Can you ... give me some pointers of how to  kill a thresher maw (that beast always kills me first).

Hi Particia08.

When I played ME-1, I too was a completely inexperienced gamer (yes, a noob), and played ME-1 in the casual difficulty mode (which, I agree, could be more challenging that I wanted it to be). I use a PC, not a console game box, so I don't know if my comments will translate to your equipment. But I'd like to try and help you. I had a very frustrating time with the Thresher Maw too, but eventually I got the hang of it. Here's what helped me.

1. This ME Wiki page talks about helpful strategies:

      http://masseffect.wi...her_Maw_(enemy)

There are several helpful tactical suggestions here for the Shepard class you are playing.

2. Calm down. "Fear is the mind killer." (from Dune)  So is frustration - it causes me to stop thinking clearly.  I found I needed to approach this combat as a fun experience, not a dreadful one. My mindset was this: I'm going to learn how to do this through failures, and I won't care how long it takes me. It's kinda like learning how to be a Matador for fun, except you keep moving around in a truck. And when I am feeling over-stressed (which I do to myself quite often with a type-A personality), I walk away from the game, go to the bathroom, then get a nice drink of cool water, and go scream out loud into the backyard. If that fails, I then spray my face with cold water. It works like a charm for me every time!

3. Practice driving backwards, sideways, and rocking back/forth and sideways while focusing your turret on a practice target, like a rock in the area. I also practiced my circular driving and shooting maneuver in the area. Get comfortable with changing your mako's directions. The more you drive over uneven terrain the more you will train yourself to handle the mako more comfortably. And for gosh sakes - avoid driving over rocks.

4. Driving outside the circular perimeter of the TM's nest is my safe zone. That's where I take a breather as needed, but I keep driving around the perimeter until I'm  ready again to venture back into the nest area.

4. When I'm ready to be adventurous, I drive the mako just along the inner part of the circular perimeter of the flat nest area. Gradually I circle into the nest area a tiny bit at a time, but I keep driving the circular path. As soon as I hear its 'cry of the banshee', I navigate back to the circular perimeter, turn the Mako's turret to shoot the Thresher for about 3-4 seconds, then drive back to the safety of the outer edge of the circular perimeter. Any damage inflicted on the TM will remain, so you can whittle it down after repeating this maneuver until your business is completed. In time I found dealing with the TMs became a bit fun, and I'd venture into the nest with more confidence and daring.

5. I never fought on foot. I always stayed in the Mako so I could get out of trouble quickly. I don't care about the extra XP when dealing with the TM on foot.

I hope this is somewhat helpful. Never give up trying.

I've always been fond of circle strafing a maw on foot.  As long as you stay out of melee ranged the spit will land where your were, and not where you are.  With a little practice, you can get the distance down to where it will stay up and spit and not dive under and move.

Try going to the bottom of the page, click 'change theme' and try out the BioWare dark option.

Thanks Arcadia!  I'm much satisfied with the dark option.   :D

For me, I prefer PC.  Speaking of, there are a new series of graphics cards coming out at the end of the month.  My Titan Xs are not very happy now that they are no longer top of the line.  GTX 1080's are faster and cheaper and use less power.

Oh i prefer the PC to there is just so much more possible when i am playing a game on PC i can cheat more easily and i can play shooters more easily ( mouse and keyboard ) and there are probably more reasons that i would prefer the PC.

Yep, Kaidan and Liara for femShep, Ash and Liara for maleShep.

It's pretty easy, they all throw themselves at you.  Just chat to everyone on the ship after the big missions are over.

And yes that is easy if they throw themselves at you.

The mission that recruits Liara is the one Udina mentions when you are first given the Normandy.  It takes place in the Artemis Tau cluster.  She cannot arbitrarily read your mind when she touches you but can perform a sort of mind meld with you when you consent to it.  These mind melds help to explain Shepard's vision and advance the plot.  The romantic encounter with either Kaidan (or Ashley) or Liara takes place just before you head into the final mission.  Depending on whether or not you''ve recruited Liara and on your dialogue choices with her and/or with your Alliance squad mate, there may be a jealous confrontation triggered after either the Feros or Noveria missions.  This confrontation will not occur if you recruit Liara late in the game and/or you equivocally tell Liara or your Alliance squad mate (or both of them) that you are not interested in a romantic relationship.

Advice from a fellow completionist:

After you've done one or two playthroughs, stop.  Go on youtube.  There are scores, possibly hundreds, of videos where people have recorded all the possible combinations of squadmates & dialogues.  You can see all the variations in a single 20-minute video instead of playing the same 20-minute mission a dozen times over.  Saves a lot of time while still satisfying my completionist cravings.

The big worm is a thresher maw.  Stay in the mako and ride around in circles shooting at it with the canon.  Don't stop, it'll get ya.

Also I stay back with sniper rifles and pistols, letting Kaidan run in with Biotics and do the hard work.

Nice.

To add: When possible, I hide behind rocks with the mako and shoot from there sometimes... O;

If you are talking about fighting the Thresher Maws well the first time that i encounter one of them there was no rock anywhere to hide behind. So maybe you are talking about rocks on a planet where i have not been yet.

Most Thresher Maw encounters are out in the wide open (it forces you to maneuver).  The pop up and shoot works very nicely against Geth Armatures and the like.

