If Abelas had anything against Solas, he wouldn't bother refuting the idea that she was murdered by Fen'harel.

I don't think that's true. Because that would mean he would have to deny her true killers, and I would imagine he could never do that.

Solas is not Abelas' god and I really doubt that ancient elves will value other gods than their own. So it matters to Abelas that Solas took Mythal's power.  Anyway my intention wasn't to start an argument but just say that I would see Abelas as a mentor and I would love to see him again. I also hope that he will be LI.

Shale and Zevran! It would be fun to see their reunion. They had a great chemistry in Origins:)

Merrill could help with eluvians. In Trespasser Dorian talked about researching and building eluvians. It would be useful to have personal network of euvians.

Valta. Well I really want to know what happened to her. And I always like talking with Master Tethras, if he would become tired from ruling Kirkwall, he's always welcome as my advisor. :)

I'd rather have the companions in DAI fill the role of important non-companion NPCs in the next game should the Devs decides their return.

Like say Dorian, taking up the function as both your sponsor and mentor. Or perhaps Sera giving you hints and clues while being anonymous for half the game.

I'd love to see Cullen / Jossie making a cameo (but also mortified by the prospect >.< what if they screw it up badly? Ouch  ) just for my PC to pester them with questions about the Inquisitor. Or perhaps they're there for a while acting on behalf of the Inquisitor before s/he jumps on the screen (if dual protagonist route) :P should either of them return however, pls don't let it end badly :(

As for familiar faces as companions in the next DA game I'd like to see either:
1. Rylen - couldn't die no matter what, could be that someone with Templar abilities. And please please please please please make him available for my next elvhen lass :D as her LI
2. An Ancient Elf, Temple of Mythal survivor (Arcane Warior with serious offensive skills)
3. Lace Harding, filling the slot of nifty finger companion :D
4. I'd like to say Otranto, but too bad he's engaged to Josie in some PT :( .. (not a death penalty, I know  but I'd like to have him as a romance option for one of my ladies :D )

But please, only 1 of them should be suffice. More than that, it'll be an over kill for me =/

Companions:

Lace Harding- It seems as if they were building up her character to be a LI companion in the next game. I mean she is really everywhere for a character that has nothing much to do with the story. She is the first person you meet in every region, appears in Skyhold, has flirty options (testing her out as a romance option), Was there for the final battle with Cory (falling off his floating rocks too) and appears at the very end of Trespasser.

Charter- She seems to have potential. She is in Haven and then in Caer Bronach. I think they also put her in the new comics, but I know nothing about them. I would like her to be a companion and I only noticed one other comment mentioned her.

Maevaris Tilani- I think I actually prefer her to be a companion rather than Dorian (I do extremely love Dorian). She was in the comics as well as mentioned more than once in the last game. She will fit very well into the setting of the next game. She is a very interesting character and I think she is a better option than Krem who could be dead (I might get backlash for that comment).

Feynriel- He isn't dead and is most likely in Tevinter. Knowing that the Rite of Tranquility can be reversed, I don't see it being an issue for his character, some story can be made up. Same goes for him being possessed by the demon. I think it would be interesting to focus on dreamers in the next game, as well as have a dreamer specialization maybe?

Anaris- I know this is not really a returning character, since the forgotten one is only mentioned via dialogue or codex but still. I think that Anaris and Solas were friends to some capacity and possibly rebels together. Anaris is mentioned in Trespasser (seemed to be connected to Solas to some extent). I just think the story could be interesting in this regard- friend or foe? It is a bit of a stretch on my part, I know, but I would love to see this happen!

Other possibilities include: Sutherland & Valta.

Mentors\Advisor:

Dorian Pavus- He will most likely appear in the next installment, but I believe he is better suited as a mentor\advisor.

Knight-Captain Rylen- I think his character has great potential, although considering his rank I believe he makes more sense as a mentor than a companion.

Cole- I can see him more as a helper, he likes to help. Popping in here and there, a guiding hand. He will be where he is needed most. I have a feeling we will be in such situations.

Cameos & side quests:

I personally like cameos, but It is difficult at times depending on who is alive and who is dead.

