I've posted this problem before, but I'm doing so here again so it's documented on these new Tech Support forums - for what that's worth. It seems similar to some problems people have been having with their ATi cards, but mine is an Nvidia.

I have Dell XPS M1730 laptop, running Vista 32 bit, dual Nvidia GF 8800m GTX cards and dual core x9000 processors which are not overclocked. I also run the laptop on top of a Zalman NC2000 cooler. The GPU drivers are 186.03 (the second most recent). I  also have an AGEIA PhysX card.

I'm having the same issues with the game as I had with the Character Creator - the game pushes the CPU activity to 100%, which overheats the computer and shuts it down in the space of about 15 minutes.

This particular laptop runs Age of Conan on highest settings with no simila issues. I was amazed that a standalone program like the character creator caused more overheating than the a full-blown game like AoC and was hoping that it was just a problem with the CC, but that hasn't been the case.

For the brief time that it does run, the game runs wonderfully smoothly on max settings.

Currently I'm playing the game by doing the following which seems to reduce the CPU useage:

- Turning on V-sync
- Turning off anti-aliasing
- Running the game in windowed mode.
- Using external cooling

When the CC was released a couple of other people reported the same problems. I can only assume it is a bug due to the fact that

- The CC caused the same issues and one would expect it to not push the useage to the same levels as something like AoC
- Adjusting the game down to full minimal settings does NOT help
- Running the game in windowed mode actually makes things better, not worse which seems bizarre to me

I know that only a small percetage of the playing population seems to be affected by this. I am hoping that we get some OFFICIAL word on it, as it actually has the potential to cause physical and expensive damage to the affected systems.

For the record, the game itself is fantastic and I'm having a blast playing it.

highly doubt that it has to do with your specs,

i would think Malware is the more likely culprit

It is NOT malware, this a known problem.

Anyway try these threads.

Aslong as your temperatures are ok and your fan isn't burning itself out don't worry about it.

ATI 3870 vid card tried the 9.6 through 9.10 drivers. After reading this thread tested game with G15 keyboard performance manager running. CPU held around 83-87% until Ostegar then maxed at 100% then black screen o death. Regardless of what origin path...character, vsync, etc etc it maxes out the CPU right at that point. Literally within 10seconds of loading the save game.

For those not monitoring the other forums, here is an official reply some one got:

Here is what I got after waiting 24 hours for a reply from EA. Some people need new jobs. "Clear my temp file and end background tasks." What a POS incompetent response. Was anyone at EA not dropped on their heads at birth?

--------------------

Hi,

Thank you for contacting EA customer support. We do apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing with the game. Please accomplish the following before launching the game:

1. Empty your Temp folder to prevent file conflicts. Click the below given link for steps on emptying your Temp folder: (FAQ URL)

2. Please end all background tasks to prevent conflicts with other programs. Click below given link for steps on ending background tasks: (FAQ URL)

If there is anything else we can help you with, please do let us know.

Thanks,

Austin

I'm looking at this problem with a pretty even temper...can't expect immediate results etc. etc. But answers like the above...they do more harm than good lol

They just inflame an already frustrated population. If you don't know, or can't see the problem, say that! It'll save the plpayer community a couple of anger induced aneurysms ;)

Have you tried clearing your Temp folder? Maybe it'll bring your "temp" down.

Just as an update, this problem is still an issue. Have updated the drivers to 186.81 the most recent "offical" drivers from Nvidia. Also updated the Physx drivers to the most recent offical ones too. Nil improvement.

Once again, sorry for the unfortunate multiple posting.. The forums seemed to be unresponsive at the time.

UPDATE: Installed the newest patch 1.01 - nil change in issue.

Bought the game yesterday. I also have this overheating problem. Nothing fixes it. CPU usage 100%. PC shuts down in self defense after 2 or 3 minutes,as soon as both cores reach 100 degrees C. Must be software/compatability issue. My rig idles at 42 degrees.

Software should not be capable of overheating a component. If your CPU is overheating from DA, you need better cooling.

Intel's burn tests are more extreme, and your CPU should survive those too.

Very typically, the problem goes back to dirt and dust, and blocked cooling air flow.  Laptops, of course, are simply badly designed for game playing purposes, and haven't got an adequate cooling solution on their own.  They almost always need a "Cooling Tray" when they have as much CPU & video performance as the original poster here had.

Your CPU should be able to run all cores at 100% all the time without overheating. They are designed to work that way. Example there is a program out there called Prime95 that solves a huge math problem and can be set to totally tax your system to the max. Many techs like myself use it as a burn in program. I run it everytime I upgrade my PC to make sure I don't have any bad memory or bad CPU. Currently on my Core i7 975 Extreme I ran it overnight a good 8 hours no issues all cores running at 100%

What makes no sense is that my pc has no problems with Oblivion at very high resolutions and textures etc. COD MW2 runs like a dream at 1440x900 and high textures. In fact no problems with any other games. Surely some dust, not that there is any, would affect other games as well. Only Dragon age finds my cooling inadequate.
