I started ME with a Sentinel, and off the bat was unable to play it even on the casual difficulty, it just died every step. I've never played an FPS before, so I rerolled a Soldier which was suggested as the best beginner class. Everything is fine for now, I am slowly making my way through ME. I got a suggestion that I should continue through the Trilogy with the same character because the decisions are preserved.

I do not aim to replay the game, and would like to finish the trilogy before the Andromeda release. Eventually, i'd like to up the difficulty setting to normal, once I get used to controls and re-keybind the skills I find myself using.

Will the Soldier be okay to get through all 3 games?

Definitely yes.  Also, even when you import a save, you can change the class as you do the import.  So, you can take a soldier from ME1 and turn him/her into, say, a sentinel as you begin ME2.  Your story decisions will still carry over regardless.

Great, ty! I'll think about changing a class when I finish the first one. I've liked the Sentinel class description when I just read the overviews. Just was shell-shocked by how hard the game was. Did not expect that at all.

You should try all of the classes.  They remade them, basically from the ground up for ME2 and did some amazing work.  In ME3 they did further work making power usage, character movement and all of that MUCH better.

You're very welcome.  Also, the combat mechanics get quite an overhaul in ME2... much improved in that game, IMO.  Enjoy your run!

If I have time after the trilogy run-through before Andromeda, I might, particularly if I get a better hang of the gameplay in ME2, then rolling a M!Shepard for a Renegade path will be awesome. Sentinel and Engineer were two classes I thought I wanted to try before I ate the dirt, and went conservative.

Everything is relative.  When I talked about Sentinel, that referred specifically to ME2 Sentinel and to an extent ME3 Sentinel (Tech Armor + Fortification).  ME1 Sentinel is not as tanky as ME1 Soldier or Infiltrator because those two have the best defensive power in Immunity.  Barrier isn't bad, it is just that there are a fair amount of shield bypass attacks and you are limited to light armor.  For the light armor exclusive classes, once you have access to a couple medical interfaces / exos and stack health regen the game is a bit easier.  Then once you can get top tier light armors, you are pretty durable outside of trying to facetank snipers or rockets.

Soldier is fine in ME3, and while I would not put it near the top in power, it is fine to get through the game.  Vanilla Soldier isn't really particularly more skilled with weapons in single player given that ARush was never buffed, but can be played partly as a caster and do ok.  The metagame of ME3 is a little whonky.
