If I import my character from 1 to 2, then what gets imported? Just the choices and appearance in the previous game or does the skills also gets imported?

Also, I played as a Human in ME1. For ME2, I want to play as a vanguard. So, will importing be of any use?

Appearence and choices made in the previous game get imported to the next.

ME2 uses a different skill system as ME1, but you get bonus starting experience after your character level in ME1 (more XP, the higher your level was in ME1, thus you start ME2 at a higher level). Also, if you completed some stuff in ME1 (having a certain ammount of credits, bought certain weapon licences) rewards you with bonus starting credits too. A portion of your morality points also carries over to the next game.

Your character class matters not, as you can choose to keep the old or choose a new one at the start of the game. (I don't really understand though what you mean by playing as a human, as you can't be anything else...)

You're always human. That's your race. Vanguard is Shepard's class not race. Classes are: Soldier, Infiltrator, Engineer, Adept, Sentinel and Vanguard.

As for your question, yes, importing gives a lot. Additional dialogue, bonuses at the beginning, bonds you created during ME1. You can change your class even with import save, but if you start ME2 from the scratch, you'll miss a lot.

You can basically change your appearance and class in ME2 (although your gender is etched in stone)

The choices you made and things you did however affect events in ME2 (such as who died on Vrmire and whether Wrex is alive or not)

if you don't play from an imported save Wrex is presumed dead and the dialog with Miranda after the first level determines which of the two possibles died on Vrmire
