Hello everyone, Hopefully this is in the write board xD if not apologies.

So I've played DA:O and DA2 in Origins I played an elf mage (cause why not) and in two I played as a rogue since it was more fun then the mage. I've played both mage and rogue in DA:I but I stuck between the two. I like the mage and it's abilities but I find it a bit boring after awhile, besides having a role in the templar and mage issue. For the rogue I also like it since I have the ability to lock pick but I'm not a fan of the bow and arrow even though their moves are powerful, so I prefer DW.

I understand I can have more than one play through but I'm a student/worker so I would rather get most out of one play through and take my time then have two unfinished play throughs.

I'm not that knowledgable about the specializations so including those would help a lot. I'm also stuck with either playing human, elf or qunari.

Sorry it may seem confusing, never really asked for opinions before lol XD thank you in advance.

I would say female elf mage fits the story best because there is a lot of elven lore in DAI Rogue is quite good fun in DAI as well though because again you can brea kthrough locks and use stealth attacks and all that. again that's up to you though. As for specializations my personal favourites are rift mage and Knight enchanter. Unfortunately in DAI you can only pick one spec though in each playthrough. Rift mage is more a crowd control/deal with enemies at range style spec. Because most of the powers in that are ranged as you have access to spells like Stonefist from DAO and DA2 and Firestorm which allow you to cover an area with fireballs, also Pull of the Abyss is part of that spec as well. Knight Enchanter is like the Arcane warrior spec in DAO in that you can get up close and personal with enemies and use a sword albeit a magic one that charges up as you use other abilities but it does a great deal of damage per strike so it's a useful ability to have

I'd go Qunari or Elf Dual Weild or mage.

If Dual Wield, Artisfer or Assasin and, if mage, knight Enchanter because that brings a bit of a melee element to mages. Story wise anything but human is a bit more challenging on one quest, makes you work harder, think more and get it right. Story wise and elf with Mythal taboos is cool but, so is a Qunari, especially if you have Trespasser.

Thanks guys for your input it really helped out especially with the specializations. I'll probably start with the elf as far as lore goes and get that out of the way. I'll probably choose mage for my first run (which might take forever lol).

Is the rogue AI any good. Read that some of them can be a bit weird.

AI is weird period but, changing some of the behaviors can help, just tinker with it with each companion and find what you like best for them as far as who to follow, defend, etc.. in targeting behavior. Cole does well once he has the gear to give him the defenses he needs. Sera is bad for getting too close and, Varric loves leaping shot to little pieces for me. I change thier settings and enable or disable some abilities on the boss and dragon fights if I have them along.

AI is an absolute idiot with the Reaver warrior specialization so, have to micro manage that one if you want him to work right.

DW Rogue is the most fun class to micromanage/control IMO.

Yeah there is alot of choices bu that's why I love these games personally and why I keep coming back to them. Quite often I just hit randomise on the DAKeep to see what it picks for me in terms of Origin and spec and then build a story around that. Served me well doing that as I've had a lot of interesting playthrough's because of it

What spells are recommended for new mage other than Barrier and Guardian Spirit.. I picked up both Lightning Bolt and the first fire spell on right side, just looking for other ideas. Human mage for the extra spell.

Buy a Taciticians Amulet from the blacksmith shop so you can rebuild your mage from scratch. It refunds all your spent points so that you can allocate them as below.

Here's a low level mage build that is fun and gives your character a high level of defense.

http://forum.bioware...ter-mage-build/

If you don't want to go ice mage, some basics:

Spirit Tree
Barrier + Elegant Defense
Guardian Spirit

Inferno Tree
Immolate
Flashpoint

Storm Tree
Energy Barrage (see staff element below)

Winter Tree
Winter's Grasp

Those are good starting abilities for a low level mage. You should specialize in one element skill tree, or at most two. If you spread out your points too much, you are mediocre at everything.

Use a staff that is the opposite element of your best damage spell. So if Immolate (fire) is your best, use an electricity or ice staff, so that Energy Barrage is a different element from your best damage spell. That way, if you run up against an enemy that is resistant to one, you have the other to cover.

Inferno skills do the most damage. If you go diagonally from Immolate down to Fire Mine + Searing Glyph, you'll do the most damage a mage can do without specalisation.

At some point you should pick up Dispel and the Transmute Magic upgrade from the Spirit Tree. It's very handy against rifts.

Abilities to stay away from (not as cost effective as others)
Flashfire
Lightning Bolt (unless you are doing Trespasser quests)
Mind Blast

Thank you for that.

Redistributing the points should allow me to pick up 2 of the spirit spells. After that, assuming I pick up Fire Mine at level 7 according to the video, the decison will have to be made if I get Dispel Magic and its upgrade or use those points for other spells, for example the upgrades to Immolate and Fire Mine.
