faction leaders you can support.

Fenris. It would be interesting if he was one of Calpernia's supporters, and if he's dead maybe have some NPC replace him...?

The Iron Bull, if we're going to Seheron and/or Par Vollen.

Sten/Arishok, if we're going to Par Vollen.

The old Arishok, if alive. According to what this video says, he might be involved in a coup to overthrow Sten/Arishok. Since the bartender also says the same thing if Hawke killed the Arishok, he could be replaced by someone else if he died in DA2.

Lace Harding is sweet and occasionally funny, but far from interesting. I never felt like "Wow, there is so much potential! I wish the game would go deeper into that character".

I'm glad that more people besides myself want to see Fenris again. It always seemed like more people disliked him than cared for him.

To be honest, he did kinda felt out of place for a DA game, with his abilites, attitude and overall appearence.

Speak for yourself, a lot of people wanted the game to let us go deeper into that character... ;) :P

Well a lot of things/people who were introduced or reintroduced in DA2 felt out of place in the dragon age universe.

His appearance I would say is a bit unusual, but I thought his personality and abilities made sense considering his background. It was also fun having a warrior with magically enhanced abilities who wasn't a templar.

I don't wanna see anyone who could've died in any of the previous games. Nothing worse than making a choice and having a character die as a consequence only to have that choice retconned 'cause magical resurrection or some other shite. I put good effort into killing that Fenris rodent, I don't want him forced back into my game. Same goes for any other scrub that I eliminated or allowed them to be eliminated. If they're dead by my choice, then it probably means I intended it to be that way; don't retcon mein shet.

As for who I want to see come back, I don't really have anyone particular in mind. I'm down for whoever they can make work - if it fits the story and doesn't contradict anything. Considering filthy elves are probably gonna litter the next game I'd like to see a Garithos-like character, either as a companion or a main NPC.

Fenris took a while for me to warm to, but that seems to be something I tend to find with certain characters on my first playthrough.

Zevran in Origins, Fenris in DA2, as well as Sera and Dorian in Inquisition all required me play the game a few times before I really came to appreciate and realise how much I enjoyed their characters. Rather than ninjamancing my character, they seemed to bypass them and instead ninjamance me as the player on my second or third game.

The only character that I can say hasn't done that yet is Vivienne. As much as I want to and try to, I cannot bring myself to like her... because just when I feel like there might be hope for her, she ruins it by opening her mouth and saying something snooty.

I'm a firm believer of the "Lace Harding and Cremisius Aclassi for DA4 companions" squad.

That being said, I'd like most characters from Inquisition to appear in DA4, if possible. Dorian makes the most sense since Tevinter is the most likely location, but some more qunari would be nice, too. Also, please, more Varric and Cassandra -- but I'm biased, so it doesn't mean much coming from me, since they're my two favorite characters from the whole DA universe. As far as DA2 characters go, I'd like to hear more from them, especially Merrill and Anders since a) Varric kept in touch with her through Inquisition unless I'm very much mistaken and B) the guy blew up a chantry, so it's the least we can do to at least acknowledge that he still exists.

Ser Michel de Chevin/Imshael - probably not going to happen (if it were to happen would be more likely as a temp companion scenario) but I liked both characters so much and having one as a companion somehow depending on who lived would be so great.

Choice. Spirit!

Lace Harding - probably more chance of happening.

Kieran - but no idea how that would work in pt where he isn't even born :(

Shale - Supposed to be in Tevinter right?

Calpernia and See Barris, both as companions...yeah I doubt Barris will happen since he is presumably dead i n many (most?) world States, but I can dream.

I hope we get few returnees. The only ones I'd like to see are Calpernia and Harding. We already know Dorian (and Maevaris) are going to be in Tevinter, so that's 3 familiar faces, which are more than enough for me. We'll also probably see Sten as an antagonist, so that's 4 returning characters. Other than these, everyone else should be new (maybe a Fenris cameo, but I don't care either way about him).

As much as I love Fenris, and would love to see him return, I don't want to see anyone who could be dead.  BW gave a good reason for Leliana's return, Wynne had a canon reason for being able to be present during Asunder even if she was killed in game, Anders faked his death in Awakening and Morrigan was never killed but I don't want them pulling that any more.

So -

Harding.

Mae.

Dorian.

I don't want to see people who are dead if they are dead, if you see what I mean. Zevran and Nathaniel had optional appearances in DA2 if they were alive, and I don't see why they couldn't do a couple of side quests like that in DA4. (I realize that Zevran has a bad habit of being alive when he's meant to be dead, but the Keep makes bugs like that easier to address than they used to be.

Yeah.  I don't mind characters returning for cameos, but this thread is about companions and mentors.  And I don't want a character who should be dead as a major character in DA4.  I'd love to help out Fenris or Shale in DA4 if there's a quest involving them, but both of them can be killed and shouldn't come back as major players.

Cole, if he's not busy. He's sweet and a treasure trove of lore.

Vivienne.. yeah we use each other but she's sharp and gets things done. She could probably handle the aristocracy if we go to Tevinter. That could be an opportunity for further character development.

Merrill, she at least knows how to recover Elvhen artifacts which could provide useful. Also, knowledge of blood magic.

Maybe Cillian for the first reason as Merrill, provided he's not working for Solas. To be honest if he was, that'd make for an interesting story/romance.
