DAI had 10 regions in the vanilla game and i felt it was too much. Why? Because of the filler feel to most of them. Couple that with the fact that most of the side content were fetch quests and we get a recipe for boredom(me) and laziness(on the developers part).

Mass effect 1 had about two dozen planets to visit. How much is too much? Will MEA have the same amount or more? The risk to having say 50 planets to visit sounds great on paper and fits in with the theme of exploration but will ultimately be mired down with the fact that people will get bored if there is no engaging content in the form of proper side-quests with cinematics, characters, a story etc...

Btw i dont think Bioware is up for it with giving us 50 visitable planets unless the regions are very small and samey. I think about 30 if i were to guess a fair number.

What is your opinion on the 10 regions in DAI, some of which were boring, pointless and lacked in meaningful content.

There's no one specific number that's too much really.

Too much is when they've hit the point that they can't reliably fill those areas with interesting content.

How much is too much?  Depends.

BG2 had ten regions as well (D'Arnise Hold, Umar Hills, City of Caverns, Windspear Hills, Trademeet, The Druid Grove, Suldanessellar, Brynnlaw, The Underdark,  and the Forest of Tethir.

But that doesn't include fairly minor areas like the Temple Ruins, Small Teeth Pass, The Underdark Exit, etc.

Nor does it include Athkatla itself, which is eight districts, each a large map of its own.

Plus there are the many, many dungeons throughout the world.

And there was plenty of engaging content.  So...who knows?

Edit:  Keep in mind I'm the first person to agree that some areas in DAI, like the Exalted Plains seemed rather pointless.

Yes but that was BG2, Bioware' latest game was DAI and it had horrible uninteresting side-content and some dull regions.

I really don't think there is a number to be "too much" the problem is when the design doesn't make use of the area you create.  One of the things they were promoting with Dragon Age: Inquisition was that it could take 30 to 100 hours to play the game so by default they had by design a lot of content that meant very little to the game itself aside from the premise of "stuff to do".  Now if they implemented those areas with more content that was tied to the main story or at the very least wasn't all fetch quest based I could see a different argument being made.

Frankly I disliked the exploration in Mass Effect 1 for again it felt about as much impact as the exploration in Dragon Age: Inquisition for all you got was a few collectibles and loot boxes, otherwise there was one main mission for each planet that was by default on the map.

Where is never much if content is quality content, and not collecting space rocks and asariroot. Less filer areas/quests, more main story or good interesting side quest arcs.

I think 8 is already enough, anymore than that would be too much, especially without practice with smaller size. I don't think 10 would fit and it would tear

into the development of the plot like with DAI where there are a lot of useless places that have no relevant to the plot. Bioware is not Bethesda, their strength is their story telling, having more planets require them to dedicate resource for crafting a coherent storyline.

I think they should have more "regions" as in cool little planet exploration whenever possible. Make it similar but not as repetitive as Mako driving on ME1.

It's cool to land on planets and shoot a few baddies and read some iPads versus scanning for minerals. It adds replay value finding new things you've missed on a first playthrough.

When you start crying by how bored you are with yet another region with nothing to do in it but check out the pretty scenery and pick up pointless things... that's when it's too much.

Bathtub is better than swimming pool if it's filled with water and swimming pool is empty.

It's all about quality vs content. ME3 did have little side quests that involved moving to all corners of the galaxy for no ulterior reason. This was heavily criticized by players and youtubers alike.

I sure hope Andromeda doesn't waste the player's time and patience by repeating that mistake...

That was all optional though. You didn't have to do any of that. I want a galaxy I can explore when I've already completed the story.

Go to some planets, check out the scenery, fight some baddies, or go look for rare items to put towards upgrades. I'm all in it for the replay value and immersion. There doesn't have to be some main story tie in for it to be worthwhile.

                                                                                     <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>>

Reading the update on Mass Effect:  Andromeda, that Bio just released, the focus appears to have shifted a bit on "player freedom" instead of the original "...focus is on exploration...". Could be two sides of the same coin, though.

Anyway, a small Bio recap:

"• More Freedom: One of our biggest ambitions is to give players an unprecedented level of freedom for a Mass Effect experience –where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, and how you’ll play."

"• New Uncharted Worlds: We’re leaving the Milky Way behind and headed to Andromeda, where we’ll meet new allies, confront new enemies, and explore fascinating new worlds."

Plus from Shinobi:

"...I saw as many things to do and discover in one planet here as I did the whole lot of side planets on ME1 ..."

Did Bio learn a lesson from DA:I's massive areas with empty content and decided to fix it in Andromeda? The "how you''ll get there" is interesting. Like with the Mako only?, walk there?, FTL planet to planet?, discover a destination via "loot crates"?, through fetch quests?, via the main story arc? establishing colonies before you can go deeper in the cluster? Or, is this just marketing speech?

Stay tuned !

I don't think it's a case of how many areas is too much. I think it's a case of "how little each area has before it can be considered a bore to go to".

I don't have a problem with more areas. I'd love that in fact. What I have a problem with is those areas not having any damn content in them. And I mean worthwhile content - not just exploratory content like Fetch Quests.
