Hello

So I just started my second playthrough of the game yesterday several years after my first full playthrough of the game and falling completely in love with it. This time though I wanted to do something different so while last time I played as a warrior with a specialization in two handed and sword and shield this time I'm playing as an archer. (warrior class still)

But tbh I'm not doing a good job at it at all. I'm not sure if this is a bug (in which case I suppose this thread has to be moved) or if I just don't know the right tactics but I keep getting wiped out. The problem is I can rarely do a ranged attack. Either because when I command my pc to attack she just rushes towards the target as if she were holding a melee weapon or because the target (or another enemy) rushes towards her before she can even get in a pinning shot. The latter happens pretty much with every fight.

Is is supposed to be like that when you're playing as an archer? And if so what's the best strategy for situations like this? I've never played any rpg as an archer before (generally prefer swords) so this is all new to me. Please advice on how best to play this game.

Thanks in advance

I'm a Dalish rogue archer right now and as such I can stay back and not take too much flak.  I make sure I have a piece of jewellery (trinket) that lowers my hostility so that the bad guys go for the other members of my crew.

I haven't been a warrior archer, I'd recommend either respeccing to dual-wielding or something like that, or starting again with a rogue.  For what it's worth being Dalish is great, there are a few new interactions and it gives an interesting new perspective on the game.  I guess you could also be an archer dwarf with a crossbow too, the dwarf noble origin is superb.

Sound like a bug....try restart your character

The first problem I am not sure, sound like a bug

The second one, well, archery talents take few seconds to execute, yes that suck, even with Master Archer....most players only use auto-attack, rarely using the talents. Aim is very slow, unless you do something to bypass it's speed.

Well I...sorta...fixed the latter by giving Allistair the "threaten" ability which does a great job of keeping enemies of my back and about 50% of the battles I can now play ranged. The former hasn't occurred anymore since.

And yes I have "aim" activated at all times since all my other specialties also lie in careful aiming rather than loosing lots of arrows over a shorter amount of time so that explains a lot.

I would never make a warrior primarily an archer; I would do that only with rogues.  If anything, I might make my warrior primarily sword and shield with a secondary archer capability to wear down a powerful boss before sending him/her to do melee damage.

rogue with points spent on dex and cunning is the way of the archer. some points will need to be spent on strength for better rogue armour like battledress of the provocateur, but otherwise put them into dex and cunning

I haven't ever actually played warrior archer myself.  Rogues have the advantage of being able to stack a lot of cunning and use lethality + Song of Courage.  Mostly auto-attack with Aim up and various sustains.  Pretty much like in the guide Qis posted.

If I was going to run a warrior archer though I might consider trying to make him more of a talent spammer, ignoring the relative inefficiency of most archery actives.  You should have a bit better stamina than a rogue, and have access to Death Blow to recover stamina per kill.  AP will be lower than rogue, so you will need to rely on Shattering Shot and whatever sunders other party members can apply, at least against higher tier enemies.

Need 25 strength for Death Blow.  I might just pump the rest more or less into Dex and get a decent defense score.  Specializations seem like a hard choice given that none of them really seem to mesh with archery all that well.

As DAO can have you carry 2 sets of weapons into battle in my last playthrough I had Archer as my primar yand dual weilding with longswords as my second. My city elf was really deadly with them. Was planning a similar approach with my dalish elf when I create her. The only change will be the fact she'll be able to stealth and lock pick things which my city elf couldn't being classed as a warrior

It's not "fair", but if you have Return to Ostagar, the Repeater Gloves are bugged and cut aim time by 3 seconds instead of 0.3 seconds. So you can have Aim active and still be machine-gunning those arrows.

Arrow of Slaying is nasty, but most Archery talents aren't worth it.

It's a lot better to be a rogue if you're going full Archery; the specializations will help you more, rogues get Dirty Fighting/Below the Belt to keep enemies off you, and they generate less threat than warriors inherently.

I liked being a Ranger, the animal summons can help tie down enemies while you pew pew pew from a safe distance.

If you wanna be a warrior, though, you could always use a crossbow and not have to adjust your build much (iirc, dexterity isn't needed for crossbows, and heavy armor doesn't slow their fire).

Well after much finnicking around with tactics and stuff. (disabled evereryone's but the weak temporary party members) I finally managed to get archery working halfway decent. The last bits of Ostagar which I played with a decent set up was fun.

That being said, it's just not worth it for me.So after Ostagar I started putting all my perks into strength and now I wield a battle-axe and do ten times more damage with that than I ever did with a bow and arrow. And that's without any special attack. (so far I only have mighty blow)

Just to check I went back to my previous character which had a lot of strength, could wield a greatsword and had a bunchof special attacks like sunder arms and mighty blow. Played a little bit of Ostagar with her and to my absolute amazement I could level enemies in one strike! Whereas with my archer at ostagar even with the right set up it took me as long to kill one enemy as it took the rest of my party to wipe out all the others.

Honestly archery is horribly broken in this game. Never doing that again. Thanks for all the help though. Massively appreciate it.

Yeah, two weapon sets actually sounds like it might be somewhat fun.. turn warrior archer into more of "all-range warrior."

I would probably stick to longbows, keep pumping dex and run dual daggers.  Don't need all the actives or talent investment to have consistent DPS, and could keep buffing defense / attack / damage.  I sort of did this before with a DW but wasn't investing anything in archery (just used it to pull in Kocari mainly).

I'm not arguing that archery is supergreat in DAO, but you are in the absolute worst section of the game for it. You really need stats and equipment to bring out its strengths, and you have neither at Ostagar.

Yeah Aim is slower than molasses.  I don't use it.  Just use a rapid aim bow.  Archery is underpowered in DAO.  I don't like repeater gloves.

I do not understand why everyone picks on archery! The way i understand the game is to just play and have fun with it. I started with a Dalish Rogue Archer and the game is cool playing as that character. I even just use short bows because the character is supposed to be a hunter and it is impossible to hunt with a long bow in a forest and i think the game isn't really balanced in that regard, because my character would not be strong enough to pull a long boy with just 22 strength. I like the fact that in a lot of games long bows are reserved for hunters, and short bows or slings for everyone else. And the fact that archery is not powerful just isn't true. Critical shot or arrow of slaying easily achieve damage scores in the 100s. And, if you do not like the repeater gloves, there is the "cap of the huntsman", or something like that, which is sold by Varathorn in the Dalish Camp that includes rapid aim as a feature and you have the glove spot for something else...

You have to actually use the tactics screen and set your tactics to "Ranged".  Otherwise  when you switch characters she'll act like any other character.