Fenris- makes sense that he would be in the area if he is alive.

Shale- I am not to fond of her, therefore I do not want her as a companion. However, a side quest to help her achieve her goal would be nice.

Alistair \ Stroud \ Loghain \ Hawke- depends on the outcome of HLTA. They seemed to hint that there will be more about the wardens in the Anderfels, so I could see a little something with them.

Arishok aka Sten- Considering there is a war being waged by the Qunari I think an appearance is likely.
Cassandra \ Leliana- depending on choice in DA:I, I can see one or maybe both making an appearance.

In general, I would like to continue as the inquisitor if possible, though it is unlikely. I prefer that most of the companions would be completely new ones or simply ones we don't know much about.

^Wait... I may have missed something, but at what time Anaris was mentioned on Treaspasser? Aren't you confussing him with Felassan?

Besides the fact that the Forgotten Ones are mentioned through the codex and that I think it would be cool to get one and hear their side of the story, there is this little part-

Ar-melana dirthavaren. Revas vir-Anaris.

This is what you can say to the guardians if you drank from the well and they let you pass. I found it interesting. It is a secret greeting from those Fen'Harel trusted, so why would it mention Anaris and in that context (loosely translated to freedom by the way\path of anaris)? It is probably a silly theory, but I stand by it  ;)

Nice theory, according to a legend Anaris tried to kill Fen'Harel for his betrayal on the Forgotten Ones, meaning that he had to be free after the Great Betrayal, if he is used on a salute, he may have been a best friend or even a mentor to Solas.

Scout Harding would make for an excellent agent of the Inquisitor/Inquisition to use against Solas.

Dwarves don't dream and cannot easily enter the Fade (unless unique circumstances arise), so it'd be highly-unlikely they might cause any information leaks because they have no dreams a Dreamer can "listen in" on.  Nor can Mages gain any information on them from local Spirits, since we are told that Spirits don't pay that much attention to Dwarves because of their lack of connection to the Fade.

Someone like Harding would be extremely useful against Dreamers, because she's essentially invisible to their radar.

There seemes to be a lot of noise for Harding as companion.. wonder what are the chances of her making it to the companion roster?

Hmm..

I would like the next game to have a mix of both old and new characters so that there is still a connection with what had happened previously in the series, but also some fresh faces.

Dorian is pretty much set to be in the next game with all the foreshadowing in Trespasser. Would like to check up on Varric and Cole, but they don't have to be companions again per say.

I would really want to some of my Origins companions again.  I was expecting to see Sten (he's the new Arishok) and Shale (appears in the novel "Asunder") in Inquisition because of their plots in the comic and novel, but if the next game centers around Tevinter and the Qunari I can see them making an appearance. Would also love to see Oghren again.

As for new companions, lots of people want Abelas, Michel de Chevin and Scout Harding. I wouldn't mind any of them, but I've always wanted a Saarebas and a morally ambiguous (bordeline "evil") Tevinter Blood Mage companion (Dorian was too nice).

I'd like to only see characters who have a legitimate reason to be there.

If the game is set in Tevinter, then I would like to see Dorian and do not want so see Josephine for example. Sure they can make up a reason for anyone to be anywhere but I'd rather they did not make up silly reasons for Cassandra to be strolling around Tevinter. I also feel we've seen enough of some characters. I like Leliana, Cassandra, Varric and Cullen but they've been in multiple games already. It's time for some new characters.

I'm hoping for Michel de Chevin and Scout Harding for companions. A female dwarf companion would be nice and I've always wanted an Orlesian chevalier for a companion (I find it odd there wasn't a companion like that in Inquisition since it was set in Orlais...).

I don't want a big cameo fest but I always like to see a minor character get a bigger role. I hope they do another "Cullen". I really liked his story through all 3 games.

Michel? Besides that he is posibly dead, what would be his legitimate reason to be wandering on Tevinter?