The easiest way to fight a Thresher Maw in the Mako is stop moving the Mako when it first pops up, then just jump over its acid spit.

The Thresher Maw will stay in one spot as long as you do not move the Mako. So you can shoot the Mako mini-guns for a few seconds, then fire its cannon, then jump over the acid spit. Repeat.

I wish I had replied to this thread earlier.

There is a -50% XP penalty for killing enemies in the Mako (you earn 50% less XP if you kill an enemy in the Mako), which is one of the stupidest things I have ever encountered in a video game. I have said this before: the developers gave us a real cool tank to play with, then gave us some sections designed specifically for the Mako, then punished us for using the Mako. So what a lot of players do (myself included) is use the Mako to whittle down enemy health, then get out and kill the enemies on foot to maximize XP gain.

Late game, when you have better equipment (armor, weapons, mods, amps, omni tools) and you are leveled up more, it is actually quicker to get out of the Mako and kill things on foot since you can out-damage the Mako and you can maneuver easier on foot.

Some other advice:

  • Weapon accuracy + recoil depends on your weapon, points put into the weapon talent, whether you zoom in with the weapon, whether you are moving or stationary, and whether you are crouching. Early game when your weapon sucks and you have no good mods or points in your weapon talents, it is best if you crouch in one spot and shoot to keep your accuracy as high as possible (which is not much).
  •
  • Early game, take cover. For side missions on uncharted worlds, do not be afraid (be cowardly!) and hang back to hide behind large crates or doorways at the beginning and funnel enemies toward you. Late-game most classes are durable enough to walk in and soak up huge amounts of enemy fire.
  •
  • When you reach level 20, a special mission will unlock (Rogue VI on Luna). Hackett will inform you of this mission the next time you access the galaxy map. If he does not, go to the citadel or a cluster you have previously visited and he should inform you then. Completing this mission will give you access to your specialization, a choice from one of two specializations four your class. The specialization will add six more points to your class passive and will give you additional passive bonuses, and will improve some your native class powers.

Apologies for not replying earlier. Hope you are enjoying the game so far.

And that's okay you don't have to apologize that you did not replied to my topic earlier  ;). And yes i am enjoying the game so far not all the time though there were some irritating fights when my stupid quadmates died in like 3 seconds and i was all alone fighting  :(. And in one of those fights ( with no quadmates ) i almost had them all and then they killed me really frustrating fight was that it almost made me quit the entire game.

When your squad mate health goes down, don't be afraid to use Medi-Gel to revive them.  In ME1, there is an endless supply of Medi-Gel since you can always completely refill in the med bay on the Normandy between .  Once you get enough points to unlock Unity, you'll be able to revive your squad more easily.  In ME2, the medi-gel works a little bit differently and the supply is more restricted; but in ME! just go ahead and use it liberally rather than try to hump through battles without your squad.  There is usually also a medi-gel station or two in each battle area or sometimes just inside the lobby of the buildings where you can restock.  As was posted previously, you can also revive your squad without medi-gel (if you're really out of medi-gel) by just running out of the battle area (e.g. exiting the building);

Also, equip your squadmates' armor with a First Aid Interface (early game), Medical Interface (mid game) or a Medical Exoskeleton (late game).  This ensures that their health will automatically regenerate even if they don't have a place to assign points towards health regeneration in their skill tree.  Once you get to Level 7 armor for them, you will be able to equip two mods for them, so I generally keep one as the Medical one and select the second one based on the mission.  Squadmates who have omni-tools can also get a health regeneration boost from different brands.

I wish all those things you mention here that you get at the end of the game were also at the beginning of the game as well. For me it's quite a difficult game even in casual mode. If i could cheat i most certainly would and i said this before the AI of my squadmates is really terrible.

Thank you for this  ;)

Agree that the squadmate AI is really terrible.  I like using a sniper rifle, so I often pick a good perch behind a knoll and usually order my squad to stay down in cover by the mako' they generally follow me and then stand right on top of the knoll firing their little pistols at the distant targets until they get taken out by the enemy. Once I get Garrus or Ashley leveled up in sniper rifles, I can sometimes get a little help from them, but they do still tend to stand out in the open a lot.  At range, they also have an annoying tendency to tell me it's "all clear" even as they are taking fire.

Unfortunately, sniping thresher maws from behind knolls usually isn't possible because they just go back underground when you're at range... but it works great on any of the mercs outside the various bases in the game.

As a general rule, your squad mates will revive on their own any time your radar is completely free of red dots (if the battle is taking place outdoors) or if you exit the building where the battle is (sometimes even just backing into the lobby area will be enough... but not always).  This also works in ME2 and ME3 (although it's often tougher to execute in those two games).  ME2 and ME3 allow you to split up your squad, so you can position them in more tactical places more easily, so you shouldn't need to rely on medi-gel or running out of area quite so much anyways.

Well yesterday i killed my first Thresher Maw on foot and uh that was really easy to thanks to you all. I shot him in my Mako and just jumped over the acid that he spits at me i got hit only one time ( the first ) because i did not calculate my jump correctly. But after that it was easy and when he was almost killed i got out of my Mako and finished him on foot.

Thank you all for the help  ;).

And i rescued Liara T'Soni yesterday as well so now my team is complete finally.
