Please forgive me if this is posted elsewhere.  I've been searching the interwebs, and seen a number of people with similar issues to mine, but the posted solutions haven't worked so far.  I've recently reinstalled BG2 and ToB, one of my favorite games from the good ole days.  I suspected I might have to tweak settings a bit to get it to run in today's Win 10 environment.  The install went fine, opening cinematics went fine, but once it comes to the main menu screen (and the pop-up menu SoA/ToB menu right before it), the buttons are unable to be read, visually glitched, making it a huge burden to figure out which choice does what.

I've tried several things to try to get it to work.  Installing the widescreen mod, which I'll be wanting anyway, with today's displays.  Running in compatibility mode.  Disabling scaling.  Running windowed in a lower resolution.  Nothing seems to be working, as of yet.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is a great game I got a ton of enjoyment out of, and would hate to retire it permanently.  Thanks for your time and consideration.

Have you checked to make sure you have the latest driver for your video card?

There's an option within the game itself (may be difficult to enable with your visual issues - but you might be able to enable via the INI file) to enable 3D acceleration - did you try turning that on, restarting the game and see if the game looks better?

With older games especially, it's important to always install to a new directory that is outside of C:\program files (x386) rather than the default - for example C:\games\BG 2\ is OK - but C:\program files (x386)\black isle\BG II - SoA would lead to problems (though I don't think this has to do with your visual issues).

If nothing seems to be working, the very last thing to try would be to install a virtual machine (such as VirtualBox - which is free) - install an older OS (XP maybe), install BG in the VM, and try the game there.

Yeah, just double checked my video adapter driver and it's the latest one available, it says.  I've had the 3D acceleration box checked in configure since the beginning of these attempts.  Will try turning it off, instead, and will reply if it fixes the issue.  I also uninstalled the program files version and reinstalled into it's own folder on the hard drive, to no avail.  Thanks for your timely responses, but I might still be out of luck.  And I don't think I want to install an older OS just to play one game, although I appreciate the thought.

I have windows 10 and it plays fine.

I do have issues with the EE version though.

I'm going out now, but will look to see what my settings are when I get back.

I have the old school four disc CD-ROM SoA and one disc CD-ROM ToB.  Any settings help would be greatly appreciated Grimwald, thanks!

I installed from GoG which was much easier. I think that I still have the discs somewhere and once I find them will see if I can get it working on my computer from them.

Going to bed shortly so will try in the morning.

I installed on windows 8 no problem before I got this new computer.

A problem that some have is that there are bits of the program left in documents when they try to reinstall. These remains can cause problems. :(

Are you sure the installation itself is clean - a number of other programmes you have on the computer can affect this?  If you want to check that you could reinstall BG while the computer is in safe mode.

True, and in the recent windows installations, bits of the game are left in the documents folder. The game folder in there has to be either renamed or deleted  as does your installation folder before starting a fresh installation.

What must also be noted is that much of the ini file's job is now done with the lua file.

I have reinstalled, in order to change the install path away from /program files.  However, the initial clean install had the same issue.  I have discovered something of note, though.  The installed version on my Windows 10 laptop seems to be running flawlessly.  So I'm beginning to suspect the game's settings for my desktop's visual capabilities may be where my solution lies.  Thanks for all the help thus far, gents!  And while I haven't got it up and running on the comp I want it on yet, at least I'm able to play the game on the lappy, so victory is near!  I may send Boo in to investigate, he'll get to the bottom of the matter shortly.