I would PAY for DLC content that would allow my next protagonist to be able to romance Knight Captain Rylen, from Griffon Wing Keep! I really need to see his character again, there wasn't enough dialogue with him and he's down right adorable! :D  They put out DLC for Sebastian, at least Rylen could be a more worthwhile companion.   :)   <3 (if it's done right)

I would also like to see Morrigan, Cullen, Dorian, Cole, The Iron Bull, Fenris, Zevran, Alister, Sera, Finn, Fenryal, Shale....there's more too.   :)

Isabella is someone I would like to see more of in the next installment. Complete with a bad ass pirate ship. Maybe have a side quest of recruiting some sailors for her crew or something and then have a main quest line mission involving the ship,

Sten was a vastly under played charter. Deserving of further development IMO.

Sandal.... Because... well... gotta love you some Sandal.... BOOM! Enchantment!

And of course there is the big one. I refuse to accept that we have seen the last of Flemeth. Be it the old hag  resurrected  in some DA2 variation OR a Morrigan version that has been possessed by Mythal. I cannot foresee a DA title without that nutty old bat in it somewhere.

I will add two more to this. Jowan. I know, I know. He was a punk, but if you like a mage for your Warden, then Jowan is your oldest friend. And after Eamon is cured he just disappears. (assuming you don't kill him in his cell) I don't expect him as a main character, but as a tranquil mage in a circle stacking books or something or maybe a codex about what happened to him.

And then there was Lilly. Did she really get sent to the mage's prison? Was she just kicked out of the sisterhood? Did she die in the tower when demons and blood mages were running loose? What happened to her? She just disappears. I hate it when characters, even small ones, just vanish.

Rylen was a very cool character, going back and playing the game it's funny how they mention him a couple times before we properly meet him in the Western Approach. Although he might have appeared earlier, can anyone confirm whether or not the Starkhavener stationed in the bazaar when we first get to Orlais was meant to be Rylen or someone else?

I just played through that last night and I had a really good look at him. He's got a full beard, red, and no facial tattoos. So while the accent is just the same and the voice is similar, it's not Rylen (though it could be the same voice actor).

Rylen was great!   :D His personality and accent were adorable. They REALLY need to expand on him. At the war table Cullen asks Lelianna if she read 'the report' she responds and says it was 'interesting' then asks Cullen,'Is he always so blunt?', Cullen chuckles and replies 'Yes'...I'm positive they're talking about Rylen...if not, they should be! LOL 'If the barracks are on fire I'm grabbing a bucket of water, not smiting the ash for heresy.'  LOVED that line!   :D

Since it is very likely that the next Dragon Age game (whenever it comes out) is taking place in Tevinter, I'd say we can be pretty sure we are going to see Dorian Pavus again. There's no way to kill him in-game and by the time Trespasser is over, he's a reform-minded Magister with a murdered father to investigate. He's either going to be a party member or a quest-giver. He's definitely going to be there.

I'm just sad David Gaider moving on means he won't be there to safeguard our favorite 'Vint. :( The last time one of Gaider's beloved characters was passed on to someone else, it was Anders, and....uh.... well, we know how that ended.

ADDENDUM: If Cullen isn't a lyrium junkie by the end, he mentions being willing to pick up a blade again if ever needed. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back, probably leading some sort of calvalry.

I hope Cole has an appearance in DA 4. Ideally as a mentor, seeing as he's a spirit of compassion and loves to help. Maybe he does the same thing he did in inquisition an d pops up out of nowhere and starts helping. Except now he's more experienced.

I think it is very possible to see Cole again, but I think only as a cameo.

Since I just played the Descent, I'm gonna say Valta for companion! Cool character with a strong connection to an area of the lore that hasn't been explored as much and has what could probably be a very interesting combat mechanic in that she's a dwarven warrior with some kind of magical ability previously unseen.

I like Korbin from multiplayer and I would love to have him in the next game, but I dunno how likely that is. Maybe we'll meet a relative in the Ambassadwarfia. :P

I thought for sure Warden Carver/Bethany would make an appearance in DAI, but I suppose they have so many different fates it'd be difficult to implement them convincingly. And, uh, given what happened to Stroud/Alistair/Loghain, maybe our sibling is better off out of the spotlight...

As for Tevinter, I figure we might see Dorian, possibly Fenris, the Stenishok, Maevaris, Calpernia, Charter, Barris... and maybe easter eggs involving Cole or Red Jenny.
